we're going to work on the upper cabinets and we have basically four areas where we could put upper cabinets and then possibly something here above the refrigerator i'm going to zoom in here and give myself some guides so i'll use the tape measure and pull up 18 inches and we may not go all the way to the ceiling because nine feet is rather high for a cabinet let's go up four feet and we'll leave some space at the top uh that will probably be filled in by crown molding or filler or soffit piece and let's drag a guide from the edge here and over to here and right now i'm not inside of a group and i may want to put this inside the kitchen group so first let me click out of the group here first let's simply drag a rectangle based on the new guides double-click and this time we will right click and choose make component and we'll give it a name and i'll call it upper cabinet one we may end up with more and then since i want it inside of the kitchen group i'm going to go ahead and go to the make sure it's still selected and choose edit cut double click into the group then choose edit paste in place now that rectangle is here inside of the group so while i'm in here i'm actually going to place that same rectangle in three other places here so i may need another guide so let's go ahead and double click on that edge and now i can select with the move tool that rectangle tap the control key and find that intersection and this time i should be able to align it with this this intersection here but i also have to rotate it making sure that component is selected once again using the move tool tap control and i'm going to set it down right here in the corner and then i'm going to actually rotate it and rotating is one of the tricky things in sketchup i need to rotate it on from the edge up here so hovering over those little plus signs i can see the red access highlighted left click let go drag your mouse around until it hits the green axes and then left click again to set it down and now i just need to grab that bottom corner and come into the red direction and i'm gonna align it again with the guide point there and now i'll zoom out and this one's going to end up being a little bit shorter because the area on this side is actually three foot cabinets but i may want to do something around the refrigerator a filler or surround so this is going to work out just fine let's put one last guide in tape tool double clicking on this edge to create a guide and one more time let's copy from this bottom corner tap the ctrl key stay on the green axes and come over until it intersects with the guide so now i've got all four of those hopefully that one is pulled over enough i'm actually going to select it and move it over slightly and then just move it back into place okay let's go in tapping on the kitchen tab view once again edit pull down menu delete guides and click out of the group and do that one more time to get all of the guidelines i ended up making outside of the group okay so let's go in and work on these upper cabinets so double click back into that group and using the push pull tool i've got a double click in to actually edit this group and right now there's a there's a lot happening um i think i'm okay to work like this so i'll go ahead and grab the face and i'm gonna pull it out and you can see because this one is a component not a group as i change one all of the others change as well so i'm going to pull that out to 14 inches a lot of standard upper cabinets are 12 inches deep and in the few kitchen projects that i've actually done i have found that not to be deep enough for an average plate so that's something to consider when you're designing a kitchen and then we'll keep the design of this pretty simple and let's go ahead and grab the line tool and from the midpoint we'll go ahead and drag to the midpoint below using the offset tool we'll go ahead and offset three inches now i can't remember if we did two or three on the base cabinets let's try two and see if that makes a difference i think we did do two so on this one as well and then push pull to just move that back 0.5 and double click on the adjacent one so now we've got all four of those upper cabinets done and complete it's a pretty tall door so we may have wanted to split that up but for right now i'm just going to leave it and once we get the appliances set in we can work with the space above the refrigerator so click outside of the group both of them and save your file
