We also learned of Ben Born again, and this past Sunday, my 9-year-old and I watched the very first episode, and at the end of it, I asked him if he wanted to say that prayer, and he said yes. The message in the cartoon helped me to lead my son to the Lord Jesus. He has already shared that he has been saved. I'm so thankful for all you do. Thank you. What a special connection between mom and son that they'll always have. You know, it's so encouraging to hear how the resources made available to people like Nikki are changing lives. He's for you. He's for you. He is for you. He's for you. [Music] Amen. Amen. You can have a seat. Good to see you all. Welcome to church everybody. I'm Pastor Jonathan Lori. Glad to welcome you to our Sunday morning services. Welcome also those of you who are watching us online right now. Good to be with everybody. Happy Mother's Day. Happy Mother's Day to all the moms. We love you moms. My dad will be sharing some special words for all the moms in the house. And so, uh, we'll be hearing from him in just a moment. But, you know, as I was thinking about moms this morning, there is one phrase I feel like moms hear a lot and, uh, they have to correct a lot, and we hear it as dads, too. And it's the phrase mine, right? Mine. How come nobody has to teach kids and just humans in general to be selfish? Like, it's just inside of us, right? like mine, that's mine, that belongs to me, right? And so is, you know, parents, it's like, no, sweetie, the car keys are not yours. No, sweetie. Uh, the little play car is yours, but you still have to share, right? And we constantly are having to reinforce that uh through not just their toddler years, but into their preaching years. And are we really any different? We still do the same thing. Hey, this is mine. This is mine. This belongs to me. It's all mine. Well, I think God is telling us the very same thing when he says uh in Psalms 24, "The earth is the Lord's and everything in it, the world and all who live in it." Okay, so God drops that bomb on us, right? He reminds us actually it's all mine, right? But what does God do? He shares with us, doesn't he? And he blesses us. And the things that he calls us to give to him in many ways, sometimes he gives back to us and he loves to bless us. You know, it's easy to fall into that mindset. This money, this time, this family, these opportunities, it's mine. It's because of me. I did it. I'm responsible for it. It's so easy to fall into that mindset. But, you know, giving, it's a foundational truth and it helps us change that mindset and we begin to recognize the truth of Psalm 24. The earth, the people, everything in it, it belongs to the Lord. God, thank you for what you have given to me. Thank you for the blessings that you've given to me in my life. It's all because of you, Lord. Bless your name. And you find that when you have that mindset shift, you go from becoming a mind mind selfish personality to more of a steward. You become more generous. You hold things with a looser grip. And you find that there is great blessing in that. The kind of mindset is freeing. It shifts us from ownership again to stewardship. And when we start living like stewards, generosity again stops feeling like a burden and starts feeling like joy. And so this Mother's Day, let's remember, we serve a generous God. A God who owns the cattle on a thousand hills. And he loves you and loves to bless you. And so as we give, we're not only fueling the work he's doing here at the church. We're also opening the door to transformation in our own hearts. And so this Sunday, I would invite you to participate with us and give to the Lord that which he has already given to you. And so there's a couple of different ways that you can do that. Uh up on the screen, there's a QR code you can scan or a website that you can go to, harvest.urch/g or uh in a moment, the ushers are going to come forward. The band's going to play a song, and we're going to pass the offering bags through the aisles, and you can drop uh your tithe and offering in that bag if you'd like to do that. But for now, let's uh pray and commit the rest of this service to the Lord. Father, we thank you for your generosity. Lord, we thank you for moms. We thank you for your character traits and attributes that we see in mothers, loving, self-sacrificing, nurturing. God, you um truly we are so thankful to be your children. We are thankful, Lord, that you bless us. And now, God, we give back to you. And we recognize that these things, these monies, our time, our families, our health, our resources, Lord, it doesn't belong to us. They're are gifts from you. And so, Lord, we give back to you today. We bless your name. We thank you for the greatest gift of all, which is the forgiveness of our sins and the hope of heaven. In Jesus name we pray. Amen. [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] Oh. All the saints and angels they bow before your throne. All the elders cast their crowns before the lamb of God and say you're worthy of it all. [Music] [Laughter] You are worthy of it all. For from you are all things and to you are all things. You deserve the glory. [Music] All the saints and angels they bow before your throne. All the elders cast their crowns before the lamb of God and sing. You are worthy of it [Laughter] all. You are worthy of it all. [Music] For from you are all things and to are all things. You deserve the glory. You are worthy of it [Laughter] all. You are worthy of it all. For from you are all things and to you [Music] all you deserve the [Music] glory. Day and night, night and day let incense arise. Day and night, night and day, let incense arise. Day and night, night and day, let incense arise. Day and night, night and day. Come on, church. You sing. [Music] Disey. Heat. [Music] [Applause] [Music] Heat. Yeah. Heat. [Music] [Music] to [Music] your [Music] glory. Amen. Let's pray together. Lord, as we have just sung, you are worthy of it all. Worthy of our praise, worthy of our honor that we extend toward you and acknowledging that everything that we have, including the breath in our lungs and the beat of our heart, is a gift from heaven. And we don't want to take that for granted. Lord, bless this time now as we hear from you. We've spoken to you. We've worshiped you. We've prayed to you in our time of worship and prayer. But now we want to hear from you from your