Foreigners' Views on Malaysia's Culture

How does Malaysia compare to maybe your expectations versus how it is now that you're actually here? I expected it less. I have a small problem in Malaysia.

I think we like most of the spots we visited. I thought it's gonna be the same as Thailand. Let's say good thing first.

Good day folks. Today we're gonna find out exactly what foreigners really think about Malaysia. Let's hit the streets. Hey how are you doing? Good.

Where are you from? From Germany. Germany, okay.

Yes. And how long have you been here so far? Two days.

Two days? Only two days, yes. And so how does Malaysia compare to maybe your expectations versus how it is now that you're actually here?

I expected it less crowded. I thought it's like in Bangkok maybe so that you have more cute cafes and something like that. And also like in Chinatown.

I thought it would be like Chinatown in Bangkok, so it wasn't like that. Is that where you're staying in Chinatown? No, we stay next to the KL Tower. So maybe you actually had higher impressions than when you arrived now?

Yes. And how long are you going to stay for? We fly tomorrow home. Tomorrow? Okay, alright.

It was quite nice, but I expected a difference. What about the food? Did you like the food here?

Yes, I really liked the food. But you prefer Bangkok? Yeah, I'm a Bangkok girl.

I mean Bangkok is amazing to be fair. Okay, thank you so much. Thank you so much. Thank you. Bye.

Hi, how are you? Thank you. Good?

Perfect. Yeah. Where are you from? I'm from Iran. From Iran.

Yeah. And are you living in Malaysia now? Yes, I'm living here.

When did you move here? 2011. Okay. I moved here, but not completely.

Just I had a second home in 2011 until now. Okay. So today's topic is really asking foreigners like how you really feel about Malaysia and maybe compared to what you thought about Malaysia before coming and how it feels now that you're actually here, living here. So yeah, how do you feel about Malaysia?

I really like Malaysia because they have very nice people. They live here, very nice people, many different customs and religions. And very important, respect to each other.

And I think it's very important because I lived in Iran and I didn't see this. Really? Yes, just Muslims.

Just respect to Muslims. But here, Muslims and all religions live together very peacefully and comfortably. Thank you. The weather is very nice.

I like it, but sometimes... Hot, raining sometimes. And it has a very fancy condo, apartment.

Affordable condos. Yeah, exactly. And I completely like Malaysia.

That's good. But I have a small problem in Malaysia. I think this government is a little racist and just take care of Malaysian people. And everything. It's a little very high expensive for foreigners.

Yeah, for foreigners. It's very honest. Most people wouldn't just come out and say that. I appreciate the honesty. Thank you.

That's good. Have you had trouble to get a permanent visa or residency here, or it was pretty easy for you? I have a second home.

Second home is kind of I put money as a deposit in the bank, and government give me 10 years. a visa without anything just I have a visa so money will get you what you need here okay thank you so much you're welcome hey bro where are you from uh I'm from China but I live but I started in Singapore okay you live in Singapore now yeah I live in Singapore now is this your first time visiting Malaysia yeah yeah yeah first time and what do you think of Malaysia maybe compared to what you thought about it before coming as well the city I live in Singapore China is very close to Shanghai. So I think, I think, I think Malaysia is kind of like Shanghai.

It's very developed. But as you can see, the street is a little bit crowded. This area, this area for sure.

Did you stay around here in Bukit Bintang? My hotel is around here. Around here. Maybe Shanghai is more comfortable for me.

That's my personal perspective. Did you enjoy staying here? Did you enjoy your time here? Maybe the food? and how was like your hotel and stuff?

Yeah, for sure. Yeah, good. Yeah, I think the food here is very like the Chinese food, so yeah, I think this is delicious.

That's good. And last question then. How do you feel about Malaysia compared to Singapore? Singapore may be more developed, but the law in Singapore is very strict. I can even smoke on the street.

Really? Yeah. I can even buy a cigarette in Singapore because I'm not 21 years old.

