Windsor Knot Tutorial

Overview

  • The Windsor knot is also known as the double Windsor or the full Windsor.
  • A popular way to tie a tie.

Steps to Tie a Windsor Knot

Preparation

  • Start Position: Collar up, tie around your neck.
  • Hand Position:
    • Right hand: Wide end of the tie.
    • Left hand: Narrow end of the tie.
  • Important Tip: The longer you make the wide end, the lower the tie will hang.
  • Tie Alignment: Line up your tie, saving time later.

Knotting Process

  1. Crossing the Ends:

    • Cross the wide end over the narrow end, leaving about 4 inches (10 cm) on the narrow end.
  2. Threading the Wide End:

    • With your left hand, take the wide end and thread it through the back of the opening from behind.
    • Pull it all the way through.
  3. Wrap the Wide End:

    • Wrap the wide end all the way around the back, then switch hands.
    • The back of the tie should face outward.
  4. Threading Through the Front:

    • With the wide end in your right hand, thread it through the front of the opening and down.
    • Pull it through completely.
  5. Creating the Knot:

    • Identify the inside of the knot that resembles a triangle.
    • Place your left index finger on the knot to hold it in place.
    • With your right hand, wrap the wide end around the knot from right to left.
    • Grab it from behind, keeping your index finger in place.
  6. Final Threading:

    • Push the wide end through the opening again, from the back.
    • Your index finger should create a tunnel for the tie.
    • Thread the tie down through this tunnel and pull it down.

Final Adjustments

  • Adjust and tighten by alternating between the long and short ends of the tie.
  • Gradually shape the knot until you achieve a sharp, symmetrical, triangular knot.
  • Completion: Pull down the collar, and you have a full Windsor knot.
