Google Docs Formatting Tips

Adding Fonts

  • Access the fonts menu to add more than default fonts.
  • Search or sort fonts by popularity, date added, or trending.
  • Click on a font to add it to your fonts menu for future use.
  • To remove fonts, click the X next to the font in 'My Fonts' panel and confirm.

Clearing Formatting

  • Copy-pasting from web can bring unwanted styles/unusual spacing.
  • Highlight text and select Clear Formatting to match document style.
  • If missing the button, find it in the Format menu.
  • Use Ctrl + Shift + V to paste without formatting to save time.

Formatting Text

  • Capitalization is not formatting; use Format > Text > Upper/Lower case.
  • Double-click a word to select it; triple-click to select the whole paragraph.
  • Use Format > Text > Superscript/Subscript or shortcuts:
    • Superscript: Ctrl + Period
    • Subscript: Ctrl + Comma

Paint Formatting

  • Copy formatting using the Paint Format tool.
  • Select text with the desired formatting, click the paint roller icon, then apply to another text area.
  • For multiple selections, double-click the paint roller to enter multi-select mode and apply formatting.

  • Default styles available for titles, subtitles, and headings.
  • Highlight text to change styles via the text Styles menu.
  • Apply changes to all items of the same style at once.
  • Update a style by modifying one instance and selecting Update [style] to match.
  • To save styles as default for other documents, go to Text Styles > Options > Save as my default styles.

Document Outline

  • Headings added to the outline view for quick navigation.
  • Access via View > Show Document Outline.
  • Click the icon to expand the outline view.

Creating Clickable Links

  • Copy the URL from the desired website.
  • Select text in Google Docs and use the chain link icon in the toolbar to create a clickable link.
