Effective SEO Strategies for Etsy Success

This is how I put together a killer block of SEO, that's my title and my tags, to help me blow up sales in my Etsy shop. Watch closely because this is something that helped me go from a struggling Etsy shop owner to a six-figure, print-on-a-man, full-time Etsy seller. So what is it that I'm doing that you might not be doing just yet? Your next block of SEO could be the one that opens the floodgates of cha-chings into your Etsy shop. or if you're ignoring these key concepts surrounding SEO, all of your efforts on Etsy could become a waste of time. But what makes a killer block of SEO? The best blocks of SEO, in my experience, keep these five concepts at top of mind, and I'm going to walk you through all of them. First up, we're going to talk about what exactly is SEO and where is it located in your listing so that you can best... utilize it. Etsy is based on query matching. It's a search engine. So when someone comes to the Etsy platform, they go to that little search bar at the top and they search up what they're looking for. Let's say they're putting in the search bar, funny teacher shirts. Etsy then quickly starts looking through all of the items cataloged on Etsy that have SEO, that stands for search engine optimization, And it's basically the titles and the tags, the words that we've attached to our listings. Etsy starts looking for listings that say funny and teacher and shirts. It doesn't have to be an exact match. But if it is, your listing does have a chance to move up and be found in search results a little bit higher than if it wasn't an exact match. But don't get too bogged down with this thought. because it might become pretty stressful for you to always be thinking about, oh no, what exactly is that customer most likely to type in? In some of the later concepts we're going to chat about, you'll realize why you don't have to get too concerned about this. So there's actually five places we're able to attach our phrases, our words that help Etsy understand our listings. As I mentioned, that's your title and your tags. And it's also... in your categories, your attributes, and toward the top of your item descriptions. But some of these spots are way more impactful than others. So let's chat about the two most impactful spots first, and that is your title and your tags. You get exactly 140 characters for your title. You can actually see a little bit of the title right under your listing in search results. And when someone clicks in, then we can see the entire title that you attached to your listing. The entire title is quite important and you do want to use it to the best of your ability to catch as many relevant shoppers as you can. And we'll get more into that in just a bit. But the very beginning of that title, the part that's visible to customers right under your listing is even more important than the rest of it. So you want to put your most relevant The phrase that describes your item the very, very best right up front. Then you get 13 tags, and I like to fill my tags up with two to three words each. These are a little bit more hidden in your shop than your title is as far as customers seeing them, but they're very important just the same because Etsy is using them to understand your listing and to match them in front of people during that query matching phase when the customer is coming in. and typing in something like funny teacher shirts. Now we're gonna talk about three other places where Etsy is pulling your phrases, your SEO. And the most important one is categories, but I'd say it's not as important as the title and the tags. The title and the tags are really the stars here. But there's something I wanna mention about categories that I always do. Here's the category section in our listing, and we're gonna do a shirt. So we're going to type shirt in here and we have several options that we could choose from. I'm going to go with tops and tees for a second. Notice I am going to be in five related searches. So I'm going to be in clothing. I'm going to be in gender, neutral kids clothing. I'm going to show up in tops and tees. I'm going to show up if someone's typing in words like boys and clothing or girls and clothing. And if you're doing kids items like maybe a toddler shirt or something like that, this might be a good one for you. But let's go back up and see if we can find ourselves in some more searches. So I'm gonna put sweatshirts this time. Notice here I'm actually in six related categories. So I'll show up in search results when someone puts the word clothing in, gender neutral adult clothing, hoodies and sweatshirts, sweatshirts, men's clothing, women's clothing, but this is probably not a good match if I'm doing Bella Canvas shirt. I'll show you the one I usually go with. which is this one right here. Clothing, gender neutral adult clothing, tops and tees, t-shirts. I'm in seven related categories, men's clothing, women's clothing, and another one that we're not seeing here. So this is the one that's the biggest bang for my buck. And if it's going to match your items and it's relevant, then it's great. Again, if you're doing like a kid's item, that other one specifically would make more sense. But for a lot of this, this is probably going to make a lot of sense. This one. So that is to say, when you're choosing your category, try to choose the one that is the most relevant, but also makes you eligible for the most search terms. And so the shirt one that I chose makes me eligible for seven different phrases. And if you're