Basic Phonological Analysis

Overview

  • Aim: Guide through the process of performing basic phonological analysis.
  • Importance: Helps distinguish between phonemes and allophones and understand sound relationships within a language.
  • Prerequisite: Watch videos on 'Phonemes and Allophones' and 'Phonetics' series for foundational knowledge.

Key Concepts

Minimal Pairs

  • Definition: Two forms in a language that are identical except for one sound.
  • Examples:
    • English:
      • Heat vs Meat: [h] vs [m] (initial consonant)
      • Heat vs Hut: [i:] vs [ÊŒ] (vowel sound)
      • Heat vs Heal: [t] vs [l] (final consonant)

Steps in Phonological Analysis

  1. Identify Minimal Pairs: Determine if the data set contains minimal pairs with the sounds in question.
    • If yes: Sounds are different phonemes.
    • If no: Sounds must be allophones of the same phoneme.
  2. Determine Phonological Environment: Identify where each allophone occurs in the language.
    • Environment examples: Beginning/end of a word, between vowels, after certain consonants.

Practice Problems

Sindhi Language

  • Task: Identify minimal triplet for unaspirated [p], aspirated [pʰ], and [b].
  • Solution:
    • Minimal Triplet: [É™nu] (A), [pʰənu] (F), [bÉ™nu] (J).
    • Conclusion: [p], [pʰ], and [b] are different phonemes.

Standard Italian

  • Task: Identify relationship between [n] and [Å‹].
  • Solution:
    • No minimal pairs found - must be allophones of the same phoneme.
    • [Å‹] occurs before velar stops [k], [g]; [n] occurs elsewhere.
    • Rule: /n/ -> [Å‹] / __ [velar], /n/ -> [n] elsewhere.__

Standard Spanish

  • Task: Identify relationship between [d] and [ð].
  • Solution:
    • No minimal pairs found - must be allophones of the same phoneme.
    • [ð] occurs between vowels.
    • Rule: /d/ -> [ð] / V__V, /d/ -> [d] elsewhere.__

Biblical Hebrew

  • Task: Identify relationship between [p] and [pʰ].
  • Solution:
    • No minimal pairs found - must be allophones of the same phoneme.
    • [p] occurs after vowels, [pʰ] before vowels.
    • Rule: /p/ -> [pʰ] / V, /p/ -> [p] / V.

Conclusion

  • Two-step analysis process: Identify minimal pairs, determine phonological environment for each allophone.
  • Practice makes the process easier; look for more practice problems online.