word. So speak to us. We would ask now we commit this time of Bible study to you. In Jesus name we pray. Amen. May you can all be seated. Good morning. So last week I was in Washington DC. Uh we had the privilege of being uh at the White House for the National Day of Prayer and we were out there in the Rose Garden. It was a beautiful very hot day and uh see if you can find me in that picture. You know that little cartoon book, Where's Waldo? This is Where's Baldo? I'm in there. You'll find the bald head that the birds always aim for. But anyway, so Kathy and I were there. Uh, it was a great time to to pray and [Applause] worship. There's the greatest mother I know right there in that picture, Kathy Lori. Yes. But we had a we had a fantastic time and actually um here's another shot where we're just outside running around in DC uh there and you see the uh Washington Monument behind us. One of the cool things that I got to do in this trip and by the way coming back to that after we were done we went up on the stage there and we prayed uh for our nation and for our leadership and then we had an unexpected invitation to go into the Oval Office. So I was there with the president for a few moments and uh along with the other Christian leaders. It was a real privilege. Always is. But, uh, one of the wonderful things I did earlier in that day is I did an interview with Speaker of the House Mike Johnson. And, uh, and Mike is a great guy. He's a very strong believer. And we had a great time together. And I have a podcast now that we've launched and it's out there on all of our platforms. And the interview I did with him for this podcast is going to be played this week. and we talk about a lot of really interesting things, geopolitical things, spiritual things, his life, and much more. But when I go to DC, I go as an ambassador for Christ and for our ministry, and that's why I'm there. Some might say, "Well, Greg, did you go when President Biden was in office?" Never invited me, but if I had been invited, I would have gone. I would go and pray for any leader regardless of if I voted for them or not because I'm commanded in scripture to do that. Right. So, but uh so I had a prayer with uh Speaker Johnson and here's a a little video of that. I want to just thank you for all that you're doing and and I'm going to continue to pray for you and if you would be okay with it, I would like to just pray for you right now because you know there's no question, Mike, that and you said it's okay to call you Mike. I don't want to think people are think I'm disrespecting you. Sure, Greg, Mr. Speaker. Um, okay, pastor. No, we're friends. That's certainly appropriate. But I I I want to pray for you because God has placed you here for such a time as this. And as I listen to you, you are so just the right man for the right moment. And uh you know, I've heard said if you see a turtle on a fence post, you know he didn't get there by himself. Right. That's right. And God's put you here. God chooses the lowly things to confound the wise. Well, he does, doesn't he? And but I can see he's g given you also the wisdom and the temperament even to do this unusual job that you're called to do. So I'd like to on behalf of a lot of believers out there that appreciate you. I'd like to pray for you right now. Be honored. Okay. Father, thank you for Mike. Thank you for raising him up. Thank you for his life. And I pray first of all that you'll bless him and his family, Lord, his children. uh of course his wife and there's so much responsibility that he bears but yet Lord his faith is guiding him and you're using him and directing him and I pray that he'll receive the wisdom he needs. You tell us in scripture if any man lack wisdom let him ask of you and you'll give it generously. Give to Speaker Johnson the wisdom he needs to do the job you've called him to do. and thank you for the um relationship he has with our president and that he can say things that the president very few people could say and so continue to use him there as well. So thank you for him, bless him and we commit him to you in Jesus name we pray. Amen. Amen. Thank you. Thank you so much for this time. I've enjoyed it so much. Absolutely. Glad you're here. Thank you. So today is a very special day. It's Mother's Day. Yes, it sure is. How many of you are mothers out there? Raise your hand. Well, what do you want? A medal? Okay. No, seriously, we should give you a medal, but we have a little packet with seeds in it instead. So, we couldn't find any medals, but this is a nice little piece my wife wrote about Mother's Day that you might want to read, and then there's some little seeds to plant for some flowers later. But um we thank God for you and the important role that you play in our lives. And I heard about a little boy who was asked to explain the word mother. And he said, "Well, she's the person who does everything for free." But then he went on to say, "But when she gets sick, we get really scared because no one knows where their socks are." So you you know but but seriously you know moms play such a significant role in our lives and I hope you all remembered to acknowledge your mother today and uh to get her a card to gift. Oh, she said don't get me anything. That was a test. You better get her something and the day is not over with yet. So if you haven't do it now and uh you know it's interesting how the Bible actually uses the picture of a mother as well as a father to express his nature. Now predominantly God is presented in the masculine form in the Bible as a father who loves us. And I'm going to talk about that more in a few moments. There are some occasions when God likens himself to a mother, as in Matthew 23, where Jesus said, "How often I would gather your children together as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing." Now, it's interesting. God compared himself in that case to a mother hen uh watching over her chicks, hatching her eggs, caring for them. He didn't compare himself to a rooster. I mean, why? All they do is wake everyone up at 5 in the morning, then get into a fight with their own reflection, right? So, no, he compares himself to a mother hen and like uh a nur and like a woman, God cares about us. Isaiah 49 says, "Can a woman forget her nursing child and not have compassion on the son of her womb?" And God says, "Yet I will not forget you." Finally, like a