thinking, well, who is going to put in gender neutral, blah, blah, blah, whatever that title was. Remember, it doesn't have to be an exact match, but all of those words are now part of my SEO or words that I can show up for in search results. They help Etsy understand what my listing is about. Keep in mind that the more searches that we can show up in, the more chances we have to have that listing do well. So the more variety we can add in terms of phrases. and unique words to our listing, the better. That is, as long as they're all super duper relevant. Well, that's quick work choosing your category. The next place that Etsy's letting us give them a little information about our listing that's helping them match us up when someone is typing their query into the search bar is in the attributes section. Attributes item details that define the characteristics of your products so buyers can more easily find you. So I usually choose the color, we'll go with black here, that is in the main mock-up photo of my listing photos. I don't usually choose a secondary color. I do not usually choose a size. The sustainability section doesn't really apply to my products but it might to yours so only if one of them is relevant choose it. Most of us will probably be doing short sleeve or long sleeve if you're doing Bella canvas or the Gildan 64,000 or the comfort colors like I do. Let's drop down the rest of these attributes here for neckline. If you are doing one of the shirts I mentioned, I choose crew neck for this item for clothing style. If I have like a rainbow type of design, I might choose boho or hippie boho and hippie. Otherwise, I usually go with street wear. down toward the bottom. Next we've got occasion and with the occasion I only choose one if it's super applicable, like super relevant. So let's say I have a dad shirt. I would not choose birthday simply because I was hoping someone would buy that shirt for a dad on a birthday. I would only choose birthday if it were actually a birthday. design on that shirt. Six figure Etsy seller tip for you here. This occasion section is a great place to brainstorm some niche ideas. These are all really great niches to work in. And if Etsy went ahead and made them in the drop down menu here for us to choose from so that they can get good information about our listings, it probably means there's a really good amount of shoppers coming to the Etsy platform to shop within those niches. And hey guys, by the way, if you are looking for some extra guidance when it comes to selecting a niche, whether it be a holiday related niche, or whether it be an evergreen niche, or if you're looking for guidance on how to niche down within a niche, or listing dates for each month when you should be listing in your niches by and what date you should have your items listed by. Then you might be the type of person that's interested in the general niche calendar that I put together. It was a work of heart and I've just updated it, which was really rewarding for me. I've already emailed it to everybody that's purchased it in the past, so please don't go and purchase it again in order to get the update. Not only did I update it, but I added nearly two... our video resource that you'll also gain access to with all kinds of extra insider tips that I wanted to share with you. One of the most important things in this business is making sure you have time to do the things that are going to move the needle forward for you. So this calendar might be the thing that makes it a little easier for you so you can get to the task that matters. And that is making your designs that are based on research and getting them onto the Etsy marketplace within the time frames that they need to be listed by. Also, if you do purchase it, you will be invited to a special session where we can come together. You can ask me questions or you can give me some feedback about the calendar resource and the video so that I know what you'd like to see and the next update. Quick interruption to this video. It was supposed to go out the last week of January. So if you're watching this when the this video comes out. It's the first week of February of 2025 and you might be thinking, well, gee Shauna, I didn't even get a chance to pick up that calendar and now I can't be at that special session. So just wanted to say the videos kind of got mixed up in the order that I intended for them to go out and for that reason I am extending that date out till Valentine's Day. So you have until February 14th. I think Tucker's excited about that. You have until February 14th to pick up that calendar. and still be invited to that special session. Okay, back to the video. Next up, we've got the holiday. And again, we only wanna do this if it's applicable. So you don't wanna choose, let's say Christmas, because we're hoping someone's gonna get that dad shirt from us, but Father's Day might make sense for that dad shirt, right? There's a great many times that I do not choose a holiday because my design just doesn't go with that. And again, I don't wanna choose something like Christmas just because I'm hoping someone will pick it up as a Christmas present. I would only choose Christmas if it was actually a Christmas design. Now you might be thinking, oh, I'm just gonna grab one of those anyways. Shawna just said that the more things that we can show up for, the more eligible we are to show up in more searches, the better our listing can be. But notice I keep using the word relevant because if you aren't choosing things that are relevant to your