CNA Procedure: Emptying a Urinary Drainage Bag

Introduction

  • Ensuring patient privacy and hygiene by closing the curtain and washing hands.

Supplies Needed

  • Barrier (to place under the drainage bag)
  • Gloves
  • Triangular graduate container

Preparation and Inspection

  • Coil catheter tubing on the bed.
  • Ensure tubing isn’t kinked or hanging near the floor.
  • Confirm catheter is in the correct position.

Procedure

  1. Opening the Port

    • Remove port from protective sleeve.
    • Slide valve to open the port.
    • Position port over the graduated container and tilt the bag to drain.
    • Avoid touching the port to any surface.
  2. After Drainage

    • Slide port back to close.
    • Insert port back into protective sleeve.
    • Ensure bag is hanging on a non-moveable part of the bed and not touching the floor.
  3. Transporting the Container

    • Fold chucks over the graduated container for safe transport.
    • Move container to the patient’s bathroom.
  4. Measuring and Documenting Output

    • Place container on a barrier on a flat surface.
    • Measure at eye level, rounding to the nearest marking.
    • Document urine amount (e.g., 425 mL/CCs).
  5. Disposal and Cleaning

    • Empty contents into the toilet.
    • Rinse graduate container and dispose of rinse water in the toilet.
    • Dry container with paper towel (inside and outside).
    • Store container in the bottom drawer using a paper towel to handle it.
    • Dispose of used paper towels and gloves.

Final Steps

  • Ask the patient if they need anything else (e.g., a magazine).
  • Ensure the patient has their call light.
  • Open curtain and wash hands.
  • Document the procedure including time, type, and amount of output, along with initials.
  • Review and correct any steps if necessary.
  • Inform evaluator that the skill is completed.