Right. 21, wow. 21, yeah. So I think Malaysia is more free, I think.

Wow, okay. Okay, awesome. Thank you so much, man. Hey, how are you doing?

Good? We are good, yeah. Where are you from?

I'm from Kerala. From India, actually. India?

Yeah, India. Is this your first time here in Malaysia? Must be.

Okay. So today's topic is asking foreigners how they really feel about Malaysia. And so maybe compare it to your expectations.

Did it live up to expectations? And how do you feel about the country now that you're here? Yeah, sure.

Like, Malaysia is like a very safe country. Like, most of the spots we visited. Like, it has a different kind of terrain. Today we visited Genting. Actually, it was a highland area.

It's a mountain. Genting Highlands. Genting. Like, it's a mountain place. Like, and this place is like a...

city kind of vibe so and if you go to uh lengkawi we get a beach vibe so it uh there's a whole most of most of the terrains is like within malaysia so we can enjoy all the wipes that's good so you've been like traveling around malaysia a bit yeah for the past three days days. And how do you feel so far about the food here? Food we tried this curry me actually this kind of noodles it's very good and yeah like we tried sticky mango sticky rice yeah we really enjoyed it.

Have you tried nasi kandar? Nasi kandar we need to. It's like it's like Indian Muslim food like they have many different you know dishes out like 20-30 dishes different curries fried chicken With rice and they mix all the curry together the different sauce.

It's very good. I recommend to try it And last question, so how is the food compared to India actually in India? It's too much spicy I said it's a kind of spicy means it's spicy kind of food, but it's not that much spicy Yeah, so here we enjoyed the different days yeah we enjoyed it that's very good would you ever live in malaysia okay thank you so much enjoy the rest of your trip thank you thank you hey brother where are you from from so Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia? Yeah. So you're a tourist here? Yeah, I'm a tourist for 11 days.

11 days? Yeah. First time?

First time. It's not my first time in Asia. I've been to Thailand. Oh, okay.

Yeah. I thought it was going to be the same as Thailand, but it was really disappointing for me. Yeah? Malaysia is disappointing. Yeah.

It's not a good place for me. I don't know why. Try to think.

What was the... Because I have a solar. And you know, all the pavements were not that good for having a solar. stroller in Malaysia I have to hold the baby and take the stroller it's difficult for like going on foot maybe by taxi is good so walking around with the baby is not good it's not good yeah for families I think it's not good for singles if you want to come to Malaysia maybe it's good hmm so you find it better in Thailand for that far much better in Bangkok no I've been to Phuket Phuket okay it's a really nice island enjoy the nature there you have to go there.

That's fair. I think also for example Bangkok would be really bad and difficult with with the baby. I haven't been there.

I'm not gonna judge. Will you go anywhere else in Malaysia or just staying in Kuala Lumpur only? I've been thinking to go to Lingkawi for maybe two days.

Yeah. But I have to talk with my wife first. I think it's a good move somewhere like that compared to here. We'll be more like that Phuket vibe and better I think for walking with the baby. For me I wanna like chill out.

I wanna I'm searching for the nature. I don't want to be like in towers and buildings and a lot of people I've been to Langkawi. I do think it would be better for this situation for sure man. Yeah I'm thinking to go to Langkawi for two days.

Yeah, I'll go by plane and the ticket is not that expensive. It's like 400 Very fast pretty affordable too It's like one hour by plane. Is that your only real negative here or anything else about your thoughts Maybe versus what you thought about the country before coming? I think new for me and I was surprising. When I get tired and when I have a seat like even in the pavement, the security and the police officer is always saying to me, get up.

I don't know why. What about the food here? Did you enjoy the food here?

Yeah, but not the Malaysian food. The American one and yeah, the international one I would say like Italian, American. I don't like even the Arabic food even though I'm from Arabic, yeah.

Oh wow. That's unique. Yeah. Most of the Arabic come here and they just eat Arabic food. Yeah, if you go to the Arab street you're gonna find a lot of people like that.

