ZIP System Installation Manual

Jun 11, 2025

Summary

  • This document serves as the installation manual for ZIP System® sheathing and tape, providing detailed guidance on safe, code-compliant installation for both walls and roofs.
  • It outlines safety protocols, product limitations, handling and storage, panel and tape specifications, recommended fasteners, compatibility guidance, and step-by-step installation practices.
  • The manual also covers repair instructions for common field issues, and specific details for integrating ZIP System® products with multiple cladding and roof types.
  • Emphasis is placed on quality installation for warranty coverage, safety compliance, and coordination with manufacturers’ and local building code requirements.

Action Items

  • None identified in this document. (This is a static installation manual, not a record of a meeting or collaborative session.)

Safety Guidelines and General Use Instructions

  • Follow all OSHA regulations and use appropriate fall protection during installation.
  • Install panels and tape only on clean, dry surfaces; do not work during rain, snow, or frost.
  • Wear appropriate footwear and keep surfaces free from hazards.
  • Install toe boards temporarily on roofs and tape any holes created by their removal.
  • You are responsible for meeting all safety and code requirements; consult with Huber Engineered Woods LLC or relevant authorities as needed.

Product Overview, Notes & Limitations

  • ZIP System® panels are OSB with a built-in barrier, eliminating building wrap or felt underlayment.
  • Panels must be covered with cladding or roofing within 180 days or additional WRB/underlayment is required.
  • Not suitable for manufactured housing under HUD code; warranty applies under IRC and IBC.
  • Do not use ZIP System® tape/sealants below specified temperatures (0°F) or for permanent sealing around round roof penetrations.
  • Additional WRB layers are required for stucco and adhered stone applications.
  • Do not apply fluid-applied WRB or coatings over panels except as specified.

Storage, Handling, and Product Specifications

  • Store panels off the ground, covered but ventilated; release banding in high moisture environments to prevent edge damage.
  • Use only mechanically attached exterior foam insulation; adhesives are not permitted.
  • Panels available in multiple thicknesses and lengths; check supply chain for non-standard sizes.
  • Tape comes in various sizes; follow manufacturing guidance for selection.

Installation – Wall Sheathing

  • Panels can be oriented vertically or horizontally; maintain 1/8" spacing at all edges.
  • Fasten with code-approved fasteners, 6" o.c. on edges, 12" o.c. on intermediates.
  • Overdriven or missed fasteners must be sealed with ZIP System™ tape or liquid flash.
  • Tape all seams with minimum 3-3/4" wide tape; roll thoroughly for adhesion.
  • Use ZIP System® liquid flash for additional protection, especially around fasteners.
  • Follow specific recommendations for flashing and integrating with cladding (brick, siding, stucco, EIFS, stone).

Installation – Roof Sheathing

  • Panels face overlay side out and should span at least three framing members.
  • Maintain panel spacing (1/8"); fasten per code and stagger seams appropriately.
  • For roof pitches ≥4:12, ZIP System® replaces underlayment; 2:12–4:12 requires additional underlayment.
  • Tape all seams after fastening; roll tape for best air and water seal.
  • Ice barriers must be installed as required by code—ZIP System® tape does not replace self-adhered ice barriers.

Flashing and Cladding Integration

  • Use ZIP System™ flashing tape or liquid flash for all seams and transitions.
  • Specific details are provided for flashing around foundations, pipes, windows, doors, and cladding transitions.
  • Always follow cladding and roofing manufacturer instructions for integration and fastener requirements.

Common Field Repairs and Fixes

  • Small holes: Cover with 1–2 layers of flashing tape, overlapping 1" beyond all sides.
  • Large holes: Remove panel from stud to stud, install new panel and tape seams.
  • Saw kerfs, chips, underdriven/overdriven fasteners: Cover with tape; roll for adhesion.
  • Siding removal: Replace WRB, tape edges.
  • Crane holes: Add blocking, patch sheathing, tape all seams.
  • Dirty panels: Clean with water and towel, ensure dry before applying tape.

Decisions

  • Panels and tape must be installed only in dry, clean conditions — Ensures adhesion and maintains warranty.
  • Additional WRB/underlayment required if panels are exposed for more than 180 days — Preserves product performance and warranty.
  • Fastener and tape treatments required for overdriven/missed fasteners — Prevents moisture intrusion and upholds warranty.
