Lecture Notes: Inflammation in Oral Health

Key Concepts:

  • Inflammation: Characterized by redness and bleeding in the mouth.
    • Localized Inflammation: Less than 30% of the mouth is affected.
    • Generalized Inflammation: More than 30% of the mouth is affected.

Determining Localized vs. Generalized Inflammation:

  • Localized Inflammation:
    • Example: Inflammation only in the anterior region.
    • Calculation: If 6 out of 32 teeth areas are inflamed, then:
      • (6/32) * 100 = 18.75%
      • Since 18.75% < 30%, it's considered localized.
  • Generalized Inflammation:
    • Example: Redness and inflammation are widespread across various areas in the mouth.*

Types of Inflammation Locations:

  • Papillary Inflammation (Papillary Gingivitis):
    • Inflammation on the papilla only.
  • Marginal Inflammation:
    • Inflammation on both the papilla and the margin.
  • Diffuse Inflammation:
    • Inflammation is pervasive, affecting the margin, papilla, and extending to the muco-gingival junction.

Visual Identification:

  • Diffuse Inflammation:
    • Inflammation seen on margin, papilla, attached gingiva, up to muco-gingival junction.
  • Papillary Inflammation Example:
    • Only papilla is inflamed, without redness on margins or attached gingiva.
  • Marginal Inflammation Example:
    • Redness and puffiness along the margins, involving papilla and margin.

Recap of Inflammation Types:

  • Papillary Inflammation: Only papilla is inflamed.
  • Marginal Inflammation: Both papilla and margin are inflamed.
  • Diffuse Inflammation: Papilla, margin, and attached gingiva are all inflamed and red.
