word hello how are you all today yay you made it here just want to let you know that the mechanical engineering program is very happy to see that you're taking this or or watching this video uh just a reminder my name's anime aaka who's next I'm JJ Khan uh there has been changes I am a through F Alpha now anime who already introduced Q through Z and we have a new one hello I'm Haley Haley Tyson my alphabet is going to be G through P happy to be here well let's get on with this I want to uh first let you know that there is going to be a quiz a test whatever you want to call it at the end of this uh you're going to need to provide us with some that you information that you've actually gone through this you've learned something and you know that there are certain expectations um that are going to be expected of you now that you've changed from preor to Major so let's get on with this uh video okay today's information this is all the stuff that we're going to be going over I'm not reading it to you I'm not crazy like that um again take notes take take screenshots take pictures of slides whatever you got to do as anime said you will be sent a form that you have to complete it has questions it's like a quiz I will be grading it one of the things you need to be on the lookout for is there is an Easter egg in this video and Easter egg is well in this part it's a line of text that actually does not belong on a slide on that form you're going to be asked to say what the Easter egg was this is all based on like video games have Easter eggs you go find it and you take it somewhere and then it gives you secret information for you my gunters who are trying to find an Easter egg you will find that and put it on the form and that's our proof that you actually paid attention to the video so if you get everything right on the form you filled out but you do not get the Easter egg you're GNA have to do it all over again so make sure you're paying attention and that you have that when you get to the form and I'm also going to want to know if you know what movie gunters come from and know it's not sing that's Gunther anyway moving on all right moving on so as you know that the School of Engineering encompasses a lot of different departments but of course the mechanical engineering department is one of the largest undergraduate programs woohoo um and our um acronym our abbreviation is me so it's all about me and that continues to be the case it's all about me uh so just want to let you know that if you have other friends or so on that want to come over here it's a great Department a lot of good exciting things to uh do yeah we have a third adviser come on over yeah exactly come on over all right okay cool so um you know here's some information about your program and it is your program so be sure you're aware of that these are people uh that you're going to want to know about there's a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes to help ensure you know Student Success we all rooting for you we want you to get your degree so let's talk about a few of those people we've got the chairman Dr Ulen Shen um and you know with chairs chairs tend to change so just be aware of that right now it's it's Dr Shen and we love him um but just be aware that sometimes that changes and keep keep in the know about that then we've got our associate chair Dr Peter verev uh he'd be the one you contact if you can't uh get Dr Shen or if something's going on in in that way he's the the next one in line Dr verth then we've got our undergrad program director Dr Tariq Ki um you know being an undergrad there's lots of things that he can help you with he plays a big role in that so know who he is if you don't already um The Faculty that we have at an me they do a ton of research and you could see here all of the the different areas uh that they do research in so just be aware of that you know they are your professors but they're they're also doing research and they're they're working hard to uh you know strengthen our program and strengthen what we know so uh be aware of that then we've got our department administrator Janine PCO she is um the one who's overseeing the whole office so just be aware of that the stuff that she's doing it's like it's like hurting cat at at times because she's got a lot of responsibility and she's she's really good at what she does so be sure you know her name uh because she's the best and we've also got the admin assistant will Jennings if you do not know who will Jennings is he's the one in the office sitting at the front desk he's got so much power that he will yield wield for good for good be aware of that but uh you want to be on his good side because he's got he's got the in so uh if you haven't met will yet be sure you introduce yourself and we'll talk more about will in a minute but we've got our senior academic advisers we know them we love them anime abadaka and JJ KH yes yes and then I am an academic adviser I'm Haley Tyson as we said at the beginning I'm new here uh but I work closely with anime and AJ and and just be aware that the three of us were we're always talking always talking so if you think you can uh get around one of us to go to the other just know we we talk and and they're helping me every step of the way so so be aware of that and then finally we've got our fiscal office uh we've got David Kelly and Cindy Sanchez they're important to know because you know as you get closer to your senior design projects or or what have you at the end of the the program there might be moments where you have to order something um so just be aware they're the ones that will help you with that uh at the end of the day cool and then just some information about our em administrative office um you know it's it's that room off the atrium on the second floor um that's like the floor that you walk in on it is the second floor so just be aware of that um we've got our office hours we've got Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 and we do close at noon to 1 uh for lunch and so if you ever see that door closed that means the office is closed and there's usually will will put a sign up maybe explaining when it'll open again but just be aware if the door's closed that there's a reason because the doors open all the time that that