mother, God comforts us in our time of need. When a child falls, who do they generally call for? Mom, not dad. Dad probably played a role in them falling because he was pushing them to do something uh that they maybe didn't want to do, but mommy, they cry out. And God says in Isaiah 66, "As a mother comforts, so I will comfort you." So ladies, you certainly deserve your own day. You should probably have a whole month. No question about that. Mother's month. We have gay pride month and we don't have mother's month. Something is wrong with this picture. Right. So, mothers, we want to honor you. And my way of honoring you today is I want you to stand throughout the entire service. No, it's honor. Just you stand. No, just for a moment. Ladies, if you're a mom, would you please stand? Any mother, please stand. I want to have us all pray for you. Beautiful. Lots of [Applause] you. So, of you that are mothers, how many of you are grandmothers? Raise your hand. Have your grandmother. A lot of grandmas here. Do we have any great grandmothers here? What? Wow. Well, if you're standing near one of these wonderful moms, just put a hand on her shoulder and and let's just pray for them. Lord, thank you for every mother in this room. Lord, the the tireless work they do so often unnoticed, so often not acknowledged, but you see what they do, Lord. And you, their heavenly father, promise that you will reward them openly, Lord. Bless them today. Encourage them today. Thank you for each of these ladies and we pray that this will be a a blessed, happy day for them. So we acknowledge their place and their importance and we ask you to bless them and we ask this now in Jesus' name. Amen. Thank you ladies very much. Let's turn in our Bibles to First John chapter 2. We're going through the epistles of John first, second, and third. And the title of my message is Signs of the Last Days and Why You Shouldn't Panic. 1 John 2 shows clearly we're living in the last days and all around us are signs of the times telling us that Jesus is coming again. There are promising signs that would indicate that perhaps we're going to see another spiritual awakening. And there are troubling signs as well. I think of the opening words that Charles Dickens wrote in his book, A Tale of Two Cities, which describes France right before her revolution. And it opens with these familiar words. It was the best of times. It was the worst of times. It was the age of wisdom. It was the age of foolishness. It was a season of light. It was a season of darkness. It was a spring of hope. It was the winter of despair. That could be said about the times we're living in right now. And that's a picture before us in 1 John chapter 2 where John writes 1 John 2:18, read with me, little children, it's the last hour. And as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrist has come. By which we know this is the last hour. They went out from us, but they were not of us. For if they had been of us, they would have continued with us. But they went out that they might be made manifest that none of them were of us. So if you're taking notes, here's point number one. The Antichrist is coming. Now, I don't I'm not laughing at that. I'm just laughing at the fact that I'm saying this on Mother's Day. Okay. It's just like Craig, seriously, it's Mother's Day and you're talking about the Antichrist. Yeah, I guess I am. Um, and there's no correlation between that and mothers, by the way. But it, this is the text before us. And, and there is a coming world leader that will emerge on the scene that the Bible calls the antichrist. He will be a global leader. He will be a man of peace. In fact, many will regard him as the greatest peacemaker of all time. But the fact is, he'll be the worst troublemaker of all time. See, the devil is an imitator. He likes to imitate that which is genuine. So whatever God has, the devil will have his version of it. God has his only begotten son. And in effect, if Satan had a son, this is him, the Antichrist. And not only is there a fake Christ, if you will, but there are fake Christians. Just as there are genuine followers of Jesus Christ, there are these imitation Christians out there as well. But this antichrist will emerge on the scene. Uh he's not going to be dressed head to toe in black with the Darth Vader theme playing in the background as he quotes AC/DC lyrics. No, he's going to be suave. He's going to be impressive. He's going to be highly intelligent. He'll probably be attractive uh and he will emerge initially as what could be a good guy, but he'll turn out to be the worst guy of all. Could artificial intelligence play any role in the rule of Antichrist? Elon Musk made this statement recently and I quote, "A form of artificial intelligence smarter than humans could create an immortal dictator from which we would never escape." End quote. Wow. That's quite a statement. But uh I don't worry about Antichrist because in my understanding of scripture, I don't believe Antichrist can be revealed until Christians are caught up to meet the Lord and what we call the rapture. That's what the Bible says. You say, "Well, Greg, what is that based on?" It's based on the passage that says, "He who now restrains will continue to do so until he is taken out of the way." And then that wicked one will be revealed. That's Antichrist whom the Lord will destroy with the brightness of his coming. So there's a restraining force in the world today. A restraining force that stops the wholesale spread of evil. A restraining force that speaks out for what is right and speaks out against what is wrong. And that force is the Holy Spirit working through the church. So once the church is raptured, caught up to meet the Lord in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, then the Antichrist can emerge because we're out of the way. Therefore, don't spend your time worrying about Antichrist. Focus your attention on looking for Jesus Christ. Okay, so that's point number one. Point number two, antirists plural. Antichrists are here already. Uh, and that's what John says. He he talks about the antichrist and antirist. Now understand the prefix anti doesn't just mean against. It also means instead of. So we could say instead of Christ's remember Jesus has said in Matthew 24 and what we call the Olivet discourse in the last days many will come in my name saying I am Christ. People are always looking for a substitute for Christ. Mark Zuckerberg of Meta says you don't have enough friends. I don't know maybe he doesn't have enough friends. Uh but uh he says we don't have enough friends. And his solution is not making more friends or socializing more. He says artificial intelligence may actually be the solution because it does a better job of knowing your likes and preferences. Okay, so I get it. So instead of going out and hanging out with friends, I'm supposed to put my arm around my Roomba and have a cup of coffee. I mean, what what is I mean, this is crazy really. And that this to me is antichrist. Understand what I'm saying? It's instead of Christ. I'm looking for a substitute for Christ. I'm looking for something to take the place of God in my life instead of Christ. The greatest deception is not atheism. It's instead of Christ thinking. And as I mentioned already, a sign of the end times will be pretend believers. 