Lecture on Types of Poetry
Introduction
- In the previous video, we discussed the origin and types of Poetry.
- Poetry is mainly divided into two types:
- Subjective Poetry
- Objective Poetry
Subjective Poetry
- Also known as personal or lyrical poetry.
- These are short poems related to the poet's emotions, thoughts, and sensibilities.
- Main types are:
1. Lyric
- Derived from the Greek word 'liar' (musical instrument).
- A short song sung with a musical instrument.
- Expresses a single mood or feeling.
- Focused on themes like life, love, death.
2. Sonnet
- Derived from the Italian word 'sonneto' (sound).
- A 14-line poem written in iambic pentameter.
- Examples are Shakespeare's sonnets (like "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day").
- Two types:
- Petrarchan Sonnet: Divided into groups of 8 and 6 lines.
- English Sonnet: Three quatrains and a couplet.
3. Elegy
- Expression of sorrowful emotions.
- Written upon someone's death.
- Example: Thomas Gray's Elegy
- Pastoral Elegy is a special type.
4. Ode
- An emotional poem dedicated to a person or subject.
- Written with feelings of love, honor, or admiration.
- Two types:
- Pindaric Ode
- Horetian Ode
- Example: P.B. Shelley's "Ode to the West Wind"