we're open so be aware of that um as far as office supplies we do have office supplies in the office Believe It or Not we've got the tape stapler hole pint All That Jazz um but be aware where it says that red X we are not going to let students copy in print that's your responsibility we have other Resource Centers on campus that will help you out with that whether it's engineering Success Center um or other resource uh places across campus you can ask Will if he knows of any off the top of his head or uh your peers there's going to be options for you to print on campus just not our office so just be aware of that don't expect that uh we want to make that clear um and then as far as access goes so you know I'll have a lot of people knock on my door ask how do I get access to this lab well the first step will always be talk to will and I I talked about will in that other slide but he's our admin assistant he'll be in the front office um he's the one that you'll go to for anything like that so um he'll you know point you in the right direction you'll fill out some paperwork and those off uh you Labs if you want access to them the access should be granted not just during office hours but you know if you need to come on the weekend or in the evening uh there's ways to make that happen but you need to go through will so if you ever ask any of us how do I get access to this lab we're gonna tell you to go talk to will so just be aware of that right you went too far there we go okay and nobody give us crap that that the slides are down the side because we have double screens if we do the thing the way you're supposed to do it won't work on Zoom so that's why you can see the slides down the leth hand side no it's not that we're not technologically savvy it's the fact that Zoom only works certain ways so hush it we're done okay office hours for me Haley and Anime we have the alpha break down there for you again take a picture of it because if anybody with the G is making an appointment with me um I will be canceling it because you need to make it with Haley same thing Haley will cancel ones that are in my alpha or anime's Alpha anime will cancel them if they're students out of ours so make sure you're paying attention and those appointments are only made on Lobo achieve there is no other way to get an appointment except through Lobo achieve that's it don't knock on my door don't send me an email and say hey um I need to talk to you sometime today would be great about this and then give me your phone number and and you know have want me to call you no no if you need to talk to me about something that you can't email it you'll need to go into Lobo achieve and they're the same way no no amount of this is going to convince us yeah Starbucks is really good on my world but no amount of it will bribe me into letting you like just wander into my office or make an appointment not through Lobo achieve so please be using your Lobo achieve there's also a lot of information we have uploaded to Lobo achieve remember Orient your red folder had all that great stuff on it still there and you'll get a lot of other information on there like when you forget who your faculty adviser is that's on your Lobo achieve anyway email is only UNM email do not use any other email if you send something through another email we're we're not going to answer it it has to come from UNM email um that is part of our policies on campus our privacy you have to do it you should be looking at your email two to three times a day you don't want to miss anything important we're sending out information about stuff on campus there might be things about scholarships or internships or other things that you are required to do information the advisement office needs from you um there might be a really good speaker on campus there's a lot of different things it could be so please don't be deleting emails um you're going to be on a list serve which I think is actually on the next slide um just like you were for premor you're going to have another one uh we do have the advise me email which is an email that pretty much is checked by more than just us so that if you have some general questions instead of emailing the individual advisers you could be emailing the advise me email as well again has to be from your UNM email there is a lot of information as a major that you will be getting through list serve and through your UNM email so for the 50th time read your email two to three times a day because telling me Oh yeah I saw your email but I didn't read it will not ingratiate you into my world read your emails I've heard that heard that to my face in an appointment heard that don't good advice good they did leave they did live I did let them live oh good well good because we need the students they were damaged but they lived all right let's move on um some other important excuse me advisement information now that you have transition from a preor to a major status um you have been assigned a faculty advisor yay for you and that information is on that welcome to me email that was sent to you if I I put on the subject line to read and keep but in case you didn't keep it because we know some people don't um that is also recorded on your Lobo achieve history so it's always there for you to access uh some things are going to be changing as I mentioned now that you have an academic adviser and a faculty advisor you've also been added to the me list serve you've transitioned from the pre major list serve to the list serve and why is that you may Wonder well because there might be some opportunities that are only for our students in the major there have been some great opportunities like for summer uh research assistants um that have been recently sent sent out maybe some internships information on graduate school so there are some opportunities that are just for the students that are in the major so please make sure to keep track of your email as JJ mentioned also this is where your information about advisement for the upcoming semester will be set so it is certainly not a good idea to just ignore them please do not do that especially now that you're in the me program all right and in case you forgot about it already the Easter egg was not on that slide okay yeah change an advisement okay