1 Timothy 4:1 says, "The spirit tells us clearly, and on the last days, some will turn away from the faith and they'll follow deceptive spirits and teachings that come from demons." Uh, something we hear about today are people who are what they call deconstructing, deconstructing their faith. They're questioning their faith. They're dismantling their faith. And they talk about church hurt. I've experienced church hurt. Uh and look, if that has happened to you, if you've been hurt in church or by someone in the church, I apologize on their behalf. All right? The church is full of broken people just like you. But uh but having said that, uh don't walk away from the church. Jesus certainly has not. Nor should we. I mean, the church is the place where you can ultimately find what you need and you can be taught the word of God and grow in your relationship with him and with others. But yes, there are some people that have been hurt. But having said that, I think sometimes people will call something church hurt when reality just they heard something they didn't like, right? So maybe a Christian friend confronted them and said, "Hey bro, why are you living with your boyfriend?" And it's funny, girls call girls bro now. Have you seen that? Everyone's bro. Even parents are called bro. Bro, wait. It's your mother. Bro. Okay. Bro, mom. What? It's But but you know, they'll say to you, you're living with your boyfriend or your girlfriend. And the Bible says that's sin. That's fornication. And you don't like that. I'm leaving the church. I have church hurt. You should be thanking that person for telling you the truth. That's not church hurt shirt hurt shirt hurt shirt hurt shirt hurt shirt hurt shirt hurt shirt hurt shirt hurt shirt hurt shirt that's trying to keep you from hurting yourself see they're doing you a favor like going to a doctor and the doctor says you need to do this surgery to repair this problem and well I don't like that I've doctor now give me a break you're going to keep hurt till you do what the doctor tells you to do and on a personal note I went to the doctor recently and I've been told I need a hip replacement Yeah. How many of you have had hip replacements? Okay, a few of you. So, great. I've gone from being a hippie to now I need a hip replacement. Perfect. I've gone from acid rock to acid reflux. And now my wife already had it done and uh and so the doctor told me I need to do this, but I've been putting it off because I don't want to get this surgery, but I know I need to do it eventually. But you know, sometimes we don't like what the doctor says to us. Sometimes we don't like what we hear in church. But we got to tell the truth in church. And we have to tell the truth from the word of God because you're not going to hear it in that culture out [Applause] there because they don't care about you and they don't love you, but God does. And he gives us his word. And the Bible says, "Faithful are the wounds of a friend, but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful. Open rebuke is better than secret love." I hope you have a friend that will tell you the truth. Because if you don't, they're not really as good of a friend as they could be. And we have to tell each other the truth. So, and people will, you know, uproot themselves. We're not going to that church anymore. Let's find another church. And they go to another church. Well, I don't like what they said about this. Let's go to another church and and then they go to another church and let's just not go to any church. And then one day they walk away from the faith. You go, what's that all about? What's going on here? Reminds me of a guy. He was stranded on stranded on a desert island and he was finally rescued. And they found that he had built three huts. And they said, "Well, these three huts, what are these? What are these?" He goes, "The first hut, that's my home." Okay. What's the second hut? That's my church. Oh, great. What's the third high? That's a church I used to go to. See, that's that's how some people are. But uh so what about the person who walks away from the faith? They leave the church. They leave their faith. They they say, "I'm not a Christian anymore." Has that person lost their salvation? I suggest to you maybe they never had salvation to begin with. They say they're deconstructing, but maybe they're deconstructing something that was never properly constructed to begin with. If your faith collapses, maybe it was never built on Christ to begin with. That's what John is saying. 