design and your product, you will hurt your listing rather than help it. This is gonna be covered more deeply in an upcoming concept in just a sec. And last for attributes, but not least, is the graphic that we get to choose when we are choosing a clothing category. We get to tell them what kind of graphic is on it. We've got tons of options here, and I'm always able to find one that works. So- We'll go with humorous saying here. And the fifth place that Etsy tells us they are using to gain information about our listing and to help match us with potential customers is at the very top of our description. This spot doesn't seem to be as impactful. Sometimes I utilize this spot. Other times I don't. You don't want to just copy your title and paste it at the top of your description. You might make a quick sentence, but please don't spend any amount of time on this. And if you're batching designs, which is how I'm able to accomplish my listing goals for the week, I'll leave that video linked right here and down below if you want to know more about that. Then hopefully you would just use that same sentence in that whole batch of designs, that same sentence that you put at the top of your description that's packed with some terms or phrases that you think describe your item really well. The second concept we're going to touch on here while talking about... Putting together our killer block of SEO that is going to blow up sales in our Etsy shops this year is relevancy. You've heard me use the word relevant a number of times since we started chatting today. When your tags, titles, listing descriptions, Categories and attributes match a shopper's query, your listings have the potential to appear in their search results. If those keywords are an exact match for the query, your listing may be ranked higher in search results because it's seen as more relevant to the search. So, for example, if someone puts funny back to school teacher shirt in the search bar, I can still show up for them. even if I don't have that exact phrase. Maybe I have funny science teacher tea. Etsy will pull the word funny from there. And maybe I have teacher tops and shirts. Etsy's gonna pull the words teacher and shirts from that spot. And perhaps I have back to school somewhere else. Etsy's algorithm is smart enough to realize that I could still be a great match for that shopper. But if I'm an exact match, I'll be seen as a bit more relevant. And I might. be able to pull up in search results a little bit higher, which just means that as that person is scrolling, they would see my item a little bit sooner, maybe. So don't get too caught up in thinking too much about this. SEO, putting your title and your tags together, should be fast. It's not what should be taking you the most time. We'll get to that in just a second. And while we're on the topic of relevancy, I want you to remember that you should only be putting phrases that describe your item really well. You can use some broad phrases like teacher shirts, and you can use some more specific phrases like perhaps the exact phrase that is on the shirt. Don't forget to check uspto.gov to make sure that that phrase isn't trademarked. My SEO is always comprised of both of these parts. I remember when I first started, I was a little afraid to use teacher shirts because I thought, well, that's so broad. I won't be able to rank for that. But as I listed in that big niche regularly, and one of the tricks is to make sure you're niching down with any broad niche that you're in. Most of your niches will be broad. You just have to make sure that you are niching down within them. So the key is here to niche down within them. And then your SEO, some of it's going to be very targeted, very specific to that sub-niche. And some of it should be more broad so that you're ranking for the niche in general. And as you continue to feed the algorithm with these listings, you will eventually start ranking for that bigger term like teacher shirts. And the last thing I want you to keep in mind in terms of relevancy is that this is how your listing is going to actually start getting put in front of more people. If you're showing up in relevant searches, people that would be a really good match for your item, they're more likely to... actually engage with your product. That's good because that's how you'll keep getting seen. However, if you're popping up in front of people and they keep scrolling right by you, Etsy will first kind of understand that, well, this search term isn't relevant to this listing. You'll stop being seen for that search term anyways. So it's just a waste of space that you could have used more effectively. But then it could also lead to Etsy understanding or Etsy's algorithm understanding that, oh, people don't really like this. So we're not going to show it anymore. We're going to show other things when really, maybe your item was a nice item that people would want to buy, but it's showing up in the wrong searches. And so people are not engaging with it. And then Etsy's like, oh, we don't want to show it anymore. Let's cover the third key concept that you need to know if you're going to put a killer block of SEO together. And that is what does a killer block of SEO even look like? And how do I put mine together? First of all, I always start with my block of SEO. I know, it's tempting. Let me know down in the comments if you ever find yourself creating a design in one niche and then having a great idea in another niche, creating a design over there, and then, ooh, you got an idea over