Integrating Social Emotional Learning in Education

good afternoon fellow educators i emailed you the powerpoint uh it it's nice to have it in front of you so that if there's any questions you can write it on the sidebars or you can there's resources that you can click and there's also some conversation online platforms that we will be collaborating on um so today we will be talking about social emotional learning and how integrating it into daily lessons can improve students academic performance attitudes relationships and perceptions of schools behaviors you will understand how to reduce students anxiety and behavior problems through various techniques that will lead the children to find more joy in learning this is so important now with kids coming back from a pandemic and staying home all the time some didn't have parent support some did and they didn't have a lot of interaction with other students who knows what they're coming to school with all that baggage so this is more important than ever that we need social emotional learning in our schools so um we're going to start off with a fun little strategy called morning meeting kind of just get our minds into it i'm going to explain what scl stands for social emotional learning the components of social emotional learning why it's so beneficial and we'll i'll share some activities that you can be working on in your classrooms and then a few then we'll get to do a fun cooperative learning activity called save fred and then i'll provide some additional resources and then also explain to you how our next steps in a couple months we're gonna have another follow-up professional development on uh second step curriculum as well as a few other like break down the components of social emotional learning because there's a lot to it so uh before we actually get started just a few social norms if you have cell phones please just make sure they're silent i understand there's emergencies so you don't need to completely turn them off uh just be careful with your what you're doing please be the active listeners and engaged in what we're doing um and then i also be courteous of your time so that we can try to end early so before we begin let's talk about i'm going to share with you one um social emotional fun interaction that i've done in my classroom for years and it is so beneficial it's called morning meeting and i integrate it every day um an actually excellent way to start each morning and promoting a climate of trust and academic growth and positive behavior i included a picture of the book and actually has a link so that you can go and purchase that if you'd like to and read it and start using it so anyways it has four components of it there's the greeting one sharing group activity and morning message um you can course can amend it to fit into your own classroom so with my class my 32 fifth graders yes that's how many i would have them come up in the beginning on the carpet as much as we possibly could have them all circle around and yes we'd have them all walk you know start and shake hands say good morning and then share and i try to make it only about 10 minutes each morning and it was a great way to build some classroom culture and kind of make a best feel family and who knows what they're coming home from home with and coming into the classroom with so kind of just washing that away starting fresh with our kids and so we are going to start by having a greeting so what that means is that they would look at their partner firmly grab their hand and i yes i make sure i teach my kids how to actually grab a handshake and look them in the eyes and they say good morning and their name um and so why don't we just start that right now why don't you go ahead and to the each person next to you look at their eyes and say good morning or last day good afternoon and then say that christmas thing good afternoon well and also i forgot to mention uh because especially with the panda if anyone feels like they're sick or they're uncomfortable i've also done with my kids actually with the kids we've done sometimes just elbows and they look at each other and say good morning or they just look at each other and make sure that they say good morning and say their name um because i understand that sometimes it can be uncomfortable now at this stage um so that's the first part of so again this is an ex social emotional strategy morning meetings and then another component is sharing where students share some news or information about themselves and respond to each other articulating their thoughts feelings and ideas positively again it's being able to build those social skills and relationship skills with their classmates um and for example on mondays i would have students go around and share what they did over the weekend so they're being able to talk about something like one thinks sometimes they talk about their entire weekend just one thing that they love and uh again it just builds that classroom culture and social skills and even self-confidence pretty much so today i'd like you to talk to your partner about what comes to mind when you hear social emotional learning and again you don't have to we're not going to go around one person each that's what i do in my classroom but here just partner up with someone and go ahead and share what comes to mind when you hear social emotional learning i'll give you a few minutes to do that well you know the whole social aspect of it is exactly very important for our kids to be practicing today especially yeah all right so uh the final two components of morning meeting are having the students accomplish a short whole class group activity where students reinforce learning and building class cohesion um so for example you could have your students line up alphabetically but they can't say anything so they have to do it silently um or like by their names or from tallest to shortest or have like one on one foot so it's like working together as a class um and something again it's quick but has them working as a group to do something um and then uh we then there's the morning message again i haven't done the morning message as often and if you want to do this religiously that's your choice but like with time constraints i sometimes take that off but it's where they practice their academic skills by reading the morning message whatever the teacher is sharing with us the class and conversing about a note posted by the teacher like i said um so again it has been effective but sometimes i take it out due to everything uh so now let's really get into social emotional learning again that was all just kind of the beginning aspects of showing you an example of having morning meeting which is