(soft music) - [Narrator] The Pilgrim's
progress was written in 1675 by John Bunyan. A poor tradesman who was
jailed in Bedford England for preaching the word of God. It was while he was in
prison, that John Bunyan wrote one of the most beloved
stories of all time. The story is told from a dream. (dramatic music) I laid down in a place to sleep and as I slept I dreamed a dream. I saw a man with a great burden
on his back, reading a book. I saw the visions of the coming fire, haunted the man called Christian. (dramatic intense music) (fire burning roaring) (dogs barking) - Are you still reading that book? - Actually, yes. It makes a lot of sense. - You told me that that book upset you when you're still reading it, I thought you were gonna stop. - I know. I just can't put it down. - So what did you read about today? - Well, I know this is
gonna sound a little crazy. And I wouldn't say this unless
I knew it to be the truth. But today I read that our city is gonna be destroyed by fire and we're all gonna die. Unless, unless I find
a way for us to escape I have hug of you all very
much more than anything. And I will not stop until I
find this place of refuge. This place of pure joy
that this book talks about. - You're right. That does sound crazy. Daddy and I need to talk. (soft music) I want you to stop reading this book. It's nothing but stories,
fantasies, fairytales. It's not real. But Christian I am real. Our children are real and I don't want you to
upset them with this crazy talk about the end of the world. Darling we're perfectly safe here. - I am not gonna stand by
here and wait for us to die Right? And this burden just
gets bigger and bigger. I have to find a way to get rid of it and to save our family. That's the truth of this. - Then let us help you
get rid of your burden. I've called someone that I think that maybe you should talk to- - Yeah. You think it's that easy? You think I like this thing? No one in this world can get rid of this. - I've made a place for
you in the guestroom. I think you'll be more comfortable there. - Don't do this. - I don't wanna hear
another word about this. - [Narrator] In my dream,
I saw that the great burden and the visions of the coming
destruction made it difficult for Christian to sleep. Day after day, Christian
walked the neighborhood, studying his book. He prayed earnestly, but the answer that would save them all, in my dream, I saw that his
family would not listen to him. His family refused to open
their eyes to the truth. Like so many. They were blinded by the
things of this world. (horror music) (beast roaring)
(dramatic intense music) (dogs barking) - What do you want me to do!? - What seems to be the problem. - Can't find a way to save my
family from the coming fires. We're not ready to die. - Not ready to die? With all the evil in the world, wouldn't it be a good thing
to get away from it all? - If I died, my family dies. And this burden is dragging me to hell. - I see. Well, I believe I can help you. - Mom, who's Daddy talking to? - I don't know. You stay here. I'll be right back. - "Run from the wrath to come." Run? Run where? - Over there. You see the gate. If you look hard enough,
you'll see your shining light. - I think I see something. - Then run to it and don't look back. And when you get there,
you'll find the gate. - Then what? - Knock. You'll know what to do next. Don't just stand there son, run! And don't look back. - Christian don't go! (epic music) - [Narrator] So Christian ran
with all his might to the path that would lead him to the gate. - Wait! Come back! What about your family? - Keep running you freak. - Looks like we got a runner. - [Narrator] Two of his
friends, Obstinate and Pliable were determined to bring him back. They caught up with him just
before he reached the path. - Christian? Christian, stop, stop, stop, stop, stop! I'm getting old for this. - Why are you stopping me? - Because we wanna try to
talk some sense into you. - Yeah. - What, you want me to go back
to the city of Destruction? - [Both] Yeah. - Now think about it. The very name of our city
should make you want to run with me. - How comes we never thought of that? - That's nonsense. It's a name, Christian. That's all it is. It's a name. Listen, I've heard all the stories too. You know, you go wandering
around back there we go with you, we're all gonna die. - We're all gonna die anyway, right? And then we're gonna
find yourselves burning in a place of fire and brimstone. Okay? Listen to your hearts. You know what I'm saying is true, right? Come with me, save yourself,
save your families. - You don't know what
you're saying, Christian. Even if you got past
that, the swamp of despond even if you've got that far,
there are creatures out there that will rip the flesh from the bones. Not to mention the the
King of all demons... - Apollyon
- Apollyon. You've got everything a person could ever want in this world. You've got a beautiful home. You got a wife that loves
you, kids that adore you. We live in a life of luxury here. - Very luxurious. - Yeah.
- Let's go. - Yeah. No, no, no, wait it's a facade. Okay? Come with me and you'll
experience real life. Real joy. Nothing will compare to
what you'll be rewarded with if you follow this path
faithfully to the end. - And where do you think this path is gonna lead you in the end? - To a great inheritance, right? One that goes beyond
your wildest imagination. It's incorruptible, undefiled. One that will never waiver As long as you diligently seek the path. - That sounds nice. - Come on, it's all written in this book. Come on. - I'm not interested
in the book, Christian. I want you to go back home. That's what I want. - I can never got back. - What do you mean you can never go back? You can never go back? - No. - Fine. Have it your way. Let's go Pliable, let's go. He's crazy, he's lost his mind. - No, no, wait, wait, wait,
wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. What... What if he's right? - What if he's- - Hang on, hang on, listen, listen. I've heard some of these stories and if it's true, well then
he's smarter than we are. He's trying to find a
place that's more beautiful than we've ever even imagined. Right? - Yes.
