Introduction

  • Presenter: Mike from Surgtech Academy
  • Reminder: Subscribe for latest updates
  • Topic: Draping a patient in supine or prone position
  • Note: Each surgeon may have different methods of draping

Key Concepts in Draping

  • Surgeon First: Prioritize the surgeon's needs
  • Create a Cuff: Essential part of the draping process
  • Never Move Down or Up: Maintain position to avoid contamination

Draping in Supine Position

  • Demonstration: Using Charlie the Mannequin as patient and Emma as surgeon
  • Medium Sheets/Half Sheets:
    • Bring medium sheet, pass half to surgeon
    • Drape the inferior patient, extend, make a cuff, and drop
    • Unfold the second sheet, extend, make a cuff, and place superiorly
    • Covers most of the patient and reduces contamination risk

Towels Preparation

  • Preparation: Prepare all towels ahead of time
  • Placement Sequence:
    • First towel on surgeon's side
    • Next, place towels superiorly (top), inferiorly (bottom), and finally on own side
    • Maintain a distance of 12 to 18 inches from the field to avoid contamination

Final Draping: Laparotomy Drape

  • Instructions on Drape: Manufacturers provide guidance
  • Positioning:
    • Place at incision site, unfold, surgeon and assistant grab sides
    • Cuff hands, extend, unfold completely
    • Surgeon grabs white paper to finalize draping

Conclusion

  • Outcome: Complete and perfect patient draping for both supine and prone positions
  • Closing Remarks: Encouragement to excel in the O.R.