1 John 2:19, they went out from us, but they were not of us. For if they had been of us, they would have continued with us. You know, people question their faith. Christians have doubts. We have our struggles and maybe we'll go astray for a time. Maybe we'll even go astray for a prolonged period of time. But if we're a true child of God, we'll come back home again like the prodigal son. The prodigal son was always a son of his father who deeply loved him. He went to a far country, Jesus said, wasted his money on crazy wild living. finally came to his senses and returned and was welcomed home by his father. But if a person says, "I'm no longer a Christian," and never comes back again, I suggest to you, they were not a Christian to begin with. Because if they were of us, they would have stayed with us. And because they didn't stay with us, it showed they were never of us to begin. So it all comes down to where you end up, where you land. And now let's shift gears to 1 John chapter 3. Behold what manner of love the father has bestowed on us that we should be called the children of God. Therefore the world does not know us because it did not know him. Beloved, now we are the children of God. It has not yet been revealed what we shall be. But we know that when he is revealed, we shall be like him, for we will see him as he is. A very important verse now. Everyone that has this hope in him purifies himself just as he is pure. So here's my third point. God loves you more than you could ever know. God loves you more than you could ever know. Please don't doubt that. You say, "I know he loves me. I'm so awesome." Actually, you aren't. But he loves you anyway. There are so many verses that say this. God says, "I've loved you with an everlasting love. Therefore, with loving kindness, I've drawn you to myself. Of course, John 3:16, for God so loved the world, he gave his only begotten son, and whoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. And Paul personalized that and said, he loved me and he gave himself for me. Uh, so there's a love that God has for every one of us. And because point number four, he loves you, he adopted you as his child. Look at 1 John 3:1. Behold what manner of love the father has bestowed on us that we should be called the children of God. By the way, this phrase that he uses here, behold, could be translated, behold what peculiar, out of this world kind of love God has bestowed on us. In other words, he's saying don't miss this. it. Look at this. This is an amazing love that God has for you. And he's adopted you into his family. Now, I've told you this before, but you know, as a boy, I never knew who my biological father was. My mom told me it was one guy, and I found out like 30 years later, he wasn't actually my father at all. My mom married and divorced seven times and had a lot of boyfriends in between. Uh, none of these husbands ever took an interest in me. It's like they get the beautiful Charlene, my mother, and this weird kid that likes to draw cartoons and collect snakes with her, right? Sort of part of the deal. None of them cared to have anything to do with me for the most part, except one man, and his name was Oscar Lori. And he was different from all the men married. It's almost like she married the same guy over and over again. uh except Oscar was different than all of them. He was a good man. He was a caring man. And he loved me enough to become my adopted father or I became his adopted son. And uh it reminds me of a story I heard about two kids who were arguing. One was a biological son, the other was an adopted son. And the biological son says, "Dad loves me more than you. I've got his DNA." And the adopted son said, "Well, he chose me. He got stuck with you. So God chose you. He knew your faults. He knows your shortcomings. As David said, you know, when I sit down, when I rise up, you know my thoughts before I think them." God chose you because he loves you. And you are a chosen child of God. Well, yes, it's true. We're all God's children. We hear that a lot. We're all the children of God. Is that true? I would say yes and no in a broad sense. We're all, let's just say, the offspring of God. We've been created by God in his image or separated him by our sin. But the way you become an actual child of God is by being adopted into the family of God. And not everyone walking this earth is an adopted child of God. Well, how do you become one? Well, you have to choose him back. He calls you, but you have to say, I want to be your adopted son. I want to be your adopted daughter. And the Bible says, for as many as received him, he gave them the power to become sons of God. But even when you are a Christian, uh you can have a relationship with God, but you can be out of fellowship with God. Let me illustrate with a family drama that's in the news a lot. It's the royal family of King Charles and he married Princess Diana and they have two sons, William and Harry. They're both part of the royal family. Harry is a royal son. William is a royal son. Now, William, of course, is the heir to the throne. So, we have the heir and the spare, I guess. Um but uh so William lives in England in a close relationship with his father King Charles uh is very sick. He's fighting cancer and uh and Harry is a son too, but he's not living in England. He's living here in America. So we could say of Harry, he's not in fellowship with his father. He's actually in Santa Barbara. That's where he is about 5,000 miles away from the UK. So, one is a close relationship, the other has a distant relationship. Both are sons. Nothing will ever stop either one of them from being the son of Charles and Diana and being a member of the royal family. But one has chosen to remain in close communication with this father and the other has not. And I hope they get that patched up because the window for reconciliation doesn't stay open forever. In the same way, we can have a relationship with God. I'm technically a child of God. I've been forgiven by God because I put my faith in Christ, but I'm not communicating with him. There's a distance between us. But the good news is if I'll reach back out to him, he'll receive me. The Bible says, "Draw near to God and he'll draw near to you." Again, back to the prodigal story. When the boy came to his senses and returned home, he was welcomed by his father. Point number five, the return of Jesus Christ should cause us to want to live godly lives. The return of Jesus Christ should cause us to want to live godly lives. Look at 1 John 3 verse 2. Beloved, now we are the children of God. Has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when he's revealed, we'll be like him. For we will see him as he is. He that has this open him purifies himself. If I would underline that and I'll come back to it. Purifies himself even as he is pure. We'll stop there. So, makeovers are very popular, right? Makeover your house. There's entire TV shows dedicated to home makeovers or makeover your wardrobe or makeover your appearance. This is the ultimate makeover. You're going to become like Christ. There's coming a day when as a Christian, you will see Jesus face to face. And at that moment, everything you ever struggled with will be gone. The sinful nature gone, the doubt gone, the pain gone. It's the ultimate makeover because