- Right. - You've lost your mind, Pliable. You've been standing too close to him. Listen, the smartest
thing that you can ever do is to come back home with me. Come back to your wife and family. He's crazy. And if you go with him, you're gonna die. - No, that's not true. That's not true. You come with me, right? And you're gonna gain
everything I spoke about today and much, much more. - Yeah. - Okay? It's all written by blood by who loves us. - I've made up my mind. - Fine, let's go.
- I'm gonna go with Christian. - You... - You do know how to get to
this place though, right? - Yes, I do. Men named Evangelists told
us that we follow that path to the end it'll bring us to a gate. Come on. - Okay, well... Come on, let's go, come on. - I'm going home. You two are crazy. I'm gonna enjoy the nice
air conditioned house. I'm gonna have to sit down have a nice meal with my family. See? But know, you're gonna go
play out there in the swamp. I'm even gonna have that homemade sausage that you love so much that my wife makes. We gonna have nice chips. Gonna have a cool beer maybe. Yeah, some nice cool drinks. You have a real good time in the swamp because I'm gonna be comfortable. But no kissing black flier to. Maybe a nap that's more your style. Have a good time guys. Swamp things, muck and mire, see ya! - Are you ready for this journey friend? - Yeah. Yeah, come on. Come on, let's go. - [Christian] This is amazing. - Can you tell me some
more about this kingdom we're headed towards? - It's kind of hard to describe really. - What about that book? You really believe everything
that's written in there is true? - Absolutely. - Like what? - Like we're gonna give eternal life and a kingdom of pure joy. Will be given crowns of glory. Clothes that will shine like the sun. There'll be no more tears for the owner of the place
or wipe away everyone. - Will there'll be others there? - Angels that will dazed
the eyes to look upon. Thousands and thousands
of others that will, have been there before us
that are loving and joyful. - It just sounds too good to be true. But when we get there, how do we get in? - Well, it says in this book that if we were truly
willing to receive it it will be given to us freely. - You know, I really
can't wait to get there. Do you think we can
pick it up a little bit. - I'm doing the best I can. - [Narrator] I saw Christian
and Pliable press forward talking of the wonders
of the Celestial city. Not paying much attention to the past and where they were walking. - Let's hurry up a little bit
and we can get there sooner. Okay?
- All right. - Come on, come on. (both grunting) - I'm stuck. - What happened? - We were hurrying, we went off the path. - Off the path. We get started, I'm following you. Stinks in here. - Why did I listen to you. If I make it out of
here, you're on your own. - I'm stuck. Pliable I'm stuck, can you help me? - No, sorry. - Pliable. Will you help me? - Nope. - Pliable! - Have fun. (Christian grunts) Help! - [Narrator] Just when all hope seem lost a man named Help spotted
Christian in the swamp - How in the world did
you get stuck down there. - I don't know, I guess
I just got careless. - Oh, you didn't see the path, huh? - Think you could help me out. - And I'll pitch this rope down to you. (soft music) Oh man. You okay? - Thank you. Thank you. - Bless you. Look, there's a path
you've been looking for, right over there. Why isn't it more clearly
marked to better maintain? - Son, those pipes are just full of it. When the spirit of God
begins to awaken those to their simple conditions,
they're overcome with fear along with countless
discouraging thoughts. And it all ends up right there. But the King has provided a way out. You just stay on the path. You're going to be just fine. - Hey, thank you for everything. - No problem bro. That's what I'm here for. - [Narrator] In my dream, I saw Christian continue on the path. He was about to meet
a silver ton gentleman by the name of Mr. Worldly Wise from the town of carnal policy. - Hello, my good man. That's quite a burden you're carrying. - It's quite cumbersome. - Where are you going? - Man named evangelists told me if I follow this path to a gate I'll learn how to rid myself of this. - Evangelists told you
to follow this path. (laughs) I should have known. He has no idea what he's talking about. You couldn't find a more
dangerous path if you tried. Judging from your appearance I see that you have managed to
survive the swamp of despond. That's easy part. Keep on this path and you'll
assume face exhaustion, pain, hunger, thieves. Not to mention the wrath of Apollyon. To put it plainly death. Believe me. I've heard many stories firsthand. Well, I'd rather face all
those dangers and more than to carry those throughout my life. - How did you get that thing anyway? - By reading this? - I should have known. It's happened to many weak minded men. But don't you worry here. I've got the solution. In fact, instead of facing danger you will have an easy path. Friendship and contentment. - Okay? Okay, I'm listening. There's a town called Morality. It's on a hill about a mile from here. When you get there, you
ask for Mr. Legality. He's an expert at getting
rid of burdens like yours. And if he's not at home,
his handsome son, Civility is very experienced at
this sort of thing as well. You just follow the road to Morality. You'll see. (thunder striking) You'll see - [Narrator] If Christian
thought his burden was great. He was about to find out that
things could be far worse as he was about to face the
fire mountain, Mt, Sinai. A dangerous climb that is
ended many of Pilgrims journey. (fire burning roaring) (blasting) (thunder striking) (Christian panting) - What are you doing here? - I see it didn't take long
for you to wander off the path. - I've had a man told
me this was the easiest and fastest way to get rid of my burden. - God says in his word that my
just one shall live by faith. And if he shrinks back, I
will not be pleased with him. I never should have doubted you. Now you were in misery
because you rejected the counsel of God and
walked off the way of peace. - It's over, isn't it. I never thought of a way
from my family to escape. - Take courage, son. Every sin can be forgiven. Just have faith and believe. But there are three things
about Mr. Worldly Wise as so called advisor you must hate. He laid you off the right path. Strive to enter the narrow gate because narrow is the
gate that leads to life. And there are a few to find. Mr. Worldly Wise wanted you to be offended at what Christ did at the cross. The King of glory himself said that he that will save
his life will lose it. But he did seek after the
Holy One will save it. Mr. Worldly Wise, he wanted
