Understanding Blood Flow

Division of the Heart

  • Right Side:
    • Mission: Take unoxygenated blood to the lungs for oxygenation
    • Structures:
      1. Right Atrium
      2. Tricuspid Valve
      3. Right Ventricle
      4. Pulmonic Valve
      5. Pulmonary Artery
      6. Lungs
  • Left Side:
    • Mission: Distribute oxygenated blood throughout the body
    • Structures:
      1. Left Atrium
      2. Bicuspid (Mitral) Valve
      3. Left Ventricle
      4. Aortic Valve
      5. Aorta
      6. Body

Blood Flow Process

  • Right Side of the Heart:

    1. Blood drains from the superior and inferior vena cava into the right atrium.
    2. Passes through the tricuspid valve into the right ventricle.
    3. Right ventricle pumps it through the pulmonic valve into the pulmonary artery.
    4. Blood travels to the lungs for oxygenation.
  • Lungs Oxygenation Process:

    • Gas exchange occurs in alveoli sacs:
      • Oxygen binds to red blood cells.
      • Carbon dioxide is expelled.
  • Left Side of the Heart:

    1. Oxygenated blood enters the left atrium via the pulmonary vein.
    2. Flows through the bicuspid (mitral) valve into the left ventricle.
    3. Left ventricle pumps it through the aortic valve into the aorta.
    4. Blood is distributed to organs and tissues.

Memorization Tips

  • Valve Mnemonic: "Try before you buy"
    • Tricuspid (Right) before Bicuspid/Mitral (Left)
