guys welcome to another video you've got Mr Everything English and today we are looking at Ed Exel English language paper one question number three everything education tuition for maths English and science so guys when we look at paper one question three what do we find guys we find that this question is worth six marks now what a six marks mean for a six mark question we are given 15 minutes in our exam and we are looking to produce two pretzel paragraphs to answer this question now the question always looks at a section of the extract in this case is looking at lines 24 to 38 and it always asks us to talk about language and structure not language or structure we must talk about both and it always gives us a question to talk about language and structure over here we must talk about how language and structure is used to show the narrator's thoughts and feelings about the count so how does the writer use language and structure to show the narrator's feelings about the count now before we kind of dive deep into the question and what we have to do let's quickly have a look at the Mark scheme for this question because it's very important we understand what we have to do before we look at everything else so naturally guys we want to try to be try our best to get six out of six because it is a six mark question and we must do the following to get six out of six number one we must analyze how both remember guys not one too many year 11s They just do one and not the other we must analyze both language and structure and look at the effect that they have guys we must look at language and structure and look at the effect that they have and then they ask us to look at vocabulary sentence structure and other features that we will do anyway but essentially guys as a pivotal part of the mark scheme we must make sure that by the end of our two paragraphs to get six out of six we've analyzed language and we've analyzed structure and the second part guys it looks at the quality of our evidence it looks at the quality of our referencing and it's making sure that your quotes your references support whatever it is you're trying to argue easy peasy quote technique effect you are marked on these three things guys I make videos right about AQA and now making videos about Ed EXL one thing you will realize it's all the same it's all just the wording this question it marks you on your Technique it marks you on your effect and it marks you upon your quot now there's a big elephant in the room and that is the this if you can't talk about language and structure you're finished but too many year 11s They reach this point of year 11s and they still don't know any language devices and they still don't know any structural devices but this is where we must try our best to fix this once and for all now guys what you see on your screen is everything you need for this question and the other questions I've got language devices bulletproof structural devices and Street structural devices I'll explain all of them in a second but if we don't understand this guys you're going to fail the question there's not a debate to be had here if you don't know language devices you can't access the language question if you don't know structural devices you can't access the structural question you will fail before you begin now we are at this point in year 11 where I truly believe eight language devices is more than enough now the eight language device that are chosen guys number one is a simile a simile is when you compare two nouns using like or as for example this pen is like my wand number two we have personification personification is when you give a non-human a human feature this pen is my best friend number three guys on a Matti these are sounds crack Creek crunch boom these are all sounds number four we have oxymoron oxymoron is when you have two opposite words side by side normally it's an adjective with a noun for example the slow cheatah the small giant this is an oxymoron JX position these are two opposing ideas it's when things are not normal is when things are strange so if I wrote a story about a slow cheater that's just a position number six zoomorphism guys what do you find in a zoo you find animals and this is when you give a human the feature of an animal don't bark at me I'm giving you the feature of a dog number seven guys sibilance this is the cousin of alliteration but I think it's way better sibilance guys is when words in a row begin with the letter s the S the the snake slowly slithered through the sand and finally guys number eight one of my favorites pathetic fallacy pathetic fallacy is when the weather reflects the mood for example if it's sunny everyone's happy if it's raining everyone is sad then we have the second column guys bulletproof structure if something is bulletproof it cannot be defeated it cannot be touched and this is what I mean by a bulletproof structural device I argue no matter what happens you will be able to find these in your answer in your exam there will always be a long paragraph I'm not saying a longest paragraph but they will always be a long paragraph they will by default then be a short paragraph then there will be a long sentence and by default there will be a short sentence these four are your backup they're going to be there use them if you need to Number Five Guys zooming in writers will will always zoom in into something they might focus on Dracula they might focus on a character on super detail and then they might zoom out and talk about the weather that's zooming in zooming out and when they do this the focus May shift so I might talk about the door over there then I might shift the focus and talk about the projector then I might shift the focus and talk about the table I'm not zooming in I'm not zooming out I'm just bouncing around the room and then guys finally something new something new this is something new of significance this could be a new character this could be a new setting this