NAB Show Highlights and Camera Releases

what's up everybody in today's video I want to talk to you about the most surprising thing that I saw at the NAB show this week in Las Vegas it was in the Canon booth we've also got some pricing news from Canon we've also got some juicy lens details from Sigma Canon Fuji Nikon has a new camera and we're hearing rumblings about the new bodies that are going to be coming out of Canon this year the R seven and the R six updates so let's jump in and talk about it all right so the hotly anticipated NAB show was this week here in Las Vegas i was there i live in Las Vegas so it makes it relatively easy to get down there although parking is a pain now the NAB show is primarily broadcastbased right but I want to show you a clip real quick of the thing that I thought was the most surprising you know obviously this is a very broadcaster focused show C80s and C400s and PTZ lenses and this all mostly focused on live broadcast sporting events concerts right they've got a live concert going back here this guy has been kicking this ball for 3 days i did see something though that I wanted to I just point out real quick right here i don't know if you noticed an R5C it's hidden behind a lot of production gear they're showing what you can do the old lowly R5C and uh looks like they've got that new 24 to 105 F2.8 Z lens attached to it so very nice to see some of the uh more budget friendly slightly older models uh in the Canon lineup still still getting a little bit of respect here at NAB now the big news really from that booth from Canon in general this week at NAB is the Digis Super these these giant lenses that you see on camera systems at like baseball games so they had those on demo they also had their switcher system on demo their kind of live orchestration system lots of ways to kind of automatically control your camera systems if you're in kind of a studio environment that was really that was the big thing uh at the Canon booth this year at NAB which I thought was kind of boring but I went I checked in with Canon got some of my gear serviced while I was there but interestingly enough I actually felt like Canon was more present at the WPPI show this year which I also attended and I'll be releasing some videos related specifically to those shows this year and my experience and some of the things that I saw so that'll be a different video down the road so let's move on to our next topic so our next topic today we're talking about lenses so first things first we're going to start with Sigma there is some rumor that Sigma is going to be developing a 200mm f1.8 8 sports lens specifically for Sony E and Leica Lmounts if you're familiar with the Canon uh EF200 mil F28L it's been called the Eye of Sauron because it has a giant front element you know how big a deal it would be if Sigma came out with this lens especially for the E and Lmount systems no expectation for an RF version right we're still kind of in that limbo mode waiting for potentially things to open up on the RF full-frame side i've done videos on that in the past i'll link to those but this is yet another example where a third party being in the mix would really be helpful that doesn't mean that Canon isn't doing interesting things on the lens side of things we've got a potential patent that shows an RFS 14 to 30 mil F4 to 63 STM PZ lens and while this isn't a complete departure from some of the existing models that we have it looks like they're making some improvements on edge sharpness while also keeping the body compact and small obviously an RFS lens it's going to be on smaller bodies the assumption is that it would be lightweight great for traveling especially if you want an ultra wide zoom next some disappointing news for US-based Canon users uh I'm sure you're all already tired about hearing about tariffs uh but as a result of US tariffs uh Canon has cancelled their pricing plans they were going to be doing some price drops for the R seven and the R10 those have been cancelled although take everything I say with a grain of salt considering the fact that the tariff conversation seems to be kind of evolving on a minute-by-minute basis so things could change at any second initially these price drops were set for May but because of the tariffs that were placed on Japanese goods at 24% which have now been delayed for 90 days Canon announced that they were going to cancel that strategy but we don't we don't really know what's going to happen now additionally Canon's instant rebate program might go away and the tariff might also impact refurbished products and honestly kind of bring them up to what we traditionally see at normal pricing 25% is about what we normally see on the discounts for refurb models from Canon now obviously these changes are limited to the US market uk and EU pricing should remain pretty much the same so if you're a global Canon customer uh then now's the time to buy I guess and if you're a US customer and you haven't seen prices go up yet you may also want to uh you may also want to invest now next up we've got just a couple updates on the Canon R5 there's a firmware update that has come out it's 1.0.3 so this isn't like a big update but it does improve the overheating management system and it's also supposed to address some issues with autofocusing at certain zoom ranges i've not experienced this issue i'd be curious down in the comments if you have i shot with the R52 for like an entire week uh and I didn't have any issues at pretty much everything between 14 and 200 so it's a small update but obviously always good to see Canon continuously iterating on their products and fixing bugs quickly but more exciting and interestingly uh is that right Small Rig uh which is an accessory company they make all sorts of stuff for cameras you probably know them as the company that make cages that go around your camera so if you're a cinematographer or a videographer or a