CNA Procedure for Changing Bed Sheets

Introduction

  • CNA Name: Patti
  • Patient Name: Mr. Jones
  • Objective: Change sheets while maintaining patient privacy and comfort

Initial Preparations

  • Greeting and Consent: Patti introduces herself and confirms with Mr. Jones if it is okay to change the sheets.
  • Curtain and Handwashing: Curtain closed for privacy; hands washed before starting.
  • Supplies Needed:
    • Top sheet
    • Bottom sheet
    • Pillowcase
    • Privacy blanket

Changing the Sheets

Step 1: Preparing the Patient

  • Place privacy blanket over patient for warmth and privacy.
  • Ask Mr. Jones to hold the blanket in place.

Step 2: Removing Soiled Sheets

  • Ask Mr. Jones to scoot and roll to one side.
  • Remove and roll soiled sheet inward, tuck under the spine.

Step 3: Placing Clean Sheets

  • Positioning:
    • Unfold and attach corners of the clean sheet.
    • Roll clean sheet toward the patient, tucking under the soiled sheet.
  • Ask Mr. Jones to roll to the other side.
  • Remove soiled sheet completely and place in dirty linen.
  • Unroll clean sheet and attach corners securely.

Step 4: Finalizing Bed Making

  • Assist Mr. Jones back onto his back and to the center.
  • Place top sheet over the patient, remove privacy blanket, and place it in dirty linen.
  • Secure sheets, make hospital corners, and ensure foot space.

Pillowcase Change

  • Remove and replace pillowcase without contact with uniform.
  • Place clean pillow under Mr. Jonesโ€™ head, opening facing away from the door.

Final Checks and Comfort

  • Ensure Mr. Jones is comfortable.
  • Provide call light and offer additional help (magazine, etc.).

Closing

  • Open the curtain.
  • Wash hands and dispose of barrier.
  • Review steps mentally for corrections.
  • Confirm with evaluator that skill is completed.