could be anything new that is significant in the text now these eight will e will always be there and they are easy peasy to find are they the most effective no but they're easy to find I don't want any of my air 11s coming out of the exam saying to me sir I couldn't find any structure then we have the other structural devices these ones are common but they're not always there and they're a little less sorry and they're a little more difficult to find but they're much more effective the first one guys is a list a list is anything that is four or more so for example I went to the shops and I purchased some eggs some milk some bread some chocolate that's four if I carried on the list would continue but it must be a minimum of four next one guys we have dialogue speech hello how are you I'm good how are you number three guys I've got pathetic fallacy there and I've got pathetic fantasy there pathetic fantasy as a structural device looks at how long the weather is there for if the weather is there for a line one line that's a language device but if in paragraph one and in paragraph two and in paragraph three and in paragraph 4 the weather continues then it is a structural device Number Four Guys repetition we're looking at words or phrases that are repeated throughout the extract number five foreshadowing foreshadowing is when the writer gives clues about future events my stomach is rumbling I'm giving you Clues guys that I'm hungry and I'm going to eat very very soon number six guys flashback this is when you refer to events that happen in the past last week last month last year and number seven guys Jer position I've got it there and I've got it there juter position as a structural device is when the contrast happens over a period of time for example Harry Potter in the first book joses Harry Potter in the last book this is over a big chunk of writing this is a structural device and finally guys semantic feel semantic feel is when words can be linked to one idea so the writer want to scare you they might use words every couple of lines to build that atmosphere of fear but these are the devices that you must know to access this question and the exam as a whole otherwise guys you're going to get stuck if you don't know this it's game over before you've even begun so let's do a quick recap we know this question is worth six marks for a six mark question we know we're spending 15 minutes and in these 15 minutes we're looking to write two two fantastic pretzel paragraphs now the mark scheme tells us that in this question we must speak about language devices and structural devices we must talk about the effects they have and we must have appropriate quotes that support the argument we are making done now how do you go about actually answering the question let's pull up a question in lines 24 to 38 how does the right to language instruct to show the narrator's thoughts and feelings about the count those of you who have been following my content guys you know the paragraph structure that I use is pretzel p r t e z e and l now we begin with the point then we have a reference your reference looks like your code now for the Ed Exel exam board this is how I want you guys to do it for your first technique try to pick structure and then explain the effect and then for your zooming in try to zoom in to a language device then you explain the effect and then you give the link now this being said when it comes to our reference we're going to refer to lines and when I say lines guys as a maximum we are referring to five I don't want you guys to be referring to more than five lines at a time and that's a maximum now the reason we do structure and language in the same paragraph is because we want to make sure we're collecting marks from the very beginning what I don't want is language language in one paragraph structure structure in another paragraph because is let's just say for argument sake you're running out of time and you only manag to do one paragraph you've ruined your exam so we cover all bases so we refer to lines lines 1 to five lines 1 to 4 we do this because it's much easier doing this when we're speaking about structure imagine you want to use a long sentence you can't be copying down the entire long sentence so in those lines lines one 2 three or lines one 125 or whatever we pick we pick our structural device and in those same lines we pick our language device this could be a language device or it could be a word or a phrase before I forget guys earlier on I had on the board also that we can also talk about things like nouns adjectives verbs and adverbs we can also talk about these single words now let's put this into practice right so we're doing two of these paragraphs let's plan both so let's read the extract I'll pick my quote now guys uh but my very feelings chained to repulsion and Terror when I saw the whole man slowly emerged for the window and begin to crawl down the castle wall over that Dreadful Abyss face down with his cloak spreading out around him like great wings okay question is first things first this is going to be my reference guys so when it comes to my reference let's plan one full paragraph together maybe even two guys when it comes to my reference I'm going to be using line 28 to line 31 that's my reference now complete now how does the writer think of remember guys we're looking at thoughts and feelings how does the writer think of the count how does the writer feel about the count count in this part of the text I'm going to make a very simple point because remember you're not marked upon the quality of your point for this question you're only marked upon your quote your techniques and your effect so I'm going to make a point guys that the writer feels afraid of the count in this part of the text now let's start with structure guys what structural technique has been used here from there all the way today guys we have a long sentence so that is what I will be talking about as my