advisement is mandatory you got that you're done um you have to be advised every single semester you don't have a choice um I know some of you look at it like well you didn't tell me anything I had to tell you what classes I was taking well yeah because we were getting you ready for having faculty advisement when you work with your faculty adviser they're they're not there to be telling you what NE what classes are next hopefully if you're trying to take a class out of order they're going to mention you don't have the PRX for that class we can hope but that doesn't always happen um but they expect you to turn in a sheet with all of the classes that you want to take the next semester and even the next semester out um so you have to know what you're doing and that's why we've kind of been the Bratz that we have while you've been a pre- major uh unlike as a pre major when we send out your email towards the beginning of the semester and then give you two months until registration to get your hold off you are going to have two weeks two that's it two because your faculty not only teach they do research they have a lot of other stuff going on that they are doing so they reserve a two- week period of the semester to do faculty advisement with you and they are going to be expecting as part of the faculty advisement you're going to have discussions beyond what classes to take this is when you talk to them about do you want to do shared credit which we'll mention later do you want to do Department honors which we'll talk about later um what areas are you interested in is there a certain type of of research that you're looking to go into a certain field hey this might be a good elective for you later in the program if you want to do that type of research that's what they're there for they're connecting with you about that part of our accreditation says you have to be meeting with an engineer each semeer once you're moving in the major and that's what they are they are your instructors they're your faculty but they are Engineers currently working in the field publishing in the field they are your best resource for what is going on in the field and things that you can be a part of in that field so you want to be taking advantage of that now again two weeks they've only set aside two weeks to do this if you miss that two weeks they they don't have to answer you and if this is we're we're coming into spring we're redoing this you will have all of Summer faculty are not on contract for summer they might be on campus somewhere working on their research but they do not have to answer your emails so if you're trying to get advised because you didn't get advised in the two-e period they may not answer you until the next semester starts and then you're not registering until the first week of classes most of your classes are closed and you get a registration fee because you registrated Reg late we can't take off your HS without the signed sheet from your faculty member there is nothing that will get us to take those holds off you have to meet with the faculty adviser now we have a lot of students all the time be like yeah I didn't do my form yet I just didn't have time make time somewhere in that two weeks you need to make time you will get notice from us through the list serve of when the two-e period is and then you will be contacted by your faculty of how they are doing their faculty advisement maybe they're going to hold face Toof face maybe they're doing it through Zoom they're doing the setup through emails because you'll see that none of them have appointment hours on Lobo a chief Dr pile might the rest of them probably not they're not going to have anything on Lobo a chief they'll let you know how they want to set that up with you and obviously that's through your email so again please read emails please pay attention to the one that we send from the list serve that this is your twoe block you miss the two-e block you will not not be registering on time so can't stress that enough and the Easter egg's not on this one either so no it's not obviously not on this slide now making so easy yeah that two week period of time uh can't be emphasized the enough but let's move on Okay cool so talking about a must us student tool um I'm hoping everyone here can recognize what this is is but we're going to go over it uh Lobo tracks degree audits that it's just my favorite thing because it's so it's really fun to use if you've never used it um it it's the best tool uh provided to you to help you figure out what you need to graduate you know because that's the question students are always asking okay well you know what do I need what do I need um and we we work with that uh pre- advisement sheet and that's where a lot of students get get caught they're like what do I take this this is how you know this is what we're looking at when we are trying to find answers about what you need um on the screen here you're going to see uh this is the pdf version of your audit so you're either going to do a pdf version or um the HTML on the HTML one you're going to see the uh graphs and stuff at the top you can just completely ignore the graphs um but we we'll get to that basically basically if you don't know where to find your Lobo TRX degree audit it's going to be in my.unm.edu menu where you register okay and you'll see where it says submit review Lobo tracks degree audits you'll click that and then you'll just follow the steps and that's how you'll you'll find your audit and it's really cool because you know everything's broken into um uh the requirements okay and they're broken down by sections so you'll really get to see okay what do I need what do I have if you have completed a requirement you'll see that green okay and that's we love to see that green okay it means you've got it and you need okay if you haven't completed it you'll see the red no uh and that just tells you okay uh you still need something for this requirement um you'll see the sub requirements there's the the plus sign for complete the minus sign for not complete um if it's not complete you'll see where it says select from and those classes where it says from those are required classes okay we've got a few exceptions sure when it's your um any elective or your math elective sure you can choose for