Planes and Directions of the Human Body

Anatomical Planes

  • Sagittal Plane: Divides the body into left and right parts.
  • Coronal Plane: Also known as the frontal plane, divides the body into anterior (front) and posterior (back) parts.
  • Transverse Plane: Also known as the horizontal plane, divides the body into superior (upper) and inferior (lower) parts.

Anatomical Directions

  • Superior (Cranial): Towards the head or the upper part of a structure.
  • Inferior: Away from the head, or the lower part of a structure.

Other Directions

  • Directions extending from the midline, such as moving towards the back.
  • Superficial: Toward or on the body surface.
