Exploring Duality in Jekyll and Hyde

[Music] hello my name is Dr Aiden Eliot and welcome to Dr Aiden's guide to literature welcome to this video on Stevenson's Jackle and hide in the next few minutes I will use just 10 quotes to help you get an understanding of this great novel The quotes and page numbers incidentally are taken from the penguin version of the novel The First quote comes from Mr utterson's friend Mr Enfield it describes Hyde he must be deformed somewhere he gives a strong feeling of deformity Enfield does not describe the physical deformity of Hyde for a reason the writer wants us to focus on the idea that there is something wrong but to realize that it is Indescribable in fact the real deformity is in his mind as we will discover it's also important that the men who describe Hyde in this chapter Enfield and utter are both rational and don't rush to judgment as a result any criticisms they do make are more powerful the second quote is from Dr Lan he began to go wrong wrong in the mind lanan who is talking here about Dr Jackal is also a reliable witness he's described in this chapter as a genial man working in the Citadel of medicine this means that he's one of the country's most respected doctors so when he gets angry and says Dr Jackal had started to go wrong 10 years earlier and adds that jaal's work is unscientific boulder dash we are meant to take him seriously incidentally boulder dash means something nonsensical quote three is from Jackal The Moment I choose I can be rid of Mr Hyde when utter discovers that the deformed and violent Mr Hyde will inherit Dr jackal's wealth when he dies he challenges Jackal at this point utter thinks that Mr Hyde is an evil person who's taking a advantage of Dr jaal and maybe blackmailing him this quote is jackal's response he can get rid of Hyde any time he wants also do note that in this chapter although Jackal is described positively as large well-made and smoothed faced we also learn that he's has something of a sish cast Sly means cunning and deceitful and this is meant to alert C to the idea that Jackal is hiding another part of his personality quote four with ap like Fury he was trampling his victim underfoot and hailing down a storm of blows in chapter 4 we hear how Hyde kills Karu without provocation two things are important here one Hyde who utter already sees as a threat to Jackal is now now described as apik in his Fury suggesting an outburst of primitive emotions two Karu the victim is described as kindly polite and innocent this is meant to convey the depth of Hyde's hatred towards the Civilized side of human nature the side that Dr Jackal represents quote five I swear to God I will never set eyes on him again after the murder utter is worried that jaal is in danger from hide and so he visits his house and although he finds jaal feeling unwell he's slightly reassured to hear jeal say these words and insist that he won't have any more contact with Hyde Jackal then hands utter a letter from Hyde claiming that he has escaped to avoid being arrested for the murder of Karu and that he will never return but later when utter looks at it in detail the writing appears similar to Dr Jackal has the letter been forged and why quote six is from Dr lanan I am quite done with that person and I beg that you will spare me any illusion to one whom I my regard as dead when utter visits Dr lanan and mentions that jaal is unwell he gets this unexpected reaction lanan is so disgusted with Jackal who he refers to as that person that he doesn't even want to be reminded of him in fact he regards him as good as dead an illusion is to call something to mind without actually mentioning it in this chapter we also discover that lanan has had a shock that will kill him we want to know what the shock is but at this stage we're not told quote 7even taking the air with an infinite sadness of me like some disconsolate prisoner uton saw Dr Jackal the word Min describes how a person's outer appearance indicates their character or mood disconsolate means unable ble to be made Happy by anyone or anything this is the final time utter will see Dr jaal alive and jaal sits at a window like a prisoner filled with infinite or unending sadness shortly after this jeal slams the window and disappears from A View quote 8 from a letter left by Dr Jackal my dear utter when this shall fall into your hands I shall have disappeared this refers to a letter from jeal that utter finds when he breaks into jackal's laboratory uton had feared that Mr Hyde was back and was going to kill Jackal but what he finds is that Hyde is dead he's just committed suicide but where is Dr Jackal he's disappeared has he been killed has he escaped then ERS finds several documents and begins to read the first document he reads is from Dr lanan and it describes a moment when Hyde visited his house he put the glass to his lips his face became suddenly black and the features seemed to melt and alter this describes the moment that Hyde stood in front of lanan and drank the potion that turned him back into Dr Jackal it is the moment lanon realizes the terrible truth Dr jeck has been able to transform his body and as Mr Hyde carry out various crimes including murder notice the word melt as well which gives us the image of Hyde's body dissolving and then reforming as jeal finally quote 10 I was slowly losing hold of my original and better self and becoming slowly Incorporated with my second and worse in the Final Chapter we read the letter left for erson by Dr Jackal which reveals why he changed into Mr Hyde he wanted to separate his good and evil sides so that he could indulge in Forbidden Pursuits without feeling guilt or remorse but what Jackal had discovered was that they cannot be kept separate one side or the other will be dominant and if you want to know more about how and why Dr jaal went from respectable citizen to murderer and tortured recluse I will be analyzing chapter 10 in Greater detail in my next video so do look out for some of these features as you read and study this novel and I hope this brief video has given you some new insights that will help you
