Experimental Research

Introduction

  • This video will explain the concept of experimental research.
  • The study of experimental research will focus on its causes and characteristics.

What is Experimental Research?

  • There are two types of variables in experimental research:
    • Independent Variables: There can be one or more.
    • Dependent Variables: There can also be one or more.
  • In this, the researcher manipulates the independent variables and observes the effect of this manipulation on the dependent variables.

Example:

  • Sugar Intake and Weight:
    • If sugar intake is high, does weight increase?
    • If sugar intake is decreased, does weight decrease?
    • Here, sugar intake is the independent variable (cause) and weight is the dependent variable (effect).

Cause and Effect Relationship

  • Experimental research studies the relationship between cause and effect.
  • The independent variable is the cause, and the dependent variable is the effect.

Usage of Experimental Research

  • It is commonly used in education, psychology, social sciences, and physical sciences.
  • Experimental research is based on observation, calculation, comparison, and logic.

What If Analysis

  • The focus of experimental research is to determine what effect occurs on a dependent variable if the independent variable is changed.

Example:

  • Advertisement and Sales:
    • If a company advertises its product, do sales increase?
    • How much change occurs in sales?

Characteristics of Experimental Research

  1. Manipulation:

    • The researcher manipulates the independent variable.
    • Without manipulation, it would not be called experimental research.
  2. Full Control on Experiments:

    • The researcher has full control over the experiments.
    • The effects of extraneous variables are controlled or eliminated.
    • Extraneous variables are those that are not part of the research.
  3. Effect Calculation:

    • The effect of the independent variable on the dependent variable is calculated.
    • It is observed what effect occurs on the dependent variable due to manipulation.

Conclusion

  • There are three main characteristics of experimental research: manipulation, full control, and effect calculation.