you to be bound to the law so that you would die in your sins and not making it into heaven. - So what do I do now? - Go back to the path. And if you get off this time there was no guarantee that help to come. - Thank you. - [Narrator] Christian was able
to make it back on the path. Little did he know that the gate Evangelists told him
about was just up ahead, but so was Satan's fortress. (demons roaring) (dramatic music) (arrows whooshing) - Let me in! - What do you want? - I was told I will find a
way to escape with this gate. - Now, that was a close one. - What's going on out there? - Hold on that is an enemy fortress, not too far from here
where Satan and his armies shoot arrows and anyone
who comes to that gate. He kills a few every now and then. - I praise the Lord you let me in. - Oh, indeed, he should be praised. We never turn anyone away from that gate. No matter what their
past sins may have been. So now who told you how to get here? - A man named Evangelists
told me I would meet someone who would show me the way. - What then, that would be me. (birds chirping) This is the path. This is the way you must go. It was created by the
patriarchs, the prophets, Jesus and the disciples. It's the only way to heaven. The Celestial city. - Is it possible to
get lost along the way? - There are many ways off the path. I guess there are so many temptations. But you'll know the right
way from the wrong way, because you will always
stay on the narrow path. - Do you think it could help me get rid of this terrible burden? - Oh, I'm afraid you must comfort yourself with that burden a bit longer. As when you reached the
place of deliverance that burden will fall off by itself. Have faith. Now you keep down this path and you will reach the
house with the interpreter. Knock and he'll answer. And he will tell you
great and mighty things that you do not know. - Thank you. - [Narrator] Now I saw in my
dream that after Christian and Goodwill parted company,
Christian walk for some time before finally reaching the
house of the interpreter. - Welcome, I see you
made it through the gate. - Thank you. - I trust Goodwill
showed you down the path? - He told me you would show
me great and mighty things I do not know. - Indeed. And there is much to show. - I look forward to it. Thank you. (soft music) - Please sweep the room. Spray the room down with water so the dust can be swept away. - I don't understand the meaning of this. - This part represents the heart which has never been cleansed
by the grace of the gospel. The dust is original sin which continues to corrupt
and destroy the soul. The man represents the law, which instead of cleansing the heart only gives sin its strength. The woman who sprinkled the
water represents the gospel which is able to overcome
sin in our lives. Once the heart is clean, it's fit for the King of
Glory to come in and live. The palace represents heaven. There are few the courage
to face the challenge. (dramatic music) - Write down my name, Fearless. (swords clanging)
(men grunting) (Man groaning) (dramatic music) - [Narrator] Then I heard
voices from the Palace call out to the man saying. - [Man] Come in, come in. Eternal glory you shall win. - I think I know the meaning of this. - Good. - Why is she so afraid? - Tell this man, why
you were so frightened? - I had a nightmare. No, it was more like a vision. I saw dark clouds race across the sky. There were flashes of lightning and thunder that seemed
to shake the whole earth. (thunderstorm striking) And I heard a loud trumpet. And I saw a man in the
clouds who looked like he was dressed like lightning. There were thousands like him. Then there was this
booming voice that said, "Arise you who are dead
and come to judgment." The graves opened up
and the dead came out. And the man in the clouds opened a book. And he called the whole
earth to stand before him. Then he told his army to
clear the threshing floor down to the wheat, into the barn, but to throw the shaft
into the Lake of fire. Many were carried away into the clouds. I was left behind. I tried to hide from the man in the clouds all my sins flashed before my eyes and I knew I was guilty and there was nothing I can
do or say to change anything. I thought the day of judgment had come. I know I'm not ready. Hell is real. And that's where I'm going. - So what do you think of
all that I've shown you? - That there's great hope and great fear. - Store all of these things in your heart. And remember the comforter
will always be there to guide you on your way to heaven. Come let me show you back to the path. - [Narrator] Now I saw in my dream that Christian was back on the path. His burden seemed heavier than ever. He wondered if relief would ever come. But Christian's faith
kept him moving forward. He would soon find himself
at a place called Salvation. (bright dramatic music) (Christian panting) (hymnal music) (whooshing) - Thank you! Thank you. Thank you. (bright music) You have given me rest by you sorrow. And life by your death. - Peace be with you. Your sins are forgiven. Study these words as they will give you
strength for the journey. You must present this at the
gates of the Celestial city. Guarded with your life. These are for you. - [Narrator] Now I saw in my dream that Christian started down the path with renewed strength and purpose. With his certificate in
hand, he was sure of heaven. Not far away, two men were also making
their way to the path. He was about to stumble upon
Formalist and Hypocrisy. Two happy go lucky characters who were blazing their own path to heaven. - Gentlemen. - Hello. - Hi. - How are ya? - Fine. Where you from? - We are from the land of Vainglory. - Yeah, where are you headed? - We're headed to the
Celestial city to get praised. - Why didn't you come in through the gate? I mean, isn't it written that those who don't
enter through the door will be seen as thieves and robbers? - That by you, but
really doesn't buy to us. And if you knew how far it was to the gate and where we live you'll
taken the shortcut as well. - Well, isn't that going against the will of law of the city? (laughs) - You worry too much. Our people have been taking
this shortcut for centuries. It's been our way since,
since anybody can remember. I am sure that the
impartial judge at the city will let us in. (chuckles) Anyway, we're both on the same path. How are you any better off than us? - That's not what I'm saying. You can't go around
making up your own rules. I mean, as it's written, I just, I don't think the King's
gonna allow you guys in this Celestial city. - I get some great ideas
is why don't you go ahead and just jot those down and
get your thoughts together, and we'll go over 'em and
we'll see what comes out of it. Very promising. Come on.