God sees you for what you can become. Have you ever seen uh the statue of David created by Michelangelo? It's even a picture of it. It's so impressive. And in real life, it's so large. And it's hard to believe that a single man uh carved that out of a slab of marble. By the way, a a slab of marble that was rejected by other artists. They saw flaws in it. But Michelangelo looked at that slab of marble and saw David. It took him maybe three years to do it. He didn't have anyone helping him. And it's still one of the most amazing accomplishments by any human. Uh the story is told of of Michelangelo walking around the slab of marble and he was just saying, "It's beautiful." One of the workers said, "What do you mean it's beautiful? I don't see anything." And Michelangelo said, "I see David there." Well, the co the worker said, "I don't see him." Michelangelo said, "I do." And God looks at you and he sees what he'll make you into. And one day you will be like him for you will see him as he is. Now you're not there yet. Nor am I. Hopefully we're becoming more and more like Jesus as time passes. But one day we will be like him. So that should affect us and the way that we live here. You know this is talking about how should we live in light of the imminent return of Christ. And sometimes we get caught up into a lot of minutia. Minutia. I don't know what minutia is, but that too. Um, we argue about the order of prophetic events. We argue about this or that or we maybe major on minor details. But the big picture is while you're waiting the return of the Lord and we don't know when that is. We should want to be like him. And he that has this hope, what hope? The hope of Christ's return should purify himself. The Bible calls the rapture the blessed hope. So that hope should cause you to be purified. Let me put it another way. You should clean house. Let's say you had a very important guest coming to your home today. Uh he was going to be there, you know, at 12 noon and you are going to clean your house. You're going to get everything ready. It's going to be just perfect when he arrives. That's how you want to receive an important guest. And in the same way we know Jesus is coming. It should have a purifying effect in our life where we want to have our life right before him. To purify yourself means to cleanse yourself, to remove things that would pull you away spiritually. Over in Romans 13 uh 12, Paul writes, "The night is almost gone. The day of salvation will be here soon. So remove your dark deeds like dirty clothes and put on the shining armor of right living. Now if we really believe Jesus is coming, we will not be sinless, but we should sin less. Let me say that again. If we really believe Jesus is coming, how many of you believe Jesus is coming? You really believe that? Okay. If you really believe that, and I don't doubt that you do, then you should not be sinless. That's impossible. But you should sin less. First John 3, he says, "Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness." And you know that he was manifested to take away our sins, and in him there is no sin. Whoever abides in him does not sin. Listen to this. Whoever sins has not seen him nor known him. Wait, what? We read that and say, "But I sin all the time." In fact, doesn't John even tell me in verse John 18, "If we say we have no sin, we deceive oursel and the truth is not in us." And yet, here he is saying, "If you sin, you've not known him. And if you abide in Christ, you won't sin." But let's understand what he's really saying. It could better be translated whoever habitually sins or practices sin. It's not just saying whoever sins in general. If I'm habitually continually practicing sin, ongoing sin without remorse, without desire to change. Maybe I'm even celebrating the fact that I'm living in this sin. If that's the way you're living, John is saying you don't really know him. Uh the theological term for this is antonyomianism. Antonyomianism. If you're wondering what to name your next dog, maybe that I don't know. Antonyomianism. Sit. Right. Antonyomianism. And what is it? Well, it's a personal say, I'm saved by grace and I can do whatever I want. Christ has forgiven me and I know I'll go to heaven because of that and so I'm going to live as I choose. I'm going to sin with abandon. And and that's a person living that kind of lifestyle. If someone tells you they're a Christian and yet they live in willful unrepentant sin, that's not just a red flag. That's a full-blown warning siren. There's something really wrong. It's not about sinning. It's about being comfortable in your sin. A true believer will stumble. A true believer will sin, but they won't settle into sin. Because if you are settled into sin with no desire to change, that's an indication you have never know him. If there's no change, then there's no Christ. Again, this is antichrist. It's instead of Christ thinking it would be like someone joining a gym and uh you know they get the brand new workout clothes and they've got the ultimate shoes and they've got the giant water bottle. What is with these water bottles? Do you have to carry around a sparklets bottle now that I mean it's like they're so big. Are you Are you really going to die of thirst? There are still drinking fountains out there. There usually is water somewhere that you can get, but no, we carry. Okay, you've got your water bottle, you've got the workout outfit, you've got the shoes, you're taking selfies in the gym. I can't stand it when do people do that. So, don't take pictures of yourself in the gym. #fititforlife. Shut up. You know, so, but anyway, to make the point, how many of you do that? Raise your hand. No, don't. Don't. Cuz the person who does it would raise your hand. I do. In fact, here it is on my phone. No. Okay. Don't do that. But let's just say, you know, you join a gym and you never work out. In fact, you just eat donuts every time that you go. Now, in a broad sense, you are getting into shape. Just the wrong shape. More of a pearlike shape. In fact, they call you the Lord's pear now. It's not a good sign. But, uh, well, that would be like antonyomianism. You say, "Hey, I joined a gym. that's all I've got to do and I can do whatever I want. No, no, you got to go work out in the gym. And in the same, oh, I'm a Christian. I can do whatever I want to do. No, no. If you're really a child of God, your nature