here in another niche, so you create that design. And then when you're done with your designs for the day, you've got maybe three designs all in different niches, and now you have to sit down and go find blocks of SEO that fit those. designs? If so, go down in the comments and say, oh no, we don't want to do it that way, or at least that's not how I do it. I like to come up with my block of SEO, my title, and my tags first. Your title is 140 characters and you've got 13 tags. I like to put two to three words in each of my tags. I always do this part first. I think of it as the main idea of my sentence. And then I go do a batch of designs that go with this block of SEO or this block of title and tags that I just created. This is much more time efficient because now I'm getting 10 to 15 designs which turn into 10 to 15 listings that go with that block of SEO. And I have intention when I sit down to design now. I am specifically looking at this specific niche and doing research just for that niche and maybe even just for a specific phrase in that niche. I'm gonna give it all kinds of different looks, different aesthetics that I see trending on the market, but we're not gonna get into that in this video. I'll leave that linked up here and down below. So what this looks like for me, the very first thing that I do when I sit down to get my SEO together, I like to go find listings that are performing well so I can cherry pick specific words and phrases that are going to go well with my designs that I want to create. Of course, I'm assuming that we've already picked a niche. You can use that calendar resource that I mentioned earlier. Again, I do have it linked down below to pick your niche if you need help with that. You can use the evergreen list in the back of it or the professions list in the back of it to help you niche down within the niche that you're working with. Now we head right over to Etsy and we're going to look for five to seven listings. And these are the rules that I follow when I'm looking for those five to seven listings. I'm looking for listings that are best sellers. I am looking for listings that have 20 in the cart right now. So if they're a best seller, but they don't currently have 20 in the cart, and I'll flash up on the screen right here so you know where I'm looking for these clues. 20 in the cart right now means that people are... actually searching and purchasing from it right now. So that title and that tags for that listing must be working right now. I am looking to collect these five to seven listings from different shops. I prefer to have no repeat listings from the same shop. There's two reasons for that. One, if that shop has been plugging along and the main reason for that is perhaps that shop is running ads on Facebook to their listings or they're doing a Pinterest strategy. They're doing some kind of outside strategy that's helping their listings do well. I don't want to collect accidentally all of the listings that I'm looking at for my SEO with perhaps some other alternative thing happening. So my odds are better if I just collect these listings from different shops. I also love to find at least one of these listings from a smaller shop and I use the reviews often to help me. identify this. If that shop only has three or four reviews, but they have a bestseller in this niche, well then my gosh, they must have really found a great block of SEO to help them get discovered if it's working for this newer shop. However, don't kill yourself looking for the one that I just gave as an example, like three or four. Sometimes I can't find that. And maybe the smallest one I can find is one with 130 or 250, whatever it is. But I do attempt to find one from a smaller shop. And lastly, I find that I really need to find five to seven of these listings that that's really what I need to collect in order for me to put my block of SEO, my title and my tags together with ease. So I've done the heavy lifting here for us and for the sake of time, we're going to choose to do a Christian shirt. We're specifically going to do a batch of designs that go with this phrase. She is worthy, Proverbs. 31. I have already collected the five to seven bits of SEO for us, but if you really wanted to watch me go through this process more slowly and have you really do it with me, I will leave another SEO video that I made linked right here and I'll also leave it linked down below in case you'd like to give that a watch when you're done with this video. I'm going to put some of the blocks of SEO up on screen that I used to create. my SEO. So mine might wind up looking something like, she is worthy bow shirt, women's Christian Bible t-shirts, cute scripture coquette t-shirt with a dash this time, girly faith gift for her, trendy Christian outfit. I pulled most of these phrases or words from different places in these other listings. All listings that are doing really well and getting found on Etsy. Please note that I used different product words. I didn't use the word shirt over and over again. Now, I imagine the word shirt is probably the one that is primarily used the most by Etsy shoppers, is what I would guess. But if we repeat it over and over again, remember, we don't have to have exact matches for our shoppers. But we do want to show up in as many relevant searches as we can. So I want to show up when someone's putting shirt, but I also want to show up when someone's putting t-shirt. This way I can show up in searches for all of these product words. And then let's take a look at our tags. My tags