those but the rest of them if you see select from and then the classes that follow it there are there's no flexibility there you're taking those classes if you want the degree they're required so just remember that they're they're required um if you ever find that you're trying to look through your Lobo TRS degree audit and you're confused uh because some of it's intuitive and some of it's just not it takes practice to use so if you find yourself struggling please make an appointment with your adviser we love the Lobo tracks degree audit we want to go over it with you um and make sure you understand because this is this is your tool right if you don't understand how to use this you need to uh take the steps to make sure you know how to use it and we'll we'll help you with that we're not going to make you feel bad um but you need to know how to use this or it's going to be a really rough time for you uh in the major and you just got here so like you want to have fun when you can so uh have fun and use this tool absolutely all right cool and then here you know you see the breakdown of the requirements so we've got at the top the pre-admission um if you're in this uh video watching this then you have already done all that uh which is great this should be all green all completed requirements so that's awesome and then it'll show the UNM requirements we've got that diversity the Gen EDS um a lot of people use the this tool to look at those specifically because it it's it's awesome to see when you've not done something you see that that redex and you're like oh I need that still and then we've got the EM gened um and the major and maybe minor so uh just so it's clear for me miners are not required for some programs you will see oh wow they have to have a minor we do not so if you are not aware of that you do not have to have a minor you can and if you want that you need to contact your adviser to add it to your audit and it'll show up there but if you don't want one you don't have to have one uh and then going even further down you'll see The Unofficial transcripts uh and transfer course evaluation so from there we get just your un M transcript so we can see what you're registered for or the classes you've already taken at un uh and then beneath that you'll see your transfer uh credits so anything that you've uh come over here with from another school you'll it should show up there and if it's not then uh you need to contact Admissions and see if they don't have your transcript or contact us we we'll figure that out but that's where it should be if you if you have it and that's a nice breakdown of how the degree audit is um structured all right let's talk about some more things about the degree audit the degree audit if you don't know is what we use to certifi degrees diplomas that's what the registar needs so the registrar's office uses it students use it academic advisors use it faculty advisors use it so it's a really great tool as Haley mentioned now as soon as you register the course is going to show up in the degree re audit and it's going to show up in an IP status where you would normally see a grade that IP status means in progress in process however you want to look at it but what it's going to do how it's programmed is that if you have something in IP status it's going to give the student the benefit of the doubt that it will be completed so that's wonderful and if you have something that's going to be in process of being completed it's going to have those little uh blue dots that just added that recently so uh those blue dots are really important as well now um let's talk about when students are going to apply for their degree it's very important because you're going to be looking at your Lobo track degree audit this can give you some insight as to when you're going to apply for your degree um you're going to apply for your degree one year prior to graduation um and the way you know when is about a year from graduation is going to be when your upper division hours which is on your Lobo trucks degree audit is uh you have 25 earned upper division hours now it could be 23 24 maybe even 22 we would rather you apply early than late that's for sure um and the application for degrees are actually on the webs site uh for me the me website and those degree um applications are going to be submitted to JJ and I uh so please note of this uh breakdown for those applications for degree uh JJ works with the a through L applications and I will be working with the m through z now if Haley gets one I'm sure she's going to redirect you to the where it needs to go so there's no problem there now um keeping in mind that if an IP status uh is going to give the students the benefit of the doubt that the course and that requirement is going to be completed um when you register for your last semester it should be all green on that leftand side as Haley says that green looks really nice and it's really interesting that students do get excited about it I get excited for them um but also what's going to happen is at the top of your Lobo tracks degree audit it will change to all requirements complete within process coursework so when you register for your last semester if it does not say all requirements complete with inprocess coursework please please contact your academic advisor as soon as possible um as I mentioned the registrar's office uses this to certify degrees your requirements will not be certified for degree completion without that state that statement on the top and it all being green so just to let you know uh we're here to help with that Lobo tracks degree audit as Haley mentioned if you have questions and you want to go through it again to make sure you're reading it correctly please make an appointment it's just the easiest way and we're happy to to talk with you about that all right okay this is mine yes all right how to fix your Lobo tracks and or your cumulative GPA we'll start with the Lobo tracks if you notice something is wrong on your Lobo tracks um which is not unusual don't freak out it happens it it's computer generated it's got programming based so there's something somewhere that's possibly messed up don't worry about it you just need to let your advisor or no so we have we we don't go through everybody's audit