a strategy you could use in your classroom of course you do not have to now what is social emotional learning it is the process where students and adults develop vital emotional and social skills and experiences to be able to understand and manage their emotions while they're in class and at home and everywhere in the community set up and achieve positive goals short and long-term goals feel and show empathy for others even with the community community and i'll break down this even more when i talk about the components establish and maintain supportive relationships so building those social skills and making responsible decisions going beyond just knowing what's right and wrong but how to resolve problems and so that all is how do we do that by explicitly embedding them into daily lessons so sometimes people have heard oh i'll just do a 15 minute social emotional actual lesson okay that's all right but our whole goal is to have it be throughout the day throughout as you're teaching oh the math lesson how could i incorporate that into a math lesson um so yes basically it helps kids become great citizens in this in the world which is really what we need right now um and they also really enjoy learning and thrive academically so here are the different components of social emotional learning um i'm going to take a moment right now and pass out the framework it's castle it's the cooperative it's their actual website's framework and i thought maybe you'd want to see it pass it out for a second so as you can see social emotional learning is broken up into five competence areas they have been just transcribed into learning standards and competences that articulate what students should know and be able to do for academic success school and civic engagement health and wellness and fulfilling careers so the first one is self-awareness it's being students being self-aware and understand their emotions and values and thoughts and how they affect behavior so that means being able to identify their emotions and how it's affecting them and others around them being able to self with self perception their own identity recognizing their own strengths and how they can use them sense of self self-confidence and self-efficacy also advocating like when they need they need anything or are needing some type of resource being able to do that because i don't know about you but a lot of my students have a hard time really knowing what they need to ask for help so again being able to be self-aware the next one is self-management so being able to manage their emotions and their thoughts and behaviors so like with impulse control how many of you have ever had a student who's had the impulse control yeah yeah that's what i thought so um or like stress management self-discipline self-motivation perseverance goal setting organization skills again it's this whole this branch right here of being able to have their themselves in the classroom and how they can interact and then the next one is social awareness so with this it's how can uh students empha empathize with others with from diverse backgrounds cultures and contexts again which is very important for what's going on in our society now perspective talking talking taking sorry empathy appreciating diversity respect for others so which is again a big thing right now we want this next generation to be i mean ultimately better than any other generation how realistic is that but that's what we would like and so having this be now into our curriculum would be great um the next one is relationship skills and where students establish and maintain healthy and supportive relationships so how do they communicate with others social engagement building relationships sometimes students are very isolated so having that being able to create not just one friend but multiple friends not having being too clicky being open uh working cooperatively how can they interact with others uh resolving conflicts oh not just oh don't worry you're they're not gonna play again a winning losing game knows how do you resolve those conflicts of yep i lost but i'm okay with it um helping or seeking help and then the final one is responsible decision making so like identifying when there's a problem or if they have a problem analyzing any situations uh solving problems evaluating reflecting ethical responsibility um again all very important that's kind of what it says own little entity so again these are ones that we can you could spend a long time talking about each and one of these things but we'll just um our next professional development will actually go into this more and how we can actually take a piece of that and put it into a lesson without actually changing like a math lesson or a language arts lesson how can we do that so i'm going to give you a second just think right now think of your own classroom which of these like even just like one of the bullet points or a whole entire area do you see you need to work with your students thinking about your own so it's like ooh yep you know this group of students definitely needs to work on this or this so i'm gonna give you a second just think about your own class and what you might need to focus on all right so social media uh social emotional learning is meant to be utilized every day as i mentioned in different contexts beginning with curriculum and instruction and classroom climate so that's kind of why we have this and again this is taken from the castle website just like how they describe it so first it should be or it begins in the classroom with curriculum and instruction um explicit instruction too it's not just a random 15 minutes here oh i might have said that word no no it needs to be all the time and embedded across all subject matters and in cooperative learning activities so for example a teacher could designate a lot of time for a lesson or they can court daily morning meetings as we mentioned or use a story time for teachable moments um and then make spec space for reflective writing there's so many different things that you can do and i'll talk about a few of those activities in a bit um so and then it goes into the schools and further more into how um it should be now school-wide so it's not just in your classroom that classroom culture because this is where i've kind of stopped i'm like oh it's just in my classroom but no it should be a whole school that's why we're trying to work together as a team and administration the district and then eventually it can't stop there it has to be in their homes being with their parents and then even the communities how can they how can they affect the communities around them how can they make a difference in this world like having them know that
