Audio Editing Techniques with Adobe Audition

all right so let's start with the tutorial it's in the file that I shared you guys there are several audio files so you can extract them and bring EQ 1 to eq 6 and also now just bring everything to the Adobe Audition file step it so at the moment we are in the waveform view of your other B audition so if let's say we double-click on the flat or mp3 track we'll see this this is the waveform and in some version you probably don't have this preview editor at the bottom and most of the newer version you will see this so basically what ever changes we do in the top one will be reflected to the bottom one it's like a before-and-after thing but anyway this is a music file so let me reduce the volume a bit so I can speak it alright so what we want to do today is to get ourself from Miller rise to wave equalizer alright so if you look at the bottom here there's a properties and the desert in effects rack if you don't see effects rack you can go to window and then effects rack right so this will bring it up right in the first track in the first rack you have an arrow here all the way to the right click on it and then you can go to filter and EQ and pick parametric equalizer and this will pop up so basically if you look at this at the bottom here is your frequency range you can see this is 20 and this 20 K right low it's the bass and then the high is the treble and everything in between is the mid range so what I want to do now is to know what we happened to our sound when we adjust or we play around with the frequencies so let's say every increase or decrease what happened to the sound so let's play and as we play I will boost and I will cut so that we can hear the changes notice that when I boost it in this area the bass becomes louder becomes bigger right it's more boo me if I cut it a it will decrease it will reduce right so that's what the frequency in the equalizer will do to your sound the frequency of that area will be increased if you push it up and decrease if you pull it down the same goes with other area it will affect those areas so the best way to know what's going on is to sweep meaning to just just move it right so I'm going to move it slowly so that you guys can hear the difference [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] right so at certain part of the frequency when we posted certain musical instrument will be affected like guitar for example if we boost it here it becomes a bit more harsher or louder and every we pull it down becomes softer [Applause] [Music] when we pull it down the big guitar sounds a bit mm a bit muffled [Music] over here it doesn't seem to affect the guitar that magic [Music] right so this this is what permits are equal it will do it will shape or change the quality of your sound and you can use this as a mesh as a method to to to fix a particular problem or to match a particular sound source right so if let's say you want your sound quality to be the same as another reference source for example I have this CD that I really love and I have this recording that I want to sound as close as possible to that the sound from that CD so all I need to do is to make comparison and try to match the the frequency or the EQ as much as I can right all the thing you won't you won't be able to do it or to imagine identically but you can try to make it as close as possible right so the frequency range here is affected by this curve right so this is called Q and you can change the curve by changing the Q with so if I change this is number one if I change it you can see that becomes narrower if I decrease it becomes wider so then move the narrower the Q is the more targeted new frequency you want to adjust so in this case the same make it narrower [Music] so you can see that it's really focused on the kick drum [Music] right so you can basically adjust this to your liking and to the purpose of what you want this EQ to to do alright so play around with this get yourself familiar rice with what the frequency range will do to a particular sound and the more you familiarize with the EQ the easier it will get for you to to do the exercises later alright so next is we're going to go to the multitrack session so click on the multitrack and then it will ask you to create a session so this is similar to you creating and say a Photoshop project so single file if you open it it got nothing it doesn't have any asset to it then you want to import your images so in this case once you have a session you need to import the audio files so basically is the same concept so I'm going to name this exercise one I really have this so I'm going to just overwrite it later on if I can exercise one and then you need to find the folder in which you're going to save this project so to make sure you remember when you save it so let's say if you want to do in the desktop you create a folder in your desktop and then just select that and it's fine and then sample rate if you're doing it for TV it should be 48 thousand if you do it in for radio it's forty one thousand in this case I'm going to match the audio file because the audio file is 44 100 so I'm just going to use 4400 bit deaf let's stick to 24 I'm going to elaborate on the sample rate and bit death ball later on but at the moment for this exercise you can follow these settings click OK and then it will bring you to a multitrack session so a multitrack session as the name goes it has multiple tracks that you can use so as you can have normally when we if let's say in the context of film we're probably going to have let's say footsteps and then we're going to have dialogue and then we're going to have probably background ambient sounds and other sound effects so we can mix multiple sound in one project so in this exercise we're going to use the multitrack to compare between one or two files so in this case we're going to compare the flat mp3 so I'm going to drag the flat mp3 to track one alright so I'm going to name this flat okay so in this flat mp3 we have individual effects Rex so this effects rag we can add equalizer or we can do any other we can use any other plugins and it will only affect affects the this track so it's individual right so next is we're going to bring in EQ one then put it on the second track and then name this EQ one so what we want to do is to compare flat and EQ one and listen to the difference so in order for us to do that we need to play individual track one by one so I can click on this solo button the solo button will basically meet all the other tracks and we can only listen to this solo track right we can solo multiple track but what we want to do is to solo one track at a time so I want to compare this compare this by toggling the two track so listen to the first track and then toggle second track [Music] and try to spot the difference so note that I'm able to switch the solo button individually like this like a toggle it will not select to solo track at one time so it's only one at a time so in your settings probably you can click solo multiple times not in multiple track so we for this exercise we don't want that to happen because it's going to be really difficult for us to to make to tell the difference later on so what you need to do is to go to the preference it's under edit in windows preference and then you go to multi track under multi track you can see here the first option is track solo you switch from non exclusive to exclusive so initially you also probably it's going to be here non-exclusive change it to exclusive so when it is exclusive if you can only solo one track at a time right so it's easier to talk about so let's go through it again listen to the original or the flat track toggle to EQ one so go back to flat alright so in my opinion it seems like the EQ the flat has more bass than each one so I need to increase the bass so that it will match the flat track so the idea is to try and use EQ to equalize to flatten to the original track so I'm going to go to my EQ one and the effects so if you don't see the effects you can go to the buttons on top right so go to effects and then choose parametric equalizer same thing that we seen before so now we're going to make adjustments so that it will match the quality of the original track so I'm adjusting EQ one remember so I need more bass but increase [Music] sorry now I'm listening to flat so I can tell different so I'm going to switch back to each you one correct Sun angle roll push yeah listen back to original [Music] [Music] almost maybe [Music] go back [Music] so roughly is almost there so I know that by listening eq1 seems lacking of base compared to the original track right so therefore I'm going to use I'm using this equalizer to adjust the frequency of the bass so that it'll sound almost the same so that's the exercise once you're done with that once you happy with your settings you want to screen capture this window right or you can just screen capture the whole thing it doesn't matter as long as I can see the settings and then you will upload it to your block and name this each one so you don't need to explain all you need to do is type in the title EQ one and put in this the image alright so once you're done with the first track you can go ahead and do for EQ two so I'm going to drag in EQ 2 and similarly I'm going to make comparison between the original track so I'm going to play original track start from here and then quickly I'm going to toggle to EQ 2 hey it's not like that's going to be weird so I'm going to just push it all the way to the beginning all right so let's do that again original eq2 original all right so it seems like the the original half has more trouble is like the key is sharper as compared to track 3 which is to eat YouTube I'm going to change this to eat you to not EQ 23 H 2 so let's listen to it again because it sounds a bit ruffled so this is so I need more trouble here in EQ 2 so I'm going to go ahead and insert the parametric equalizer right and then I'm going to listen and as I listen I'm going to increase so I'm going to listen back to the original so that I can make reference to it we are definitely missing so I'm going to increase there then make comparison [Music] alright sounds almost sounds almost there doesn't make I mean it sounds as if it's it's the same already can't really hear the difference anymore so let's say this is it this is the final settings that one again screenshot upload it to your block name 8eq - and that's it so make sure you do for until equal eq6 alright so that's it
