Plant Tissue - Leaving Cert - Revision Notes - Biology

Tissue Definition

  • A group of similar cells that have a similar function.
  • Three main types of plant tissue:
    1. Dermal tissue
    2. Ground tissue
    3. Vascular tissue

1. Dermal Tissue

  • Function: Protects the surface of plants.
  • Covers the entire plant from roots to leaves and flowers.

Revision Question

  • Primary role of dermal tissue?
    • Protects plant surfaces

2. Ground Tissue

  • Fills the inside of a plant.
  • Function depends on location.
  • Functions include:
    • Food storage (in roots/stems)
    • Photosynthesis (in leaves)

Revision Question

  • One function of ground tissue?
    • Food storage

3. Vascular Tissue

  • Function: Transports materials around the plant.
  • Two types of vascular tissue:
    1. Xylem:
      • Transports water and minerals from roots to aerial parts of the plant
      • Movement is always upwards
    2. Phloem:
      • Transports food (sugar and nutrients) around the plant
      • Movement can be upwards or downwards

Exam Focus

  • Name a type of plant tissue and its adaptation:
    • Dermal tissue has a thickened cell wall.

Revision Question

  • Primary role of phloem?
    • Transport food in plant

The Leaf

  • Dermal Tissue = Epidermal Tissue
  • Vascular Tissue = Xylem and Phloem
  • Ground Tissue = Mesophyll Tissue
  • Stomata: Openings for gas exchange
  • Photosynthesis occurs in ground tissue; light passes through transparent dermal tissue to reach it.
  • Photosynthesis: Process by which plants use sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water to produce glucose and oxygen.

Revision Question

  • Role of stomata in leaves?
    • Gas exchange during photosynthesis