every single semester when you do your faculty advisement you're doing things with them that we may look at your audit to double check something on one of those sheets we get we may not that means you are responsible for your audit you're the one that has to note wait a minute I I took math 316 why isn't math 316 showing up on my audit contact your adviser ask them there may be something wrong with how it's coded and we need to get it fixed we submit something to the registar to have that fixed um once we submit it you got to give the team a little time it shouldn't take longer than two weeks and usually it's only a few days but once you need to look at about two weeks after go check is it fixed yes coolies everything's happened it's not fixed reach back out to your adviser and be like um so I asked you about this and I know you said you were sending something but still not fixed so what's up and then we can go check on where it is in process um you don't want to get around to graduation and be like wait it's saying not everything is done oh shoot I forgot to C do a class but then you really figure out oh no the audit just didn't do it correctly um what you should be doing is uh save a copy of your audit as a PDF check it when you go to register save another copy of it so you have final grades check it again make sure what your final grades are I don't know how many of you did not know what your final grades were this last semester and told me no I passed that class I don't understand why I can't take the next class didn't pass that class so be checking that be checking your audit make sure everything is counting where it needs to or contact us so we can make sure that you get it taken care of now on that thing about you know maybe you got a C minus in a class maybe you got a D you got something that is not doing so good for your GPA and you want to improve your GPA students are allowed to do up to 12 credits of grade replacement um typically that's four classes if you're replacing something like calculus which is a four credit class maybe you only get to replace three classes but if you got a D in a class especially one that we said you had to take like chemistry and then you had to retake it because D is not good enough for pre-admission obviously and then you end it up with an a you can do a replacement and that D will not count anymore on your GPA it'll still be on your transcripts you can't get rid of it that you ever got the D but it won't hurt the GPA anymore because it's only counting the most recent grade like I said you can only do that for up to 12 credits if you're not sure if there's a class you should repeat or would it be worthwhile to do a grade replacement I didn't get that big of a jump when I retook it have that conversation with one of us you know make an appointment with your adviser and go over it um there may be options of classes you want to take in an upcoming semester to repeat a class to fix the GPA a little bit that's something we can help you with and talk about so if you are wondering about how to fix your GPA or you want more information about the gr doing the uh grade Replacements let us know we are happy to help with that all right your responsibilities yes um you've had responsibilities in the past but now that you've moved into the major it really is going to be a lot of it we need to refresh your memory okay uh review your degree audit every semester check for inconsistencies a save uh your audit to a folder once you've registered and compared it from the previous semester as JJ mentioned earlier um also just the fact that you know communication is is really important for us uh because we don't know what you don't know until you tell us um no no I'm psychic yeah I'm psychic ask questions please please ask questions it's the best way for us to help you out and don't be shy about your questions there's no terrible question there's only good questions okay um so if you need to make an appointment to talk do not procrastinate on that uh don't just don't know what you need until you ask okay it's sort of a common thing but your responsibilities as you move forward uh with your faculty advisers it's going to be becoming more um it's going to hyen your responsibilities just because they're going to be talking to you your faculty adviser about the engineering field about the research and so on and you want to make sure that you're progressing to complete your degree there's been a few students students that oh first you know darn I I didn't get that class and you know then they have to squish it into their schedule some way or somehow please review your degree audit know how to read it ask questions check your email um all notices are go go out through the email uh we have a list serve that some of our faculty ask us put this on the list serve because I'm trying to recruit a student to to work with me or I have this great opportunity somebody knows about so send it out to the students so please be doing those things it it's just to benefit you we're here to have you progress as an engineer all right let's see here 14 yeah there we go there we go which is which is me yeah gonna get into some indepth information here okay it's gonna be a lot take a picture stretch take a picture take a picture take take a screenshot whatever you gotta do um planning for upcoming semesters there's actually going to be a couple slides about planning for upcoming semesters because things you need to know and things you need to remember and we know you all talk okay you do you are newly moved to the major don't talk to the people who are already in the major they have a different catalog than you things are different for them this however is not different there are two tracks for everyone I don't care if they've been in the program for three years or they just are a freshman now and they're not even they're still pre- major or you coming into it two tracks it's all we got fsae and Senior design no matter what anybody tells you two tracks yes there are three teams on campus but there are only two tracks for mechanical engineering fsae is one of those tracks that is working on the scale formula race car the one that's sitting in the atrium is a combustion engine they're now doing electric be prepared I've had a couple