Arabic people are enjoying having the Arabic food but for me I'm from Saudi Arabia I'm searching for like new experience. Western food, western food. Yeah, western food I would say, yeah.

So was the western food at least good? It's good, it's good, yeah. Yesterday I went to a Japanese restaurant, it was really nice, one of the best restaurants I've ever visited in my life, yeah. But it's not close to KCC, it's like in different place, you have to go by car, it's gonna take maybe 14 minutes. What about the hotel or the rental, the condo rental?

Was that any good for you? You know, the accommodation here in Melisha is good and it's not that expensive. I mean, if you want to enjoy Kuala Lumpur, you have to search for a place close to the pavilion mall. Yeah, nearby. Yeah, nearby, because you don't have to book a taxi and it's going to be good for people who don't want to take a taxi.

Maybe that's a good place. to walk around with the baby is in the mall. No, really, I'm thinking how to go to my hotel, really.

I get tired holding the stroller, holding the baby. I went to the barber shop to have a haircut, and there was stairs, no even lift or like... it was difficult. Are you giving the wife a break right now is that what it is? Yeah she's going like for shopping I know I'm with the baby.

Thanks so much man I appreciate it. Take care. Hey how are you? I'm good. Where are you from?

Pakistan. Pakistan okay and it's your first time in Malaysia? Yes it's my first time we both are together she's my wife. And did you visit anywhere except Kuala Lumpur or you just stayed in the city? If you're talking about the city so it's only right Kuala Lumpur but we are planning to go next weekend like Cameron Highlands.

Cameron Highlands? Okay okay cool. But the thing is that people saying next week it's first of all it's too far, secondly there's a heavy chance of rain.

So we are thinking now we're thinking we're going or not. It's a risk. Exactly. Okay well today's topic I'm asking foreigners here you know how do you feel about Malaysia? How do you really feel maybe compared to your expectations before coming and then now being here in the country?

How are you liking Kuala Lumpur? How do you feel about it? Let's say good thing first.

First of all, people are very good. They are very super cooperative. I mean, if they say...

Yes, if you talk to anyone, they give you honest review, honest feedback, honest answer. And also, the food is very tasty. Food, yeah.

They have variety of food and they are very tasty. I mean, the Pakistani, we love spice. And they have totally spice things. So, that's amazing.

So, if you talk about the bad... Be honest. Might. That's because of traffic. That's it.

Traffic? Yeah, traffic, grab and all those things. Like right now, waiting 18 minutes for your grab, right? Exactly. It's like one more thing we were we are also thinking to rent a bike and a motorcycle But that's a big problem.

Some people are saying no don't do to take it. I mean they blame You need residents you have like some kind of international license or no you just have like a license back home I have my IDP international diving permit, but I didn't try it. It's a risky obviously. Yeah, I think it's a risk as well I considered it and it would be much easier to get around the city but like at the end of the day, I'm not sure if I would be able to get around the city At the end of the day, they can and probably will stop you if they think maybe you're a tourist, maybe you rented the bike, and they can... you know stop you and try and see do you have the proper license exactly that's the problem yeah we have couple of friends that told me better to take a grab not to risk yourself your picnic your enjoyment that's why and would you come back do you plan on visiting again uh see to be very honest right now i'm here for visiting purpose and we have couple of two three meetings as well for working purpose uh okay so hopefully i will come again before coming i will uh research something like weather predictions and these type of things so i will prepare myself afro like coming next time and last question how do you compare malaysia to pakistan like do you prefer life in pakistan you think than if you were to ever move here would you ever consider moving here we would love to because yes because some of the people here like we assume ourselves like it's our home country because there's so many pakistanis here so many indians here so it is like feeling like a home yes it is yeah you feel comfortable here comfortable because we are we can find easily pakistani here so that's a really okay for us.

That's good. Thank you so much. Anything else you want to say?
