How is NADPH formed in the light-dependent reactions?
Press to flip
NADPH is formed by the addition of electrons to NADP⁺ via the enzyme NADP Reductase.
Why is water necessary for the light-dependent reactions?
Water provides the electrons needed to replace those lost by chlorophyll in Photosystem II and releases oxygen as a byproduct.
Describe the process of chemiosmosis in photosynthesis.
It’s the movement of ions across a semipermeable membrane, down their electrochemical gradient. In photosynthesis, it refers to the production of ATP using the proton gradient created by the electron transport chain in the thylakoid membrane.
What is the significance of the light-independent reactions being called 'dark reactions'?
They do not directly require light to proceed and rely on the products of the light-dependent reactions (ATP and NADPH) to reduce CO₂ to glucose.
What molecule is regenerated at the end of the Calvin Cycle to enable continuous carbon fixation?
Ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate (RuBP).
What role does ATP play in the Calvin Cycle?
ATP provides the energy required for the reduction phase and the regeneration of RuBP.
What wavelengths of light does chlorophyll primarily absorb?
Blue and red light.
What are the end products of the light-dependent reactions?
Oxygen (O₂), ATP, and NADPH.
What is the function of Photosystem II in the light-dependent reactions?
Photosystem II absorbs light energy, which excites electrons that are then transferred to plastoquinone. The lost electrons are replenished by splitting water, producing oxygen and protons.
Explain the importance of the proton gradient in the thylakoid membrane.
The proton gradient drives the synthesis of ATP through ATP synthase during chemiosmosis.
What is the main role of chlorophyll in photosynthesis?
Chlorophyll absorbs light energy to drive the reactions of photosynthesis.
What is the general equation for photosynthesis?
6 H₂O + 6 CO₂ → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6 O₂
What are the three phases of the Calvin Cycle?
Carbon Fixation, Reduction, and Regeneration.
What enzyme is responsible for carbon fixation in the Calvin Cycle?
The enzyme Ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco).
Where do the light-dependent reactions of photosynthesis occur?
In the thylakoid membranes of the chloroplasts.
