hello everyone and uh um for these week incognitive ergonomics U video I wanted to uh discuss and like talk about um this article that was posted you know just a month or so ago um on the communications of the uh ACM um journal and it's about the impact of AI on computer Science Education um so it's a very interesting uh study and um so what happened is this MIT uh Professor um he a computer science Professor so he divided his class in three groups all of these group all these groups were uh given the same instruction so they had to write computer code in uh new language so none of the students uh knew the language so it was a brand new language you know programming language to all of them one group was allowed to complete this task using chat GPT the second group was told you met us Cod Lama um large language model I believe what this so which is apparently is AI tool for um generating code and the third group was allowed just to use a Google search um so to learn learn these new programming language using Google search uh the studies show that the group that used Chad GPT solved the problem the quickest um it took the Cod Lama uh group um um you know more time to uh to solve it and the Google Search Group it took the longest to complete the task ask but when um later on the same three group of Stu three groups of students were um tasked with uh solving a problem from memory it turned out that the Chad GPT group remember nothing and they all failed um and in the Google Search Group every student's passed while in the coded Lama group only half passed I believe that uh the study is um highly relevant for cognitive ergonomics um we have a lot of Technology you know just in education you know take Ai and Char GPT which is regularly available to all of us uh but we know as often times happen with um technological innovation we know very little about how these uh technology affects our cognition um in this example again in the context of Education although the Chad GPT group had the highest performance um on the surface but the retention of the context was the worst among the three groups so this tells you that um while there may be you know apparent benefits associated with this technology just a blind use of AI you know gen AI um it doesn't have you know long lasting effect on U you know education on learning there's a growing uh field in research looking at the uh human factors of AIU um years ago you know even with the birth of human factors it was automation you know automated systems in airplanes um automated systems in in the defense sector and every um you know cycle of um you know new technology human factors is always been interested in understanding the impact that this technology had on human behavior and uh uh now with in the last just couple of years with the uh more widespread adoption of AI it's now the turn for uh the community to look at the impact that um this technology has on you know human behavior AI in particular is promised to make um not only like you know some traditional jobs obsolete but also to completely uh revolutionize education uh I read another studies not too long ago on um the adoption of AI in Academia in you know among you know undergraduate students and what is suggested was that um um higher adoption of uh AI tools like chat GPT um among um students that um you know for whatever reason sort of they procrastinated um you know handing in assignments until the very last minute or um students that um had like high level of of of stress associated with with the you know uh College on the other hand uh there was a lower prevalence of um AIU uh you know in in cohorts that um they were more interested not only in you know getting a good grade but also um learning you know about you know content in you know in school so it's interesting how from you know from a cognitive ergonomics perspective it's interesting how um this issue of geni is shipping up in in today's world um and U how you know as far as education goes how it's going to affect um you know learning in in University um so anyway this is something that you know I read this study and and I thought it'd be interested uh to discuss um with you and uh remember that uh for the um one of two assignments I think I believe is the uh literature review I believe it's the presentation um uh for the literature review anyway where um you selecting an article a peer reviewed article and doing the Lear for review on the topic one of the topics is the use of um AI in um you know and did the relationship between AI cognitive ergonomics so if that's something you're interested in uh you can pick that as a topic we're also running studies in the lab right now in the human systems lab looking at these very topics so again if that's something that you're interested happy to talk to you about it that's it for today have a good rest of your day bye