students like no I want to do yeah they're doing Electric they get a big enough team they might do both but for now electric if you do fsae you have specific courses that are part of it that's why it's its own track they do not take senior design in place of senior design and in place of some of the me electives they have three classes specific to the track 406 L which is spring only can only be taken in Spring and it's a four credit class 407 can only be Tak in fall and 408 is also a spring only again there is no senior design your Capstone course is your 408 that is your final build before going off to competition so they do not have to do design five they do have to do design four no design five because they have 406 407 and 408 and again those classes are specific semesters you can't and you can't go stack them either people might tell you you can you can't all right you need to be taking them in order starting in the spring if you're not sure if it's the spring you should be starting that is a question you can ask your adviser you can talk with your faculty adviser or you can talk to Dr Russell who oversees the fsae track the other track is senior design senior design has three options doesn't matter which of the three options you do you are taking design five which is em 460 all three options are required to do it no no option other than that um the teams that are part of senior design are solar Splash and lobal launch and then we have the traditional portion of that track which is the project option the individual or group project option okay so you have the two teams solar Splash and lobal launch if you want to do solar Splash or lobal launch you will have a topics course in the fall that topics course only runs in the fall and obviously for solar Splash is solar Splash m461 solar Splash or m461 rocket engineering you'll have that topics class fall in Spring you will have your team design five or if you're not doing a team you'll do the group project design5 which is me 460 if your Lal launch you take 460 with Doc agular if your solar Splash you take 460 with Dr verth if your group project you'll take it with whichever faculty is teaching it usually it's Dr Hanan sometimes it's Dr pile but there will only be three sections of it in the spring because of the teams um and then in the fall depends on how many people we have doing it there might only be one or two sections for the group project group project can take me 460 fall or spring doesn't matter they're not part of a team they don't have to follow a specific sequence but if you are doing the team your 460 will be in Spring technically before graduation is how it looks at if you are not sure about the teams or about the things that they're doing please talk with your faculty adviser get some more information there's a little information that we have but you can also talk to Dr verif about solar Splash doc agular about lobal launch and again if you want the other track FS you would talk to Dr Russell but make sure you are paying attention to the fact that two tracks doesn't matter if you're solar Splash or Lobo launch you are still senior design and you will take design five yes we're harping on it because you all tell each other you don't have to take it and you do I know we we hear all the rumors come around so my friend told me we want to squish that rumor right away let's move on and I'm going to give you one more opportunity to take a picture of this slide because it's that important two there you go all right I post and everything planning for upcoming semesters is continuing because there's a lot of planning that's involved right the first thing I want to say is uh that there are things definitely you need to remember things that we want to just put in your mind so that you'll remember them later on one um our classes uh that you need only offer During certain semesters hm that was just on that FSA thing right and uh somewhat of so of senior design so keep that in mind um is it required that some courses are taken in sequence in other words are there prerequisites that's what your Lobo track degree audit is good for as well so are there prerequisites are there co-requisites um so definitely important another thing that we want to just mention to you that um how many many hours you can realistically take I know some students want to take 18 want to take 20 they want to you know finish this degree as fast as they can um and just let me remind you that if you're having to repeat courses you're not progressing as fast as you can so I understand that there are some restrictions or criteria for scholarships but just be kind to yourself and make make sure you're just realistic with what you can successfully complete um and I'll leave that there uh who should you ask if you have questions or if you need help your instructors your faculty advisers the three of us here on this video you could also just walk right into the office and ask wheel or ask whoever is at the front desk um so just let you know that communication is the key here and I need to point out that this dog is not not the Easter egg Easter egg that you're looking for so it is not I'm letting you know and I'm going to stress something about courses taken in sequence the sequence don't always make sense pay attention to prerequisites in the catalog because 318 is a prct to 317 yeah doesn't make sense but that is the sequence 318 then 317 pay attention absolutely that might have been a question on the thing you have to fill out too anyway Let's uh just move on move on another one for me look at how I I get all the text look at this okay and I'm gonna I'm gonna preface this because earlier animated did the slide about applying for graduation when you have the 25 earned upper division 23 22 whatever and how that application comes to her or comes to me a through l m through z um shared credit which is on this slide also has that for those of you that are wondering like well why doesn't Haley get any we're senior academic advisors Haley is an academic adviser certain things are associated with the fact that we're senior academic advisors so that is why we have to oversee certain paperwork okay just want you to know that there's purpose we didn't just do this for the fun of it that's why I want you to pay attention