Week 6- Climate Change ACTIONS 8/11-Greta Thunberg's Climate Activism Journey

the next day saturday she attended the first ever united nations youth climate summit but the main event came up on monday when she addressed the real meeting the united nations climate action summit this is her famous how dare you speech which again is on the gretetenberg page for you to look at she said people are suffering people are dying entire ecosystems are collapsing we are in the beginning of a mass extinction and all you can talk about is money and fairy tales of eternal economic growth how day it is this paragraph according to the editor of rolling stone magazine that inspired them to produce that special edition which is the other resource that i've provided you with the popular idea of cutting our emissions in half in ten years only gives us a fifty percent chance this is simply not acceptable to us we who have to live with the consequences you are failing us but the young people are starting to understand your betrayal the eyes of all future generations are upon you and if you choose to fail us i say we will never forgive you the following friday greta now in canada she met the canadian prime minister and then led a huge turnout in montreal look at the size of this thing half a million people around the world six million people joined in in marches and strikes that day there were events in los angeles a few of my fall 2019 went students participated it was the biggest event in the world to that date after these events greta sunberg stayed on in the united states she was planning to attend the next united nations climate meeting which was scheduled to take place in december in santiago chile and of course with no plans to fly she was looking for some means of surface transport to get her to chile in south america as she said i will stop on the way and visit as many places as i can and of course protest every friday no matter where i am some places that she stopped and led protests included edmonton and vancouver in canada chicago illinois iowa city where she made the observation that right now the world leaders keep acting like children and somebody needs to be the adult in the room on to denver colorado and finally on november the 1st los angeles california here are some pictures of the event i and my family went some of those pictures are mine but later that day a sudden change of plan the news broke the chile was too politically unstable they said they could not host the meeting in december after a day or two of uncertainty madrid in spain said they'd hold it there and greta tunberg was suddenly on the wrong continent even the wrong side of the wrong continent she put out a call for help and an australian couple sailing the world with a catamaran and publishing video logs regularly on youtube volunteered to help so back to the east coast as fast as possible and off on this boat on a freezing cold morning out across the gulf stream through some seriously rough weather which happens in the atlantic in winter arriving in lisbon portugal just in time to take a train to madrid in spain and give her speech at the conference that speech is the second to last one on the gretenberg page that i keep referring to 2020 in january now age 17 she returned to davos switzerland for the next world economic forum meeting where she said basically i talked to you last year about urgency of action what have you done diddly squat let's be clear she said we don't need to quote lower emissions our emissions have to stop if we are to have a chance to stay below the 1.5 degree target the right the left as well as the center have all failed party politics not useful unlike you she concluded my generation will not give up without a fight this is the last speech on the um greta sandberg resource page then of course covet 19 and like the rest of us stuck at home communicating electronically will of course unfortunately no more of the friday protests so the kind of the profile the exposure of her action has decreased because there's no longer these massive crowds out in the streets every week in july she was awarded the first ever golbenkian prize for humanity an enormous honor that actually came with a little over a million dollars she is now giving that money away basically a hundred thousand dollars at a time to environmental causes starting with um an effort to protect brazilian rainforests in august her gap year came to an end and she started back to finish high school so where do we stand today regarding action on climate change we don't all the greenhouse gases aren't just increasing their accelerating no country is living up to the commitments they made in the 2015 paris climate accord and the goals agreed to in the paris meeting weren't enough anyway this is a huge crisis but it's a slow moving crisis and nobody seems to understand the urgency here in the united states the situation is particularly bad and the reason for that is the long-standing campaign by the fossil fuel industry they've spent billions of dollars on misinformation they're still at it today the heartland institute a right-wing pro-industry anti-environment organization tied to the trump administration is paying the german teenage girl to make anti-greta sundberg speeches greta tunberg does what she does out of concern for the environment and entirely at her own expense this german kid is being paid a substantial salary by an american pro-industry group to say the opposite the federal government has done nothing about climate change republican administrations have had no intention of doing anything the intervening democratic administrations have tried made some progress only to see that progress undone by the next republican administration some states led by california have made some progress fighting the federal government every inch of the way like supporting the kyoto protocol that is not enough got a ways to go gratitude and the millions of young people that she's inspired are trying to get the facts out there they're trying to get people to appreciate and understand the facts here in the united states that isn't enough for a long time now it's been the semi-official policy of the republican party that climate change either doesn't exist or is something completely unimportant this has been repeated so often that today it really isn't about science and the facts it's become a belief system take a look at this graph it's published as you see by the pew research center which is a national think tank well regarded for having no political bias they put out a questionnaire they asked people about their party political affiliations or leanings as they included here they asked how much education these people had and they asked them if they believed that the earth is warming due to human activity among responders who regarded themselves as democrats as you can see here the percentage who regard climate changing as a human caused problem rises dramatically with increasing scientific education the more you know the more you worry among republican respondents didn't matter how much education they have there's no significant change basically three-quarters of them don't believe in human-caused climate change it's easy to look at this graph and say now you can't educate a republican but it's much more serious than that the issue has become a belief system to many people their beliefs are who they are when you present somebody like this with facts showing that what they believe is wrong you're challenging their beliefs you're challenging their integrity and to maintain that integrity they have to ignore the facts and fight harder to hold on to their beliefs and that graph shows that very clearly when those people die their beliefs die with them but out of fairness to the younger generation you guys who have to live with us we can't really afford to wait that long we have at this time no really good answer to this problem