- Come on. (soft music)
(birds chirping) - [Narrator] In my dream, I
saw that the new companion started down the path and
both making very good time. It did not take long before
they found themselves standing in front of
the Hill of difficulty. Now formalist in hypocrisy
were in the habit of taking what they thought
would be the easy way. So rather than climb the hill one took the past called Destruction, and the other took the path called Danger. They were confident that they would meet
Christian on the other side. (suspenseful music) (rocks rumbling) (beast roaring) (screaming) Now in my dream I saw that
night was about to fall as Christian approach
the Palace Beautiful. Christian was about to find out why many pilgrims ran for their lives when approaching the great estate. (lions roaring) - Is your faith so small? You have nothing to fear. They are here to test your faith. If you stay on the path you'll be fine. (lions roaring) (soft music) - Thank you. Would you mind if I stayed here tonight? - Well, this house was built
by the Lord of the Hill to provide relief for
pilgrims on their journey to the Celestial city. But whether or not you stay here depends on the ladies of the house. - [Narrator] In my dream,
I saw the Christian enjoyed a magnificent meal. After the meal they talked about the Lord as a great warrior who
conquered death at the cross, but not without great danger
and loss of much blood. He did this out of pure
love for his country. - Why did you become a Pilgrim? - To find a way for me and my family to escape the fires to come. - Is that the only reason that
you seek the Celestial city? To escape the fires of hell? - I wanted to see him alive who died for the sins of the world. I needed to get rid of
the evil inside of me. I wanted to live forever
in the company of those that sing Holy, "Holy, Holy
is the Lord God Almighty." - Where is your family? (laughing) - I tried to get them to come with me. I prayed in earnest for them. I told them how God was
gonna destroy the city and that we'd all face judgment. They wouldn't hear me. So I decided to leave and
go on this journey by my own to find a way for us all. Sometimes I wonder if I will
ever make it to the end. My greatest fear is that
I'll let them all down. - I believe you did
everything in your power to convince your family to
come with you on this journey. You must be tired. Come. Watchful will show you to your room. - Thank you. Thank you all. - [Narrator] A few days later, Christian was shown a great room that held many artifacts and weapons to strengthen the faithful
on their journey to heaven. - It's amazing how God
used ordinary people and ordinary things to
accomplish Great miracles. And this is one of my favorites. This is the rod that Moses
used to guide the Israelites across the red sea and
into the promised land. - The jars, trumpets
and lamp used by Gideon to scare the Median army as
they're running for their lives. - Samson used this jaw bone
to defeat an entire army all by himself. - And this is the sling
and stone that David used to defeat Goliath at Elah. (soft music) - Who used this armor and sword? - No one. These are for you. - You will need them to
complete your journey. (epic dramatic music) - [Narrator] In my dream, I
saw that it would not be long before Christian would have
use for his armor and sword. As he would enter the
Valley of humiliation. Home of the money demon, Apollyon. (suspenseful music)
(Apollyon roaring) (dramatic intense music) - Where are you from? And where are you going? - I'm from the city of Destruction. I'm on my way to the Celestial city - I'm the prince of that city. And you belong to me. - Your wages are too great for any man, but the wages of sin is death. I've decided to seek a far greater path with greater rewards. - I don't want to lose any of my subjects. And since you complain about the wages, I promise to pay you handsomely. If you turn and go back to my country - I've given myself to the King of Kings. How can I possibly go back now? (Apollyon roaring)
(fire whooshing) - There are many who have
chosen to follow your King, but they come back to me. You would be wise to do the same (Apollyon roaring)
(fire whooshing) - I will never turn my back on him. - Think about what you're saying. - I prefer to be in his service. His way deserve more than I deserve - Those that follow him have
gone through great trials and tribulations. So they died painful
deaths and you stand there and tell me his service
is greater than mine. - The trials and tribulations are to test and strengthen our faith. And those that die will
receive great rewards when my Prince comes in his
glory with all his angel - To strength in your faith. You've already been unfaithful to him from the very beginning. - How!? - How have I been faithful to him? - Do you not remember
how you almost drowned in the swamp of despond. (grunting) Or how you wired off the path
to get rid of your burden. (fire burning roaring) Fear grips you often and still you're considering turning back - That's true and much more. But the Prince I serve and
love is ready to forgive when I repent of my sins. I will never turn my back on him. - Then I swear by the powers
of hell I will take your soul! Prepare to die! (Apollyon roaring) (Apollyon laughing) Victory is mine. (Apollyon groaning) (soft music) (wind whooshing) - Take courage faithful
warrior, I am helping hand. The Lord has sent me with with
leaves from the tree of life that will heal you and to give
you strength for the journey. - [Narrator] Now in my dream, I saw Christian felt strong than ever after being healed by a
leaf from the tree of life. He would need that spring as he approach the Valley of the Shadow of Death. A place more frightening
