Introduction

Shadows and Symbols

  • Law of Moses: A shadow that typifies Christ.
    • Abinadi's teaching: The Law as a shadow of Christ.
    • Jesus mentioned that Moses and prophets taught about Him.

Types of Christ in Biblical Figures

  1. Isaac

    • Miracle birth similar to Christ.
    • Miraculous birth prophesied like Jesus.
    • Carried wood for sacrifice, akin to Christ carrying the cross.
    • Abraham's test mirrored God's sacrifice of His only Son.
  2. Jacob

    • Misinterpretation of hymn lyrics can obscure meaning.
    • Jacob's ladder in Genesis 28: a type of Christ.
      • Angels ascending/descending (Genesis 28 / John 1).
      • Jesus as the ladder - path to heaven.
    • Jacob's name change to Israel; fathered 12 tribes.
  3. Joseph

    • Favored son sold into slavery.
    • Consistent faithfulness despite adversity.
    • A type of Christ: both suffered despite righteousness.
    • Saved family from famine, similar to Christ's role as savior.

Law of Moses: Foreshadowing Jesus

  • Feast of Tabernacles

    • Celebrated in Jesus' time, points to Christ.
    • Three elements:
      1. Water Ceremony: Jesus as the source of living water.
      2. Light: Jesus as the light of the world.
      3. Sacrifices: Jesus offers eternal life over death.
  • Passover

    • Four connections to Christ:
      1. Lamb of God: Jesus identified as the lamb.
      2. Crucifixion Timing: Mirrored with Passover lambs.
      3. Hyssop Plant: Used in both Passover and Jesus' crucifixion.
      4. No Broken Bones: Fulfillment of scripture, likened to Passover lambs.

Sacrifices in the Law of Moses

  1. Daily Sacrifice

    • Offered twice daily, connected to Jesus' crucifixion.
    • Encourages daily devotion, akin to following Jesus.
  2. Freewill Offering

    • Symbolizes voluntary service.
    • Christ’s sacrifice was voluntary (John 10).
    • Encourages choosing service joyfully.

Shedding of Blood and New Covenant

  • New Covenant

    • Jesus' blood as the new covenant with humanity.
    • Old Testament connection: Exodus 24.
    • Jeremiah 31: Promise of a new covenant.
    • Importance of sacrament as remembrance of Christ’s death.
  • Christ’s Sacrifice

    • An all-in sacrifice, fully committed.
    • Encourages believers to be all-in with Christ.
