foreign [Applause] welcome back to my channel all right so let's get started with act one's discussion scene one is from page 42 to 46 and this is the exposition um the place is the forest Elias is climbing off of a scaffold you have the house on stage the atmosphere is Misty they're blowing smoke from the side of the stage it opens with iliasis monologue to show you his real character he is a very lazy man he doesn't believe in hard work that is evident from his sentence that I quoted here a man in life which means he would rather spare himself and let others do the Dirty Work the hard work and this first scene is all about the situation or the the scenario around surrounding the Lucas their son their three old son going missing Barta comes to Elias with coffee asking Elias if he hasn't maybe seen Lucas Willem the other son comes to Ilia saying that Ma has looked everywhere she cannot find Lucas have you are you sure you haven't seen Lucas keeps saying he hasn't um Elia says to tell Willamette to go and look he says go to the neighbors go look there go look there what it tells you here is that Elias is not concerned and he has also not tried to go and look for Lookers himself he keeps on ordering people to look for him Elias also becomes very impatient he wants to know why he has to tell them to look everywhere they should know where to look Barta then comes through the Mist now this is important it's not something that happens not something that is said it's a stage direction that is very important that it says is a shape or a ghost so I asked my children what what do you think if you were the director and you saw that what would you do to your character to make that look like a ghost and they said she must be pale she must be Gliding Over the stage you know walking without moving her arms um her head must be down it could be that she has a facial expression of shock or disbelief or fear so she comes through the mistelling the audience that something bad has happened or something is about to happen um has still not gotten up to look for Luca Spartan Willem has been searching everywhere then thank Marley arrives on the scene and she is a special character she has a function she brings the tension for the audience she makes the situation um sound worse she says that this has happened to her aunts um Aunt of hers A boy went missing that only realized that late afternoon and a week later they found the body of this boy frozen to death when I say Frozen I don't mean like frozen I say to my children died from exposure and they actually didn't know what that meant but basically means he dies off cold and then be on that story Barta reacts and her physical reactions to take her first and to put it in her mouth and to bite down that shows you that she believes that this is possible and that she is afraid that that had happened is still not um convinced that the boy is actually missing um so he tells them to go and look again still he hasn't gotten up to go and look for the boy himself now this gives you a lot of insight into Elias's character he doesn't care he's too lazy um he believes it's not his job to look after Lucas it is barta's job and we also see that in the next section where Elias actually blames Barta he says which means he cannot believe that he that she let the boy out of her sight um Elias blaming bartana obviously gets Barta to to um defend herself and she says but she was struggling with the fire um Elias then also later on says that maybe the child is not hearing them because of the Mist so I told my kids you know like Mist when you have your lights on when you're driving through Mist it's difficult for the light to pierce the Mist you cannot see light very far in Mist the same thing happens to voices and sounds Miss basically dampers all um it stops sound from traveling so that's why it's very difficult to miss these circumstances to find someone in the forest arrives on the scene she is the opposite of dantmali both old ladies but then Mali brings you the Panic Tanki brings you the reality so she's more of a a sober mind um she says we need to go and fetch the men from the forest they need to come and help searching for Lucas now this is funny go and fetch the men from the forest where were the men the men were working they were cutting down trees they were physically in the forest working where was Elias he's the only male in the island um or you know not working he was doing his own thing and this also again shows you how lazy Elias is also is convinced that the boy is gone and then excuse me need to take this seriously I need to go and start looking for him um as soon as possible needs to stay behind in case the Boy comes back obviously Barta will need Elias if there's bad um bad Omen if if there's a bad situation maybe when they find Lucas's body uh Elias needs to be with Barta to keep her strong uh the main finally arrive and an interrogation starts and when I say interrogation I don't mean this badly it's just simply trying to get information that ask Willem we have you last seen Lucas he says he saw Lucas on the side of the house when he was eating a sweet potato Christopher says he saw Lucas while he was playing with his Stones thank Marley remember she brings the panic she again tells the story of a guy named flip Lawrence who went missing and it was also a thick Mist like this and he has never been found Elia says no flip Lawrence didn't go missing um Lawrence is possibly trampled by elephants now this obviously brings Dan Marley now into another panic saying oh yes no the the elephants won't even feel when they're stepping on a little body like Lucas and then Elia says something he says elephants don't trample children interesting fact in the history of elephants trampling people there's no evidence of them ever trampling children the theory behind this is that they're very maternal figures therefore they know the difference between adults that can harm them and children that are innocent then the Men start looking for Lucas they go into the different directions led by a guy named Martins and then finally there's a voice over the speaker it is a third person speaker so this the speaker knows everything is like a narrator and they are saying that he this this voice is saying that there is a time Jump right so eight days later they decide to call off the search party they say the Constable says that it is impossible for a chance to survive eight days in the forest Martins who led the search party who also agrees with that news bartan Elias reacts it's a physical reaction that the audience can see without them saying anything Barta is in Black so she's dressed in black so she's already mourning um the boy's death or Mourning his the fact that he's missing she looks older um she looks defeated they've done that by her maybe having a little bit of a a sinking into on Sophie and Aunt Marley who is holding her up Elias are shaking his head from side to side in disbelief the voice of its speaker then announces another time Jump of seven months it's the 8th of August 1865. he says that after a big Reign the skeletal remains of a small child was found near the Kona River um if they just said that you would have assumed that those boys did and to be honest you wouldn't believe the race of the story so in order for you to to have doubt and think later in the story maybe Benjamin is this look at they bring in the words it could also have been that of a baboon now it is true that you cannot at that stage um distinguish especially if you're not anthropologists or doctors the difference between a little child's body in that of a baboon because they are very similar so this now brings the doubt so that later on in the story you might be sitting there wondering whether maybe Benjamin is Lucas or Lucas is the boy that's in the language thanks for watching