than even the great Apollyon. (suspenseful music)
(people screaming) - [Woman] Turn back! Turn back! Turn back! Turn back! - Wait! - If you value your
life just turn back now. - What did you see? Tell me what you saw? - Lehman's and creatures
from the pit of hell. - More terrifying than
you can ever imagine. - We saw souls screaming
in agony and pain. Turn back now while you
still have a chance. - I can't turn back now. This is the only way
to the Celestial city. - Well, don't say that we didn't warn you. (dramatic music) (people screaming) (dragons roaring) (birds squealing) (dragons roaring) (dramatic music)
(dragon roaring) - Thou I walk through the
valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil for thou at with me. Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table in
the presence of my enemies, my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life and I will dwell in the
house of the Lord forever. (people screaming)
(dragons squealing) - [Christian] Christian
quickly put as much distance between himself and the
Valley of the Shadow of Death as he could. He prayed for God to provide
a companion for the journey. That prayer was about to be answered. As Faithful, an old friend
from the city of Destruction was just up ahead. - Hey! Wait and I'll join you. - I can't, my life is in danger. The Avenger of Blood is after me. (bright music) (Christian grunts) (bouncy music)
(laughing) - Oh, Christian. - Faithful. Faithful. - It's so good to see you. I'm glad I caught up with you. I wanted to join you, but by
the time I made up my mind, you were way ahead of me. - Well, how long did you stick around before he decided to leave? - Until I couldn't stand it anymore? You wouldn't believe when
you started when you left. Everybody's talking about how the whole town is gonna be
consumed by fire from heaven. It's unbelievable. - I don't understand. Where is everyone? - They talk themselves out
of believing it would happen. In fact, they even criticized you for leaving in the first place. I knew in my heart it was true. I had to get out of there
before it was too late. - Well, here you are. Hey, we're out in the open. Let's get out of here. (soft music) - You know what happened to Pliable? - Oh, he's definitely worse off for leaving with you and turning back. He's ridiculed, wherever he goes. I used to have hope for him,
but now I'm not so sure. - I think he's pretty
much sealed his fate. - Why don't you tell
me about your journey? Well, after I made it out
of the swamp of despond nothing much happened to me until I came to the city gate. And there I met with Seductress Want. She was absolutely gorgeous. Drop dead gorgeous, beautiful. And she knew exactly what to say. - Thank God you were able
to walk away from that. - I'm not sure I did. I resisted her temptation
by remembering the proverb, "Her feet go down to death. Her steps
- [Both] Take, hold on hell." - Yeah. I had to get out of there. But I'll be honest with you. There are times that I find
myself thinking about her, wanting her. Lord knows I wish I'd never met her. - [Christian] Did you meet
anybody else in the Valley? - I met a guy by the
name of Adam the First from the town of Deceit. I asked him what he did for a living. And he told me experiencing
all of life's indulgences. He told me if I joined him, I would inherit his greatest estate and any indulgence I could
imagine would be mine. But that's not the best part. He even offered me his
three beautiful daughters in marriage. Most of the flesh, most of the
eyes and the pride of life. I almost took him up on his offer. It's too good to be true. And then as we were talking, the most amazing thing happened. I saw it written on his forehead, "Put off the old man and his deeds." It was like my eyes were open. No matter what this man told me, no matter how much he flattered me, I knew his goal was to get me to his house so that he could sell me
into a life of slavery. I had to get away from him. But when I tried to he reached down and grabbed a hold of me. I thought he was gonna rip
the flesh right off my arm. (birds chirping) Let's have a seat. Is that who I think it is. - [Evangelist] Peace my friend. - That's what, it is you. - Good to see you. - It has been quite some
time since we last met. Well, I'm happy to know
that you have had victory through many trials and
temptations on your journey. And remember there is a crown
of life laid up before you. So run that you may obtain it and don't give up no matter
what horrors you may face, and don't let anyone take your crown. You're still within gun side of the devil. Now above all, guard your heart against the
evil desires of the world. Because heart itself
is desperately wicked. Remember, you've got all the powers of heaven and earth on your side. - Now we know that you're a prophet. That you can see things in the future. - Can you tell us what we'll face? - Well, the words of the gospel tell us that we will face many tribulations before entering the kingdom of heaven. Each day brings its own trials as you both have already discovered But now, you are about to leave this wilderness and to a town that's full of great enemies that will do everything in
their power to kill you. One or both of you will be killed for your testimony of
our Lord, Jesus Christ. But be faithful even to death. And the King will give you a crown. Now he that will die,
although it'll be painful, you'll escape some of the
miseries in the journey ahead. Stay the course. God is faithful to the end. - [Narrator] Christian and
Faithful followed the path out of the wilderness and
into the town of Vanity Fair. It is so named because
all that is sold there or comes from there is
nothing more than vanity. It is a place filled with great sin. Whatever you desire is for sale. The lights, lusts and
