A Day in the Life of Samuel Bosch (MIT PhD Candidate)

What's going on everyone? My name is Samuel Bosch, I'm a PhD candidate at MIT and this is a day in my life. Enjoy! In order to be as productive as possible, I get up at 5:00am every day. Okay, so that was a complete lie. Obviously, I don't get up at 5:00am, I get up at 8:00am, like a normal person. And also I usually don't have a camera filming me To wake myself up, I start the day with a few push-ups And as a man of religion, I pray to my lord and savior every morning Thank you Arnold Before going to MIT, I try to get some work done at home, while eating breakfast I also check my instagram for any new messages from you guys (@samuel.bosch) And just before heading out i have to make the most difficult decision of the day: which polo shirt should I wear? So many options! So I just got out of the house, and it's raining I live next to Harvard University, so now I have a short bike ride, along the Charles River, to get to MIT It's not that bad, I mean, it gives you kind of a real Cambridge experience Here we have John Harvard The funny thing about his foot is, when we get close you can see, it's golden So all the Harvard students always pee on that So here we are at Winthrop House, it's one of the beautiful old dorms at Harvard University And I'm just passing through it, so i can get to the Charles River Okay, I really had enough of the rain already It was fun for the first 5 minutes or so – now I'm not enjoying it anymore so much Hello sir, how are you doing? Do you have a moment to talk about Jesus, your Lord and Savior? Don't run from the truth sir! Sir! Please stay here! I believe I can fly! I believe I can touch the sky! I believe I can fly! i just arrived at the famous Harvard bridge, and there's the Boston skyline Ironically the Harvard bridge is actually the bridge that connects Boston to MIT But, I guess there was no MIT when they named it Harvard bridge Here we are at the famous MIT! Okay this was without doubt the longest bike ride I ever had to MIT Normally takes for like 10 minutes I guess I just stopped too many times to talk to geese and sing Morning Grecia! Wait! Can you let us know... You're already filmed ahahaha I still need to do my hair You need to do your hair? Yeah! Okay everyone, Grecia is gonna do her hair. OMG! Samuel!!! Good morning Lara! Good morning Bobak! So I feel like it took me just 5 seconds to already piss-off everyone! So I was running my simulations today – seems to have messed up something in the server And I tried to restart it remotely, but for some reason it won't come back to life again So now I actually have to physically walk over there and try to restart it in the server room Warning! Door evil! So guys this basement is just creeping me out We are like 2 levels below ground Legends say that many many years ago an undergraduate student got lost in these corridors in the basement And he was never found I don't actually know where the server room is – I'm kind of lost So I was in here for maybe 2 minutes and my ears are almost bleeding It was so loud in there it's crazy! Anyways, I managed to restart the computer. Let's see! Should be fine! Let's go back up! I started running some simulations, it will actually take for 2 hours I mean, normally, I should be coding something else in that time, but instead I'm going to get some fresh air My office is just up there, and here is the beautiful MIT dome Here we have THE ugliest building in all of MIT It's actually quite famous, because a few years ago a group of students played Tetris on the windows In case you're wondering why I'm wearing these funny glasses, they're actually cameras, so in case I want to film something real quick, I can just push a button and record I'm going to show people our beautiful plants that we have in the office That was dropped on the floor, but successfully saved And these ones, we're gonna grow them – so they can grow all over the office Steroids. Steroids for plants! I stole this coffee jug from the kitchen – Oh actually sorry I borrowed! So basically I've been knitting since I was a child But during the pandemic I made a knitting Instagram account And it's made me more excited about the hobby Can you give a sales pitch why guys should start knitting? Why guys should start knitting? I find it kind of therapeutic. I often knit before bed I think it's better than looking at your phone before bed You know, when you're doing a repetitive task, it helps clear your mind and relax you You also then like have this appreciation for the thing that you made and want to keep it Sascha! Are you okay with being on camera? Too late, sorry, I already put the camera in your face! Sure! So Sascha is a new student here from ETH Zürich It's a good pronunciation! That's my attempt to imitate the Swiss pronunciation – it's probably very bad So what are you working on? On quantum algorithms for algebraic topology Oh wow, that's that's very buzzwordy! I feel like all of our research is so buzzwordy! Like