Accessing DRI Tables

  • Location: McGraw-Hill Connect via Canvas homepage.
    • Click on McGraw-Hill Connect.
    • Navigate to the eBook under the "Read" section on the left-hand side.
    • Use the table of contents (three lines icon) to scroll to and open "Appendix G" for DRI tables.

Understanding the DRI Tables

Dietary Reference Intakes (DRI)

  • Purpose: Recommended nutrient intakes for individuals.
  • Units: RDA (Recommended Dietary Allowance) or AI (Adequate Intake).
    • Bolded: RDA, meeting needs of 97%-98% of the population.
    • Non-bolded: AI, based on best scientific estimates.
  • Nutrients Displayed: Some in milligrams, others in micrograms.
    • Micrograms are smaller than milligrams.

Structure of Tables

  • Categories: Segmented by life stages and gender.
    • Infants, children, adults.
    • Specific requirements for pregnant or lactating individuals.
  • Example: 21-year-old male's Vitamin C recommendation is 90 mg/day (RDA).

Types of Tables

  • Vitamins: Lists RDAs and AIs for various vitamins.
  • Minerals/Elements: Similar tables available for minerals.
  • Macronutrients: Contains acceptable macronutrient distribution ranges.

Upper Levels (UL)

  • Purpose: Indicates safe upper intake levels to prevent toxicity.
    • Example: Vitamin C UL for a 21-year-old male is 2,000 mg/day.
  • Importance: Helps determine if nutrient intake might be too high.