is changing. You should want to be more like him. You're not sinless, but you should desire to sin less. And this should have a purifying effect in your life where you're cleansing yourself, you're cleaning house, and you're wanting to be ready when Christ returns. That's what John is saying to all of us. Point number seven, we need to be rooted in Christ as we await his return. Be rooted in Christ. He says in 1 John 3:6, "Whoever abides in him does not sin." Again, that means sin habitually. So instead of living in sin, we should abide in Christ. An old Puritan minister put it this way. He calls it the expulsive power of a new affection. I like that. The expulsive power of a new affection. In other words, a stronger love drives out a lesser love. You let go of something because you found something better in its place. And last point, abiding in Christ is the golden key to spiritual growth. I was talking with a young man the other day and he's he's you know growing in his faith but he struggles with various things and and was talking about an experience he had here and another emotional experience he had there and he thinks this is a breakthrough moment and well it may or may not be but look here's the bottom line the secret is just putting one foot in front of the other and walking with God each and every day you know that's [Applause] it. There's no shortcuts and there's no secret way. When my grandkids are smaller, we go somewhere like maybe to a restaurant and we would get out of the car and I'd say, "Now, do you want to go in the regular way or do you want to go the secret way?" Well, they got excited, "Papa, we want to go the secret way." And I would just take them in a side door. But they thought we were going away. No one has ever gone before. Sadly, they were 19 when this No, they're they're very little. Very little. But, um, you know, we're always looking for the secret way. How can I get around it? You know, how can I get there more quickly? Well, it's going to take time and lots of it. But, it's a great way to spend your time learning, growing, becoming more like Jesus. As it has been said, it's long obedience in the same direction. But this is the key. Abiding in Christ. What does it mean to abide? By the way, John uses the word abide 27 times in first, second, and third John. But what does it mean? It means to remain, to dwell, to continue, to remain, to dwell, to continue. It speaks of close fellowship and constant communication with God. To abide in Christ means to maintain a living continual relationship with Jesus. Abiding is not about striving harder. It's about staying closer. When you're abiding in Jesus, you don't just visit him on Sundays. Hello, Lord. How are you? Here I am. Bless me this week. No, it's living and walking with him each and every day. Because the Christian life isn't just about rules. It's about relationship. And we're so close to the Lord, we don't want to do anything that displeases him. It's like when you have a great meal. You're full. Now, are you tempted to eat more food, especially bad food? Of course not. Oh, that's gross. I don't want I don't want to eat that. Why? Because you're full. So, when you're walking with God, you're full. You're satisfied from this relationship with him. So, when these enticements come your way, they don't have nearly the appeal they once had. You're literally repulsed by evil. And Jesus made this amazing promise in John 15. If you abide, excuse me, he coughed before he said it. That's implied in the original language. I don't know if you knew that. He coughed and then he No, he didn't. I'm just kidding. Okay. He said, "If you abide in me and my words abide in you, you shall ask what you will and it shall be done to you." And from a more expanded Greek translation, it would go as follows. Jesus speaking. If you maintain a living communion with me and my words are at home in you, I command you to ask at once for yourself whatever your heart desires and it will be yours. Wow. Now that's a promise. Ask whatever my heart desires and it will be mine. That That's incredible. But what do I do first? I maintain a living communion with him and his word is at home in me. See, if his word is at home in me, if I'm spending time reading scripture every day, if I'm walking with the Lord tightly, uh, praying, fellowshipping with other believers, hearing the word of God, it's going to change what I pray for. It's going to change what I prioritize. And if I do that, he promises this great answer to my prayer. It's all about abiding in him. Abiding is is rooting yourself. So, let's say to illustrate, I I planted a tree in my front yard. I want a peach tree in my front yard and I plant it. Taking root, looking good. Then, after a couple days, I'm thinking, I I should have put this on my backyard. So, I rip it up and I take it to the backyard and I plant it back there. Now, a couple more days go by and I think, no, I had it right the first time. So, I rip it up again and I put it in my front yard. A few more days go by, I put it in the backyard. I'm going to kill the tree. Okay? The only way that tree is going to take root and bear fruit is by being put in a single place, be nurtured, watered, cared for, pruned, and all the other things that go with that. And in the same way, you need to stay rooted. Stay rooted in the word of God. Stay rooted in the church. Stay rooted in the things that will help you to grow more spiritually. So let me close with [Applause] this. Let me close with this. If you feel far from God, guess who moved? God has not gone anywhere. He's there loving you. Has a plan for you. Wants to do amazing things through your life. But if you run from him, you're missing out on him. So maybe I'm talking to somebody that is hearing this all for the first time and you have not started this relationship with Jesus Christ. Uh let's just say to illustrate, you had the worst boyfriend of all time. unattractive, sloppy, never showered, ate with his mouth open, never complimented you, never affirmed you, always was late whenever he came to get you. He was the worst boyfriend of all time. But you stayed with them because, well, there were no other options at the moment. No other boyfriends were calling. He didn't really like this relationship, but that's what it was. And one day, the most awesome guy came along. Handsome, compassionate, caring, neat, complimented