pleasures of all forms. The merchants cried out for
them to buy their goods, but Christian and Faithful
would not buy anything. Instead they tried to share
the good news of the gospel, but the towns people grew
angry and turned on them. The mob surrounded them, stripped Christian of his armor and sword and put them in chains so
they can before the judge. (indistinct chatters) - What is your business here? - We are simple pilgrims on
a journey to our homeland, the Celestial city. (crowd laughing) - They wouldn't buy anything from us! - So I heard. And what is it that you wanna buy? - The truth. (crowd laughing) - And what is the truth. - Good people of Vanity, I know you are religious people. You seek and worship many gods. They god money. They god sex. The god of education. They god of science. But I'm here to talk to you about the God of heaven and earth. The God of all things,
the creator of all things, the God of truth. It is written that the
truth shall set you free. Jesus said, "That I am
the truth and the life. "That no man shall come to the
father, except through me." The gods you serve will only
lead you straight to hell. Renounce your sins and
serve our Lord Jesus, and in return, you will
be given everlasting life. - Liars! (indistinct chatters) - They haven't spoken the truth. - Order! Order in the courtroom! You have been charged with disturbing the
trade of this fine city. Inciting a riot and spreading
your poisonous opinions among the good people of this town. Which is strictly prohibited
by the laws of Beelzebub, our Prince. How do you plead? - I am a man of peace. (indistinct chatters)
- They're liars. - Any in this town who
may have taken the message of our gospel to heart they are on their way to a better life. - They mock us once more!
(indistinct chatters) - There will be order in this court. And you call yourself a man of peace. Call the first witness. - [Court Clerk] The People call Envy. (indistinct chatters) - Do you know this man? - Yes. He as evil as they come. He has no respect for
our Prince or our people. He tries to undermine our society by what he calls principles
of faith and holiness. He once said that Christianity and the customs of our town of Vanity are diametrically opposite
and could not be reconciled. And he not only condemns
all our excellent works, but us for doing that. - You may step down. - [Court Clerk] The people
call Superstition to the stand. (indistinct chatters) - Do you know this man? - No. No, I don't. Know what I want to know him. But I did hear him say that
our religion was worthless because we were still in our sins. And then we were dead. - I remember what he said.
(indistinct chatters) - That's all I have to say. - You may step down. Call the next witness. - [Court Clerk] The
people call, Pickthank. - Do you know this man? - Ah, yes. I have known this man
for a very long time. And he has said things that
should never be spoken. He has rowed against our
noble Prince Beelzebub and his honorable friend. Why? He's even said that if he had his way that they would all be run out of town. (indistinct chatters) But he did have some
wonderful things to say about you, Your Honor. Just the other day in confidence he told me that your
are an ungodly villain, unfit to be a judge. (indistinct chatters) - You are a traitor and heretic. You've heard the honest
testimony of these witnesses. - May I say a few words in my defense? - I should kill you where you stand. - Since we want to prove
that we are kind hearted, we'll listen to what you have to say. - First, I'd like to address
the statements of Mr. Envy. (indistinct chatters) All that I said was, any
law, rule, customary people that are clearly against the word of God. They're clearly against Christianity. If this is not true, please
show me how I am wrong and I will apologize. As to the accusations of Superstition, all I can say is this, any worship that is built
in the faith in oneself and not in the faith in God is worthless. And that's through the
words of Mr. Pickthank. What I said was the Prince of this town and those that serve him are
better fit to serve in hell than to serve this town or this country. - You have sealed your
fate with your own words. Burn them! - Listen, be strong.
- It's okay. - [Christian] Be strong. - Evangelist said this would happen. It's looks like I'll get
to the Celestial city before you do. I'll see you in the fatherly kingdom. - Be strong Faithful! - Where is your God now, Faithful. (indistinct chatters) (somber music) - You're next. (indistinct chatters) - Forgive them Father. They don't know what they do. - Christian, follow me. Hurry. (indistinct chatters) - [Narrator] In my dream
I saw that Faithful died giving testimony to the truth, but his testimony helped persuade others to make plans to begin their
journey to the Celestial city. I could hear Faithful riding across the sky in a fiery chariot. - Faithful. - [Narrator] He would be the first to enter the Gates of heaven. - We'll see you in the
Celestial city, friend. - [Narrator] Now in my
dream, I saw that Christian and his new companion Hopeful were moving quickly along the path until it became rocky
and hard on their feet. They were beginning to wonder if the path was ever going to get easier. (horse neighs) - Look at this. This is more like it. - [Hopeful] What if we
lose sight of the path? - It's not likely, runs in the same direction. Hello! Where does this path leads? - To the Celestial city. - Huh? Come on, we'll be fine. - [Narrator] Little did they know that the man they were following
was named Vain Confidence. He was never seen or heard from again. As evening fell, Christian and Hopeful look for a place to rest. (whooshing) - You are trespassing on my lands - Sorry.