wound up being... Proverbs 31, Jesus lover, Christian shirt, Bible verse tee, girly ribbon t-shirt, and I wrote blank bow here because I plan on using different color schemes, but I will probably have a lot of my listings with a bow in them. So if I'm using a pink bow, I'll say pink bow or white bow, whatever it is that I decide to use. Just to be clear, I won't be using a design and just swapping out the bow with a different color. They will be different designs in this batch of lists. of designs that go with this killer block of SEO. Inspirational shirt, motivational tee, religious gift, Christian tops, preppy bow tee, church shirts, and perhaps I'm just going to leave one here kind of open to me, something specific to that design, something maybe unique or special. Perhaps I have a blue toile pattern in it, which is very trendy on Etsy at the moment. Perhaps I have a brush stroke pattern in it or some other types of trendy. thing happening, which each of my designs will probably have some different trendy thing happening in them. And I could use this tag to make this listing a bit unique by pointing out that. When I'm collecting my tags, I continue to just use those listing titles. You can also go to the bottom of a listing and you'll find related searches, which will give you additional ideas. and you could pick out other relevant phrases to use in your tags from that list down there. And I also like to use a paid tool called Everbee. There's also a free version, but you can actually go into a listing and see what tags they're using. So each of those listings that I pulled for us, I could go in and see the exact tags that each of them were using if I were to go use my Everbee Chrome extension. I'm making an effort not to be repetitive. but sometimes I wind up repeating. My goal is to kind of get this done in like 15 minutes or less. So I'm just looking for it to be good enough. We'll loop back and you'll understand why it only needs to be good enough in just a minute. The fourth concept that we need to cover when we're talking about creating a killer block of SEO for your Etsy listings is actually being efficient and spending your time on the right types of tasks. Remember I said I'm going to... batch this. So first I do my block of SEO. I do my title and my tags like I just showed you. Now I'm going to go sit down and create 10 to 15 designs to go with this block of SEO. I'm going to flash a couple on the screen up here so you know what types of designs I would wind up making. You're going to see that each of them will be quite different from the last. I'm not looking to put the same design up in my shop. 15 times with just swapping out the color of the bow on each of them. I'm looking for different layouts. I'm looking for different trends to include in these designs. And so let's go through a couple of examples and how I might just tweak my SEO just a little bit so I can efficiently get out 10 to 15 designs. Sometimes I'll use the same exact block of SEO more than once, and other times I'll tweak it just a little bit like this. And this is how I can very efficiently get two or three batches of designs out every week, which might wind up being 20, 30, or even maybe 45 unique designs in my shop in just two or three niches for the week. So take a look at this listing here. I made it say she is worthy pink bow shirt. I changed this one slightly here, and now I said she is worthy leopard bow. shirt at the end I made a little change because I didn't have enough characters to make it say trendy Christian T Instead of outfit this one here I changed again a bit and to go with this design my SEO might look something like she is worthy cross Shirt since I no longer have a bow. I have a cross Women's Christian blue twall because this pattern is blue twall and it's quite trendy on Etsy and again this one says trendy Christian tea at the end since I needed more characters. The most important thing that we can do in our Etsy shops to move the needle forward and to get sales and to grow our shops to scale our shops is to do the thing that is actually going to impact it the most which is to list designs that are based on research that bring in trending elements and to get enough of those out there consistently. And so it's not always that we need to find the fastest way to do a task. It's that we need to spend time doing the most important tasks. And so here we've gotten a quick way of putting our SEO together. That is, if you don't overthink it too much and don't put too much pressure on yourself to get the perfect block of SEO, because the truth is your SEO just needs to be good enough. Etsy's really good at testing you out and getting you in front of the right people so they can get items sold. So let's just get that block of SEO together and then let's efficiently get those 10 to 15 designs out. Additionally, this is so effective because you shouldn't be doing one design here and then going to another niche and doing a design and then going to another niche and doing a design. We need to feed the algorithm so that Etsy understands that, oh, the shop makes items for this niche and you don't have to stick with one niche. I don't do that. I have a general shop, but I do have certain niches that I feed all the time. And those are the ones that make me the most money. And that's because I've gotten good at those niches over time because I keep revisiting them. I keep putting a batch of those listings out. So I'm better at market research with those specific niches because I research them so often. But