Definition: A group of words without a subject-verb combination

Meaning in a sentence: "I built a beautiful home"
Types of Phrases
There are five types of phrases corresponding to the five parts of speech:
Noun Phrase
Verb Phrase
Adjective Phrase
Adverb Phrase
Prepositional Phrase
1. Noun Phrase
Definition: A phrase that functions as a noun in a sentence
Contains a noun and modifiers
Examples:
"A woman in the window shouted for help"
"She bought a decent black shirt"
2. Verb Phrase
Definition: A group of a main verb and a helping verb
Examples:
"She has finished her work" (has finished = verb phrase)
"You should study" (should study = verb phrase)
3. Adjective Phrase
Definition: A phrase that gives more information about an adjective
Modifies noun
Examples:
"I am very happy with his work" (very = adjective modifier)
"Cost of the car is way too high" (way too = adjective modifier)
4. Adverb Phrase
Definition: A phrase that gives more information about an adverb
Modifies verb
Examples:
"They ran really fast" (really = adverb modifier)
"He drank the milkshake much quicker" (much = adverb modifier)
5. Prepositional Phrase
Definition: A phrase that gives information about prepositions
Provides information on time, location, position, or condition
Examples:
"He is sleeping on the carpet" (on = preposition)
"Always speaks in a loud voice" (in = preposition)