structural technique so that is what I will be using for structure and for zooming in I'm going to use his cloak spreading out around him like great Wings I'm going to use over here the simile so guys I'm going to use for my zooming in I'm going to zoom into the simile at this part of the extract and when I talk about my simile guys I would write it down his cloaks spreading out around him like great wings and there's my language also picked now we never plan our effect we never guys plan our effect but let's say I was talking about this paragraph what would I say I would say in Source in Source a the writer feels absolutely Afraid by The Count this is clear from lines 28 to line 31 where the writer uses a long sentence and then I will talk about the effect and the effect will be how the long sentence emphasizes how there many many many things to fear about this creature there's not one there's not two there's a long description of the problems and then when we zoom into the simile about the cloak spreading out like great wing I will talk about how the simile gives the impression that this Dracula this this being is a animal he's like a bat he's a creature that is coming for the characters and that is how it adds to the fear it's a sight you've never seen before therefore as you can see this creature creates immense Evil all right let's move on that's one paragraph PL let's now move on to the second paragraph for the second paragraph guys I would use the quote for argument sake let's use what man what manner of man is this or what Manner or creature is it in the semblance of man this here let me get my pen guys this here would be my reference guys this here would be my reference now for this one guys because I'm not using a m quote I would simply just copy it down now when I do my structural technique what would I pick I'm going to zoom in to the repetition of what manner of so here guys I'm going to speak about the repetition as my first technique and for my language technique I'm going to talk about the rhetorical question and that is what I would zoom into and what would be my point very simple guys the writer is confused they've never seen something like this before they've never seen a site like this before now on the page we don't plan our effects but let me talk you guys through it again paragraph number two paragraph number two the writer feels very confused after seeing the count the the writer can't understand what kind of site this is this can be seen through the quote i' give the quote now the repetition what manner of what manner of really emphasizes this confusion they can't make sense they're almost talking to themselves repeating what is this what is going on explain the effect then when I zoom in I'm going to zoom into the question because the question further emphasizes this confusion there are so many unanswered questions by the site before them then I will link it back to my point about how this shows confusion and guys look here's an example of how you would plan this question you are looking to do two pretzel paragraphs and you can chain these up you can even talk about single words you can even talk about single words you could talk about here for example rather than doing the simil for your language technique you could talk about the noun wings and the symbolism of the Wings over here you can speak about the creature so remember guys for structure always pick a structural device but for your language either pick a language device or a noun verb adverb adjective and so on but guys if you're able to do two paragraphs like this you will walk out of your exam for paper one question number three doing really really well because remember for this question you are marked upon your referencing right for each paragraph we refer to the text twice we do it once at the top and once when we zoom in then you are marked upon your techniques for each paragraph We have technique there and we have technique again when we zoom in for our first technique is structure for our second technique is language and then for each paragraph We Do the effect there and we do the effect there that is why it's a beautiful method to aim to get top top marks now you may then Wonder Sir we do a point we do a point and we do a link but technically we're not marked on these so why do we do these if we're not marked on the point and the link guys the reason we do the point and the link is because a big problem in English is w and this is our waffle check we have to make sure we don't go off task so in your point if you're going to say that the writer views the account as being confusing and a character he's never seen before that's your point now you must prove this the entire paragraph and at the end of your paragraph is your waffle check if you get to the end of your paragraph and you can't link it back to your point then you've probably gone off task and for me guys even though you're not marked upon the point and the link me as a writer I need Focus tell me what to write a paragraph about and that is what the point and the link does all right guys I hope this video helps quick recap guys quick recap six mark question 15 minutes two paragraphs you must talk about the effect of language and structure and the quality of your quote must be good because your quote must prove and answer the question when it comes to language and structure here's language language devices or words as in nouns and adjectives or structured devices from these lists over here and you're aiming to do two pretzel paragraphs you're marked upon your reference you're marked upon your Technique you're marked upon your effect you're marked upon your zooming in and you're marked upon your effect and here's an example of two paragraph that I've planned and all you would then do in your exam is write out this paragraph over here and write out this paragraph over here all right guys I hope this video helps as always it's been Mr Everything English peace
