Exploring GORE-TEX and Rain Jacket Flaws
Jul 31, 2024
Advanced Rain Jackets and the GORE-TEX Controversy
Introduction
Discussion about an advanced rain jacket design.
Mention of a major flaw in modern rain gear and how GORE-TEX is a scam.
Background on GORE-TEX
Discovered by Bob Gore in 1969 while working at DuPont.
Developed from polyfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) also used in Teflon.
PFCs are harmful to the environment and human health.
DuPont was sued for covering up the dangers of fluorinated chemicals.
GORE-TEX Material Properties
GORE-TEX is a membrane with microscopic pores: large enough for vapor, small enough to block water.
Marketed as the ultimate breathable waterproof fabric.
GORE-TEX jackets have a high hydrostatic head rating, around 20,000 mm.
The Main Issue with GORE-TEX
GORE-TEX can be waterproof and breathable, but not simultaneously.
Breathability is compromised when the outer fabric layer absorbs water.
Vapor cannot escape if the outer fabric is saturated, causing condensation inside the jacket.
Jackets are treated with DWR (durable water repellent) finishes to prevent water absorption.
DWR is not durable and needs reapplication.
When DWR fails, the jacket
