Chapter 20: External Causes of Morbidity (V00-Y99)

  • Purpose: Provide additional data for injury research and prevention
    • Capture how, where, and intention of the injury
  • Usage:

    • Should never be a principal diagnosis
    • Could be required by payers (e.g., insurance claims)

  • Z Codes: Used to indicate reasons for healthcare encounters

    • Screening Codes
    • Observation Codes
    • Aftercare Codes
