RBT Competency Assessment Lecture Notes

Overview

  • RBT Competency Assessment is the same for both initial and renewal processes.
  • Initial is completed before taking the exam; renewal is done when the license is about to expire.
  • Assessment includes both interview and role play tasks.
  • Focus is on understanding the basics.

Competency Assessment Tasks

Measurement

Continuous Measurement

  • Frequency Data: Count how many times a behavior occurs.
  • Duration Data: Record how long a behavior lasts.
  • Latency Data: Time between instruction and the start of behavior.
  • IRT (Inter-response Time): Time between two responses.

Discontinuous Measurement

  • Difference: Only take data during parts of the session.
  • Types:
    • Partial Interval
    • Whole Interval
    • Momentary Time Sampling

Data and Graphs

  • Most Common Graph: Line graph.
  • X-axis: Time
  • Y-axis: Behavior
  • Graphing Frequency: Ideally every session.

Assessment

  • Role of RBT in Assessment: Assist BCBA.

  • Preference Assessments:

    • Types: Single, Forced Choice, Multiple Stimulus (with/without replacement).
    • Forced Choice: Present two items and record preference hierarchy.
  • ABC Data Collection:

    • Antecedent: Event before behavior.
    • Behavior: The behavior itself.
    • Consequence: What happens right after the behavior.

Skill Acquisition and Behavior Reduction

Discrete Trial Training (DTT)

  • Contrived teaching with clear beginning, middle, and end.

Naturalistic Teaching

  • Incidental teaching in natural environment.

Chaining

  • Forward Chaining: Start teaching from the first step.
  • Backward Chaining: Start teaching from the last step.
  • Total Task Chaining: Teach entire task with specific prompts as needed.

Shaping

  • Reinforce approximations of desired behavior.

Discrimination Training

  • Teach clients to differentiate between different stimuli.

Stimulus Control Transfer

  • Fade prompts to transfer control from a prompt to an SD.

Prompting

  • Types: Verbal, Physical, Positional, etc.
  • Prompt Fading: Move from most to least or least to most intrusive prompts.

Token Systems

  • Tokens as secondary reinforcers traded for backup reinforcers.

Crisis/Emergency Procedures

  • Follow company protocol for managing dangerous situations.

Professionalism and Requirements

Session Notes

  • Should be objective, complete, and contain relevant information.

Maintaining Client Dignity

  • Treat clients with respect, include in planning, age-appropriate interaction.

Professional Boundaries

  • Avoid dual relationships.

Supervision Requirements

  • 5% of hours worked must include supervision.

Seeking Clinical Direction

  • Seek guidance for unfamiliar behaviors, programs, or ethical concerns.

Conclusion

  • Completion of the competency assessment prepares you for the RBT exam or renewal.
  • Focus on understanding and practicing the basic skills required for an RBT.