- We're sorry. We didn't mean to- - Silence fools! You must come with me. - [Narrator] In my dream I
saw that the Giant Despair took Christian and
Hopeful to Doubting Castle where many away were Pilgrim
were never heard from again. The dungeon had a
horrible stench of death. Christian and hopeful were
given no food or water? The days went by like years. Their strength began to fade along with all hope of ever escaping. - My wife had a wonderful idea last night. She suggested that I give the two you your beating of a life time. - Please have mercy, just let us go. - Let you go? The two of you are going to die here. (Giant laughs)
(both groaning) (door opens) My wife, blessed kind heart, suggested that since misery
is all you'll receive killing yourselves is your only escape. So she has mercifully
provided you some options to help you end your worthless lives. Now, who is going first? - Sir, can't you just let us go? No one will know. (Giant groaning) (door opens) (door shuts) - Don't do it. - Why not? I'd rather strangle myself to death death than to facing what that demon has hold. - I agree. The death would be better
than living out little days we have left here. Remember that God is bigger
than any Giant we may face. We can get through this. - [Narrator] The two men
survived another day. They could barely move,
but they were alive. - I see you did not take my good advice. Now I shall make you wish
you were never been born. Tomorrow I shall tear you to pieces. (door opens)
(door shuts) - We should just put an end to it all. - Have you forgotten how bravely you battled
the mighty Apollyon and how God gave you the victory. How you face the ferocious beasts in the Valley of the Shadow of Death. Let us not forget what
God has done for us. Just wait on him and see what he will do. - Thanks. (people screaming) - All I can see is our
bodies torn to pieces. - I know what we should do. - What's that? - Pray. - That's a great idea. - Something we should
have done a long time ago. - [Narrator] Time was about to
run out for the two pilgrims. - [Giant's Wife] You said you
were gonna tear 'em to pieces. - Not now dear, I need time. - Lord Jesus, we just
thank you for your love and your faithfulness. You said when two or more
are gathered in your name you're with us. We thank you for your help and for hearing our prayers. - Heavenly Father, please help us find a
way to escape this place. (Christian coughing) This is the key called Promise
given to me at the cross. I'm sure it'll open up any
lock in this Doubting castle. (lock opens) - Christian. - [Giant] No, no, no, no! - Come on, come on. - No, no. No! - [Narrator] I saw that once Christian and Hopeful made it safely
back to the path to heaven. They made a sign to
prevent future pilgrims from falling into the
hands of Giant Despair. Then they journeyed onward
into the delectable mountains. - Good day. - Good day, sir. - Tell us who owns this place with such beautiful
mountains and pastures. - These mountains belong to Emmanuel, they're within sight of his city. The sheep for whom he lay down his life are also his. - Is the Celestial city far from here. - It's too far for some, but for those that really
want to go there, it is not. - Can you tell us what to
expect on the path to come? - It is safe for those
who are true to Emmanuel, but it is death for those who are not. - Well, this journey has
been long and arduous. - Yes. - Do you mind if we
stopped and rest for while? - The Lord of this place
told us not to forget to entertain strangers. You can find rest here, but first there was much to show you. This is the mountain called Error. You see those good men there. - Why have they not been buried? - They are examples. A warning to those that
have lost their way because of the false
teaching on the resurrection. Remember that Jesus has risen indeed. This is Caution mountain. There in the distance, you see them? They were pilgrims like yourselves. Did you notice bypass
mother on your journey? Unfortunately, they left the path and took the mantle to ease their journey. They were captured by Giant Despair. He blinded them, forcing
them to walk among the tombs thus fulfilling the proverb. "A man who strays from
the path of understanding "comes to rest in the
company of the dead." (people screaming) Watch yourselves. This is a shortcut to hell. This is a path for hypocrites like Esau who sold his birthright. Like Judas who sold his master? Or Alexander who blasphemed the gospel. - You mean everyone in
here was on their way to this Celestial city. - They believed it until
they ended up here. (people screaming) This is Clear hill. There, perhaps you can
see your heart's desire. the gates of the Celestial city where the King awaits his faithful. (soft music) - So beautiful - [Narrator] After refreshing themselves and spending some time with the shepherds talking about the Lord in his ways, Christian and Hopeful were
eager to continue the journey. - Oh, thanks for the map. - Oh, and don't forget
be aware of the flatters. They'll say anything to
lead you off the path. - And don't sleep on the intended ground. - Thank you for everything. - [Narrator] As I dreamed, I
saw the Christian and Hopeful were now in the country called Conceit. Where they were about to
meet an eager young man named Ignorance. Making his own way onto the path. - Good day friend. - Hey, - Where are you from? Where you going? - I'm from the country
over there, but I'm moving I'm going to the Celestial city. - Did you come through the Gate? Do you have one of these? - That scroll, that's cute. No, no. I didn't get one of those. - Well, you need one of
these to get into the city. - No I'll be fine. I've lived a good life. I prayed, I tithed. I give money to the poor. I even sacrificed
everything in the country just to go to the Celestial city. Yeah, they'll let me in. - Well, the journey starts at the Gate, without one of these
you're not gonna get in. - Hey, you know it doesn't
matter how good you are. They're not gonna let you in the city. - Yeah, we'll see. - Anyway it's nice here guys, so I'm gonna sit here for awhile. I'll meet you up ahead. - All right. It's good to talk with you. We'll meet you along the trail then. - Yeah. - I don't think he
hears what we're saying. - We've done all we can do. We shared the faith. We just need to give him
some time to think about it. (demons roaring) (dramatic music) - I know him. His name is Little Faith. - [Hopeful] Taking him to the
shortcut to hell aren't they? - Yeah. Huh? It looks Like the trail splits. We can go this way or that way. What do wanna do? - [Christian] I'm not sure. - Looks like the narrow
path is to the left. - I think it's the shiny one. - Friends what troubles you? - We were on our way to the Celestial city And we're just not sure
which path to take. - Indeed, the path may seem
confusing at this point. Perhaps it is not by
chance that we've met. 'Cause I've escorted many faithful Pilgrim on their journey to this Celestial city. Allow me the honor of
escorting you as well. - Sir, is it far from here? - No, it's closer than you think. - This is great. - We're almost there. - [Narrator] So Christian
and Hopeful followed the man. Who praise them for their
strength, wisdom, and faith for making it so far along the journey. As they walked, the two companions noticed that they were slowly turning
away from the Celestial city. - This doesn't seem right. - I got a feeling he's taking
us back the way we came from. - Excuse me. - Are you sure this is
the right direction? Hello?