anyway departmental honors um this one if you decide you want to do departmental honors there is an application process that's part of it that the faculty you're working with should be telling you about um and that information goes to your academic adviser so to Haley or to me or to anime depending on where you are in that Alpha you have to have a cumulative GPA of a 3.5 or higher and you have to have that GPA GPA or higher when you graduate so you have to hold on to that GPA and keep it above a 3.5 even if you take the classes do the honors thesis and everything if your GPA is a 3.4 when you graduate you cannot be awarded departmental honors because you did not graduate with a 3.5 GPA okay warning um for departmental honors you take two classes one is a problems course undergraduate problems you can see the number there uh with a faculty you talk to the faculty ahead of time before you Reg register for their section make sure they are on board for working with you with the research that you want to do once you are in that class you're starting to look at the things that you're going to be doing for an undergrad thesis for departmental honors you have an application for that that you turn in that the faculty signs off on and the undergrad curriculum director which we brought him up earlier Haley mentioned him he has to approve it and then once all that's approved it's sent off to your adviser after that semester you end up in EM 463 no matter which semester you take it it's 463 um that is your undergrad honors thesis again with the same teacher you took the problems course and that's when you actually do your honors thesis whatever project that is paper that is whatever you've outlined with that instructor with that faculty and then at the end of it you have to turn in that information which again Dr Kishi who's our undergrad um director would have to sign off on it that it's acceptable and that then is sent to your adviser so we know that yes you have completed departmental honors and then we'll be able to put that in when we certify your degree okay so there's paperwork at the start of it and at the end of it and you have to make sure all of it is done again you have to have that 3.5 or higher there are three different types of honors on campus there are honors and the Honors College where you can take a couple of classes and get their honors designation or do their minor or do their second major yes they have a second major if you get a GPA 3.5 or higher you get University honors which is cuml Summa cuml Magna cuml depending on how high the GPA is um that's University honors you have to have that to be able to have departmental honors they impact each other but they are two different things okay uh if you have questions about departmental honor or you want to talk to anybody about it you can talk a little bit about it with us but you should be talking to your faculty adviser about it and another reason to go on the website and see what research our faculty do because someone might be doing the research that you're really interested in and you want to do departmental honors with them and you can find all that info on our website shared credit is the other program majors are able to do you would be doing shared credit your last semester not last semester last year last two semesters in the program you apply for it the same time you apply uh to graduate a year out from graduation you should have about 75 earned hours when you do it you have to have a program GPA of a 3.0 or higher um there are two tiers 3.0 to 3.4 has certain things required for the application 3.5 and higher have different things for their application all of that information is on our website both of these honors and shared credit go to the Emy website click students click undergrad scroll to the bottom you will see departmental honors and shared credit um you will need to talk with your faculty adviser I mean you want to talk to them about grad school you want to know what's going to be involved are you going into a field that really needs grad school yes you are probably most likely and then do you qualify to be able to do this and what kind of classes would you want to do this program lets you take up to 12 credits of graduate coursework as an undergrad and then apply that to your graduate degree now this is another thing like applying for graduation this application comes to me in anime because anime and I also advise for The Graduate students so that is why we are overseeing shared credit because we're the ones that are going to be able to look at your plans and make sure yeah you got all the classes in there that you needed to and you're following what you need to do for grad school because we also have advice for that okay so go look that up if you have questions about it please feel free to ask us about it um and we can go over you know what students do for that and how it works but it is a good way to start on your graduation on your graduate program and then after you graduate with your bachelor's degree you apply and move into the graduate degree and then you can get a graduate degree in like a year like one year and that is a happy joy joy and if you're one of those students that's interning with Sandia Labs talk to us about shared credit because they're going to want you to get a graduate degree right anime we're just going to cut it now yeah if you're Sandia if you're Sandia intern you'll be doing shared credit absolutely yeah also uh for the shared credit you're not required to have a GRE where if you're not shared credit you are expected to have a GRE you will also have your application uh fee reimbursed to you so there are some definite benefits to there to that and JJ usually says this even if you're not sure if you're going to be going to graduate school what the heck get into the shared credit program and uh it may also look good for you on your transcript that you've taken graduate credit uh courses even if you don't want to do graduate with us do it because another school won't take it because it went towards your undergrad degree but if they see that you could do 500 level classes and you're getting A's and B's already in a 500 level that looks really good on their graduate application right exactly there are two things I just