you, affirmed you. And then one day the handsome boyfriend said, "Would you be my girlfriend?" And you thought, "Well, I got to break up with the old boyfriend." Was that hard to do? No. Why? Because someone better came along. That's us before Christ. You know, we're living these lives we live and maybe at first some of the things we used to do were kind of fun. Yeah, that party was fun. Yeah, it was really fun when we did this other thing. And then after a while, it's not fun anymore. And after a while, it's actually kind of empty and miserable. That's where I was at when I was 17 years old. I, you know, I was partying, I was drinking, I was doing drugs, and I thought, I hate all of this. I wasn't a Christian, but I thought, "This is empty. This is a waste of my life. I see what it did to my mother, and now I'm doing it to myself, and I hate this life, but I don't know what to do." So, I'd already figured out that's not what I want to live for. Like the old boyfriend, right? The old girlfriend. We'll keep it right here. I The old girlfriend for me. Um, and then the new boyfriend, so to speak, came along. Then Jesus came along. He loved me. He forgave me. He transformed me. So I left the old for something far better. That's what it is to become a Christian, right? Think about [Applause] it. People ask the question, "Do I have to give up anything to follow Christ?" Yes, you do. I'm not going to lie to you about that. Yes, you do. You will turn your back on a sinful lifestyle. You'll turn your back on a selfish lifestyle. You'll turn your back on an empty, miserable lifestyle and you'll open the door to a new life in Christ. It's true. And the only regret you will have is that you did not do it sooner. Whatever you give up to follow Christ will be more than made up to you in this life and the life to come. Let me say that again. Whatever you give up to follow Jesus Christ will be replaced by something better and will be made up for in this life and the life to come. So here's Jesus saying, "I I love you. I want to forgive you. I want a relationship with you. I want to adopt you into my family as my son, my daughter. But you must believe in me. You must come to me." And how did he show this love to us? The Bible says, "While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." If you're ever tempted to doubt the love of God, take a long hard look at the cross and think of Jesus suffering and dying there, paying for your sins, paying for my sins. He came to pay a debt he did not owe because we owed a debt we could not pay. And now here is Jesus who died on the cross, who rose again from the dead three days later, standing at the door of your life and knocking. And he says, "If you'll hear my voice and open the door, I will come in." Would you like Jesus to come into your life? Would you like him to forgive you of your sin? Would you like to let go of that old miserable empty life that you pretend to be enjoying and enter into the new life that God has for you? You'll be amazed how God will change you. But you must come. In a moment, we're going to pray and I'm going to give you an opportunity to come to Christ or maybe to come back to Christ. Maybe there's somebody here that is the prodigal son or daughter that I talked about earlier. You've walked away from the Lord. You've walked away from the church. You have all your excuses as to why you did it. But that's what they are, excuses. But you can come back again and enter into relationship with God. It's really up to you. The ball's in your court. But if you want Jesus to forgive you, if you want him to come into your life, you can do it right here, right now. Let's pray. Father, I pray that your Holy Spirit will convict and convince any person here or any person watching this, wherever they might be. If they don't know you yet, help them to see how much you love them and help them to come to you and receive your forgiveness. Now, we ask this in the name of Jesus. Now, while our heads are bowed and our eyes are closed and we're praying, if you want Jesus Christ to come into your life, if you want him to forgive you of your sin, if you want to know that when you die, you will go to heaven. If you want to fill that big hole in your heart you've tried to fill with all the things this culture says will make you happy. If you're ready to have your sin forgiven and begin this new life with Jesus. I want you to raise your hand up right now and I want to pray for you. Raise your hand up saying, "I want Jesus today. I want my sin forgiven. I want to go to heaven when I die." Pray for me. Raise your hand up where I can see it. God bless you. God bless you. Wherever you are, raise your hand up high, please. God bless you. God bless you. Wherever you are, raise your hand up. Yes. God bless each one. You may never have another moment like this. God bless at all campuses. Harvest Orange County, Harvest Maui, you can raise your hand as well. God bless all of you. Now, I'm going to ask every one of you that raised your hand, if you would, please, I want you to stand to your feet, and I'm going to lead you in a prayer where you ask Christ to come into your life. Stand to your feet. Now, you heard me right. Stand up. If you raise your hand, maybe you did not raise your hand, but you want this relationship with God. Let me pray with you right now. Stand up wherever you are. Stand up. We're going to get this settled. God's going to change you. You can't change yourself. He's going to change you. Anybody else stand up now? Even if you did not raise your hand, but you want to come back to the Lord like a prodigal. You want to come to the Lord for the first time, stand and we're going to pray. I'll wait one more moment and then we're going to pray a prayer. Anybody else stand now. God bless all of you. Everyone that's standing and you that are watching as well, you can pray this same prayer. Pray this prayer out loud after me again as I pray. Pray this prayer out loud after me. Pray these words. Lord Jesus, I know that I'm a sinner, but I know that you're the savior who died on the cross for my sin and rose again from the dead. I turn from my sin now and I choose to follow you Jesus from this moment forward. Thank you for hearing this prayer and answering this prayer. In Jesus name I pray. Amen. God bless each one of you that prayed that prayer. Well, what a great message from Pastor Greg.