then I also have a chance to kind of get a fire going in my shop in that niche. And when we double down on things, Etsy understands that, oh, this person's been selling teacher shirts. This shop sells items that say teacher shirt in them. Ooh, we're going to put more of their listings out that say teacher shirt. You also get more repeat customers like this because you keep feeding more items to the algorithm that that customer is likely to want to come back and get. And one of the ways that this SEO works is that everyone's first page of search results is not the same. Etsy knows your search history. So if you've purchased a shirt from someone in the past, if you type something into Etsy's search bar. that matches that shop again in the future, that shop is more likely to get in front of your eyeballs and search results than another shop that you haven't purchased from before or haven't engaged with yet. And so when you do batches of designs and you keep revisiting that niche and you do another batch of designs for that niche, you're getting people engaging with at least a certain percentage of those designs that you're putting out. And then those individuals are likely to see your shop popping up in their search results again and again. And you become a shop and little by little, you collect people where you're a first page ranker for them. Okay, so all of the concepts we have covered so far are really important. But this last one is going to be the most important. Now, before I get to this last one, if you are enjoying this content, it's like 7.30 at night. I've been at it all day. If you could just go down and... Boop the like button for me so I know that you actually appreciated this video and that I made the right decision by diving so deeply into this topic with you today. And if you don't want to miss future videos from me, hi, I'm Simply Shawna. Thanks for sticking around with me. Then go ahead and give that subscribe button a little hug so I start showing up in your search results more often or just more information about SEO starts showing up for you more often. So this next SEO concept that you need to know so that you can have killer blocks of SEO in your Etsy shop is that when something isn't selling, it's probably because of the design, not so much the SEO. The first thing we want to blame is the SEO. Oh, I don't think I'm being seen. I don't think I'm being seen. That's why I'm not making any sales. Firstly, let me just point out that on your listings page, go over to the right top corner. There's a little stats toggle. Make sure it's toggled on. This is going to give you lots of information about your listings. Now, if you've had that toggled on, you might be looking at your stats and saying, well, I don't have any visits on these. A visit on that page means someone actually clicked into your listing, but you're probably showing up in search results. That information isn't there on that page for you. You see, when a new listing is created, it gets a small temporary boost in search results so that... And Etsy search can learn more about how buyers interact with it to determine the listing's engagement rate. So what is engagement rate? Engagement rate on Etsy is a calculation that measures how many people interacted with a listing by clicking into it, by liking it, by purchasing it, compared to the total number of people who saw the listing and maybe just kept scrolling right by it. If people engage with your listing, it can earn its way. up the totem pole and hopefully get itself a spot on the first page of search results. So SEO, your title and your tags, makes you eligible to show up in search results, but it does not make your listing rank anywhere. It is people actually clicking on your listing and interacting with it that will make it rank. And the most important thing to get someone to click into your listing is your design. You have to find out whether it's on trend and if it also adds value to the market. I go into shops all the time and I see on trend designs, but that's because they look like everybody else's designs. So sure, they're on trend. It's what's selling, but they look just like what everyone else is doing. So the trick is to have them be on trend, but they... also have to add value to the market. And you might be wondering, well, geez, how do I do that? Oh my gosh, it's so much fun. I'll leave a whole playlist down below that you could check out if you want to see how I'm able to do that. Actually, by the way, guys, if that does sound like something that you're like, man, I really need help creating designs that are both on trend and add value to the market, then you might be the type of person that would be really interested in the Simply Learn and Earn Academy, which is my online membership. I'll leave a link to it down below. Everyone's favorite day in the membership is the trend report day because we do a monthly trend report where I let you know all the trends that I'm noticing in the market that are popping up. And so this is one way that you can be on trend. You can add them into niches that they aren't already being used in. And since I'm finding them right away, that's not so hard to do. But personally, my favorite part of the membership in our classroom, you'll find a section that's set up as I do, you do, we do. Each of the activities in there is two parts. I find the market research. I point it out to you. You go and you make your designs and then you come back and I show you how I implemented it and a conversation going in the community about it.