photographer like me who I actually I like having a a small cage on my R5 it kind of acts as an L bracket but it also gives me the ability to just attach stuff if I need to for behind the scenes work and that kind of thing but if you've ever done that you've probably seen Small Rig they also make lights and now I guess they're making a microphone they're a cool company and they've come out with an accessory that is about 60 bucks uh we've seen stuff like this before but this one actually seems really polished and put together and this is effectively a cooling system for the R5 and the R5 Mark II so for the R5 Mark II you can get the cooling grip and the R52 does have the additional kind of venting system that helps reduce the amount of overheating you can experience uh on that camera but it's not zero right it still does potentially overheat especially if you're like me shooting outdoors potentially in the sun in the heat and maybe you're just not looking to drop 400 bucks on a cooling grip so Small Egg claims that for $60 it will double your 4K 30 video recording duration and as a bonus it's also potentially compatible with some of the Sony setups so as we get into the spring and the summertime if you're shooting weddings outdoors events things like that and you know that you need to set up the R5 Mark II with its limitless run time but heat is going to be your number one potential pinch point uh then you might want to take a look at this i'll go ahead and link it down below okay update time this is where things get really exciting so you know that I shoot on an R six Mark II and you know that I shoot my my stills with an R5 and that I love the 7 series cameras i've been a big fan i was a 7D owner way back in the day i love Canon's APS-C camera so we've got some updates on what we might see in 2025 so starting with the R six Mark III which I think we can call the most anticipated camera from Canon right now considering the fact that the R six seems to be getting more and more and more popular i see more professional wedding and portrait photographers and videographers talking about the R six and the fact that at that price point where you get that down sampled 6K you can shoot 6K RAW and as long as 24 megapixels is okay for you it's a phenomenal camera to buy and we're we're looking for an update the rumor is that we might actually be seeing it pretty soon here before the even the kickoff of the summer maybe they're trying to get in before uh June wedding season now the rumored specs have it as 24 megapixels this is a stacked sensor coming from the R3 with dual pixel autofocus 2 inheriting the system from the R5 Mark II that potentially the external screen would be an OLED that it would have additional articulation in the screen design that it potentially would have CF Express support which I think would mean that we would get that 6K raw internal there's also the potential for new lens announcements at that same time again I love my R six Mark II i can really only think of a few little things that I would want improved and if it has the autofocus system and the sensor from the R3 I think that that would be huge but the other camera in Canon's kind of enthusiast proumer lineup is the R seven so if the R six Mark III ends up being kind of the baby sister to the R3 then the R seven Mark II would be the baby brother to the R1 as the flagship of the APS system the 7 series has always been the camera that just gets all the features and just puts them on a slightly smaller sensor for a phenomenal price so what we're hearing is that there might be a potential upgrade in sensor resolution that may potentially enable 8K video but still be in a lightweight body and give you all the speed and autofocus capability that you would expect out of something like an R seven Mark III borrowed likely from the R1 one rumor we're hearing is that it might actually ditch the mechanical shutter rely completely on electronic but that would mean it would need to have an extremely fast sensor that along with some of the updates from the R5 and the R1 in terms of ergonomics potentially a cooling grip and dual card slots although the rumors out there about CF Express I'm not so sure release expectations somewhere in the third or fourth quarter of this year so definitely time for more leaks and more for us to talk about now moving outside of the Canon Sphere Nikon has released a new camera the Z52 has come out as a successor to kind of one of the best budget full-frame cameras on the market it's got an upgraded sensor it's got better image quality better readout speeds i'm not a Nikon shooter so I don't know that I can really speak with much authority on that camera but I would love to know from you if you are a Nikon shooter or if you have handled this camera what you think down in the comments another company that has been extremely busy this year is Fuji now I saw them at the WPPI show as well as at NAB where they were showing off the new range finder style finder the 100 RXFRF here's what I can tell you it looks cool as hell and it's fun to hold but the other thing that we're hearing from Fuji is that they might be releasing a half frame which is a fixed lens camera with a vertical LCD design and a 1in sensor i guess that's one way to uh get into the compact mark they're already in the compact market what is this for also their lens road map is expanding on the Xmount so we've got stuff like a 120mm f2 portrait lens they've got fisheye lenses there's a ton of diversity in the Fujifilm ecosystem so that's it for me and the general Canon and camera news for this week i really enjoyed going to NAB i'm going to be making videos about my experiences at WPPI and NAB i got to actually chat with some really amazing people there see some really great products at both of those shows learn a ton so if you're interested in that go ahead and get subscribed to the channel go and hit the like button if you
