Overview

  • Linking from the database studio to Pat Green and Julian’s home using an outside broadcast unit

Connecting the Computer to the Telephone Line

  • Equipment Needed: British Telecom plug, modem, telephone line
  • Steps:
    1. Remove the telephone jack from the telecom socket.
    2. Plug the telephone jack into the modem.
    3. Connect another wire from the modem to where the telephone was plugged in.
    4. Switch on the modem.
  • Process:
    • The computer prompts to log on and directs to call the main Prestel computer.
    • After the computer answers, switch the modem and replace the receiver.
    • Enter a personal password to access the opening screen.

Micronet

  • Definition: Area of Prestel designed for microcomputer users
  • Features:
    • Magazine-type page for daily updates and news
    • Software reviews
    • Letters page for user submissions
    • Programs available for download (some free, some paid)

Uses of the Computer

  • Ownership: Cooperative ownership, mainly used by Pat and Julian
  • Reasons for Purchase: Interest in new technology, learning opportunities for older adults