want to point out on this slide one this information there are reminders on your advisement form about me departmental honors so that's a discussion you could have with your faculty adviser as JJ mentioned also if you're going to be applying for shared credit so it's always there it's going to be there every semester so please look at that also use the me website it is full of some good information a lot of people we've realized don't use it but please use that okay let's and if you Google for these forms you get the old forms so don't go to the EM website yes absolutely all right let's go on some of the things that you were asked to do on your welcome to Emmy email was to sign up for handshake through career services this is actually a slide that they created and that's why it looks a little different uh the the slide itself there's something else that's important here uh but I want to talk about Career Services Career Services is a really uh it's a Hidden Gem on campus um they have walk-in hours they have appointment hours they have workshops uh they can help you with resumés they can help you in looking for a job even though you're in school now uh they will even do uh some little mock interviews type of thing um but it's really a good good resource also even if you after you graduate as a graduate as an alumni ofm you can go back and use Career Services after the fact I know somebody who graduated 10 years prior and came back and used Career Services they helped them readdress their resume and and their cover letter and so it was really helpful for them uh there's something really particularly important here that you may want to point uh no notice but I want to emphasize to you that the career services is a Hidden Gem it is on the other side of Campus it's in the um Mesa Vista Hall area over there by the onetop um but again um very useful tool office uh but there's something that you should be noticing here all right let's move on to the next thing okay what to expect from this point on okay so uh in the email that you got letting you know to come watch this video there is also a link for a review sheet an emergency contact info yes that link will work on your phone you can fill that form out on your phone but that's a lot of thumb work I don't know if you want to do that you might want to be doing it on your tablet or your laptop but it will work on your phone uh you have an em orientation hold as well as you will be getting um a hold for advis they're two different things the me orientation hold will be released after your form is approved we call it your Meo form your me orientation form so when your Meo form is approved um and you have listed the Easter egg and got it correct and I will allow one wrong answer I am actually grading it I guess I can't get away from my you know previous teaching years you're allowed one wrong answer as long as you got the Easter egg if you did not get the Easter egg and you get everything right again it's going back we already mentioned that um and like we said the Easter egg is a line of text that's just random and and doesn't belong where it was of course we've passed it already so if you haven't found it yet go back through the whole video you're done um after this point each semester couple weeks after midterm you'll get an email through the list serve letting you know uh when the faculty advisement is going over what the procedure is um and what you need to be aware of at that point you need to be reviewing your lobal tracks degree audit faculty may require you to bring a pdf version with you to um meeting with them or email it to them with the form that you have to do all that kind of fun stuff but you will be getting follow-ups on that um do your em I hope you did this as soon as you got the email I can't tell you in here to do this as soon as you got the email because you already got the email that's how you got the link that you got here so I hope you did it early don't wait to do the sheet do the sheet right away maybe you did the sheet while you were doing this awesome because that's the best way to get it done but hold will not come off without this being done the other fun thing if you do not turn in the sheet or if you turn it in and I send it back and say you have to redo it and you never turn it in again you will be moved back to preor status and you can pass this along to your friends who haven't watched this yet because you know you have a few of them if they don't do this we move you back to premor preor means you can't take 300 level classes you'll need special approval from faculty to do that and some faculty won't do it so if you want to make sure you can take the major courses 300 400 when you're supposed to you need to make sure that you got this done you got your form in and you got everything situated and ready and your Meo hold removed so make sure you take care of it and tell your friends who are also in this world to World of preor to Major get it done so your hold will come off because otherwise you move back to preor and you'll have issues around registration time absolutely y okay and there is a deadline to finish this whole process um in your email yeah it's in that email that you were sent on how to get to this link um so definitely make sure you get it done read please read okay all right here's the Emy website if you don't know already remember it me is it's all about me in this department so it's me. unm.edu no it's not it's anime it's all about you that's right uh but that website has a lot of good information and if you have some uh friends or siblings that are looking to see if Emmy is good for them that's another good reason to look at the website if you're interested in graduate school there's information on the graduate program uh if you have questions please email your academic advisor um and remember you have a two-e period of time for advisement coming up and you will be getting a notification from your uh faculty adviser take advantage of that because it is not going to be easy if you miss that uh web that window of opportunity all right yeah you are doing faculty advisement this semester right this one you will have faculty advis so thank don't ask me who your faculty is I'm not telling you Thank you for attending let's say bye guys bye
