Moving a Patient from Seated to Standing Position

Introduction

  • Demonstration by Elise on moving a patient from seated to standing.
  • Chris is assisting in the demonstration.
  • Technique applicable from bed edge, chair, or toilet.

Preparation

  • Gait Aid Positioning:
    • Position the gait aid in front of the patient if needed.
  • Correct Positioning of Patient:
    • Ensure the patient is ready for standing by shuffling forward.
    • Feet should be hip-width apart, toes aligned with knees.
    • Prevent foot from slipping by placing your foot in front of theirs.

Positioning for Assistance

  • Stand on the patient’s side, especially on the weaker side if applicable.
  • Patient Instructions:
    • Lean forward so head is over toes.
    • Push up with hands.

Assisting the Patient

  • Using a Walking Aid:
    • One hand on bed, one on walking frame.
    • Helps with a forward lean.
  • Assistance Technique:
    • Front hand on chest or collar bone.
    • Back hand over hip or issue tuberosity.
  • Stand Up Cue:
    • Lean forward and upward on count (e.g., 1, 2, 3).

Troubleshooting

  • If Assistance Needed:
    • Reassess technique if patient has difficulties.
    • Adjust patient’s position or nose forward.
    • Consider bed height adjustment.
  • Persistent Issues:
    • Sit patient back down if difficulties persist.
    • Seek advice or assistance from another clinician.
    • Consider different equipment or referral to physio/occupational therapy.