quantum machine learning That's true! That's why it gets funded! Oh yeah! Then, I quickly pre-order my lunch and try to get some more reading done A little productivity tip for you: we all got ourselves these quite inexpensive height-adjustable desks, so we don't have to sit all day Lara and I assembled them ourselves a few months ago Okay, time to pick up my lunch I eat the exact same high protein food every single day An entire chicken with potatoes and salad Arnold would be so proud of me Lara, I got your favorite zazuki sauce You texted me just at the right time I can make an unboxing video You know like they have it on the internet, when they open a new phone So this is a chicken – and I'm gonna eat it! We're heading to the class! Yeah, so the class is 2.S372 and it "Designed and Analysis of Quantum Algorithms" The nice thing is we get snacks halfway through Yeah, because it's such a long class – it's a 3 hour long class Today we were talking about so-called "quantum magic states" Sounds like something out of a Harry Potter movie, but it's real quantum mechanics At some point I get lost in all the equations, so Grecia and I started matching our pen colors to our fingernails Food, food, food, food! What do we have today? So yeah, we just came out of the class. It lasted for three hours I think it was quite interesting. What you guys think? Yeah, it was quite interesting Although after 3 hours, I just loose focus At the end, I was just tired What's up guys, so I got some more research done, and now my girlfriend Melissa is here! Hey guys! We'll be working a bit more on the YouTube channel We're gonna hop over to the library, we're gonna work a bit on the script This is like the typical spot where people take touristy pictures And every time we're here, people always ask me to take their picture, because they think I'm a professional photographer But really, I'm just doing the YouTube stuff We're gonna quickly go to the Charles River, to watch some of the sailing boats Word pronunciations with Melissa in English! Albert Einstein Einstein! Tomato Tomato Potato I'm not gonna say potato! Really? That sounds pretentious Louis Vuitton. Louis Vuitton is correct Ohhh really? First American who said it correctly! We have to get all the way up there Where do we climb? It's kind of embarrassing it took me almost a year to figure out how to get up there I didn't actually know that there was anything under the dome And I tried to walk up there, and completely got lost Next up we made a quick stop at the so-called "Banana Lounge" It's a place where mostly undergrads study, and they have an unlimited free banana supply for everyone at MIT Okay, so my idea is we can write about the QSVT paper Quantum Singular Value Transformation Yeah, this is like mechanical engineering – No comment! We're better than that! At least my major actually produces things That's true! This is a house And then I integrate this And I do magical quantum stuff And this is how we're going to solve the PSET You're a genius! I really don't see you doing anything? I am giving moral support here My contribution... Your contribution! For the 500th time Melissa's getting lost Now she realizes she's walking the wrong direction Melissa? Stop it! So, now we are entering the MIT Innovation Headquarters This is where all the startups at MIT happen Including this YouTube channel There's an event happening up there Otherwise I would show you directly where we do all the filming Okay, so we still have to reshoot some scene for the video about "how to get into MIT" If you haven't already watched it, you can have a look at it! Yeah, so let's get started! All right so we are done with filming for today and now we're going to my favorite place on earth! The gym at MIT Are you joining? Yeah man let's go! So we're going to do a 2-hour workout 2 hours? Let's do 3! 3-hours? At least 3, come on Samuel! Until midnight! You're gonna meet all my gym bros there Come on! 2 more! Just for the record, that's our warmup weight! Okay, so it's just after 11:00pm, and I'm on my way home So I fit to this GoPro on my bicycle again, so I can film the way home All right guys, so I just got home – it's been a very fun but long day It's almost midnight here! The workout was great! And now it's time for my post-workout snack This is going to be my famous 12-poached egg à la Samuel It wouldn't exactly win a Michelin star for the presentation But hey – proteins! So I'm done with my food – I have to be really quiet because, my flatmates are already sleeping But yeah, in case you haven't noticed – I haven't really spoken about my research So, if you're interested in what I actually do for my PhD, you can click over here If you want to get admitted to MIT as a Bachelor or Master's student you can click over here Or if you want to do your PhD at MIT, like I am, click over here (coming soon) Thank you guys so much for watching – please consider subscribing to my channel if you haven't already I'll see you next time! Bye!