(whooshing) (both grunting) I should have known the shepherd's told us to be aware of flatterers. Now I know what the proper
meant when it said that, "A man who flatters his neighbor prepares a net for his feet." - If only we would have looked at the map. I bet the answer was there all along. - [Narrator] Christian
Hopeful struggled for hours, but it was impossible to
free themselves from the net. They wondered if their
journey had come to an end. Then I saw in my dream
that a true shining one came to the rescue. The shining one chastise them for foolishly following the flatterer and not using the map that
the shepherds gave them. Then after further instruction,
he led Christian and Hopeful back to the path that leads to Heaven. - Is he still following us? - Might still be hope for him. - This is interesting. This gentleman's heading away
from this Celestial city. - We'd better be careful. It could be a flatter. - Good morning. I say you fellows, where
are you on your way to? - We're Pilgrims on our
way to the Celestial city. (laughs) - Oh, excuse me. It's been a long time since I
saw such poor ignorant fellows as yourselves, risking life and
limb for absolutely nothing. - Are you saying we're not
gonna be allowed into the city? - What I'm saying is
the city doesn't exist anywhere in the world. - Now we've both heard and believed that such a place does exist. - I heard about this glorious
place in my own country and like yourselves I
left everything behind in search of it. But after searching for it for many years I've come to the
realization, there is no city and there is no God. So I'm heading home to refresh myself with the pleasures of
the world so to speak. You should do the same. Chario! (continues laughing) - He was so close. - Come on. Nothing we can do for him now. - You're right. - [Narrator] Now in my
dream I saw the Christian and Hopefully come to a country where the air naturally made one drowsy, making it difficult for them to walk. (suspenseful music) - I'm so tired. I can fall still standing up. Can we go to that tree and
just sleep for just an hour? - No we gotta keep moving. - Half an hour? 30 minutes? - We gotta keep moving. - [Hopeful] I'm so tired. - I gotta keep moving. Wait, you remember how
the shepherds told us the enchanted ground? - Yeah. - Yeah, all this, this must be it. We can't fall asleep,
we gotta stay focused. Come on. We fall asleep now, we never wake up. - I'm glad you're with me. I sure would have fallen asleep
if it weren't meant for you. It's true what the proverb
says, "Two are better than one." - Than a good friend as you as well. Hey, hey, hey come on,
come, on, don't do this. You gotta stay awake. You're ready? Tell me, tell me why you decided to leave and to this Pilgrim journey? - You know what I decided
to care for my own soul? - That's great, that's better. - Come on, keep talking. - I was like everyone else at Vanity fair, enjoying all of his delight, but I knew that it would
have ultimately destroyed me. - Like what? - You name it, I loved it all. (indistinct chatters) Let's close the deal. I just couldn't get enough. I realized that death, the way that the children of disobedience. - So your sins convicted you? - I fought it. I didn't wanna see that my sin was so evil it was gonna drag me to hell. I tried to shake off the word of God and beauty of his truth. - Why couldn't you? - God just kept sending me signs. A man of God on the street - Friends I Plead with you, Jesus said, "Unless you repent, you
will surely perish." - I had a friend that died. And even if I died I would
face certain judgment. - Go check anyone's life. - I tried to change my ways. I ran from my sinful life
and my sinful friends. I became religious. I prayed, read the Bible. Even wept over my sins. I shared the truth. - Sounds like you found salvation. - That was a problem. I really didn't until I read in the Bible that you can't get right
with God through good works, but through a personal
relationship with Jesus Christ. Nothing else works. - So what'd you do then? - That's more like what Jesus did. - [Lord] Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and you shall be saved. - Lord, how can you
forgive a sinner like me? - [Lord] My grace is sufficient. - You don't understand, my sin is great. - [Lord] He who comes to
me will never be cast out. I will never ever reject him. - Even a sinner like me. I came to the world to save sinners. I'm the end of the law of righteousness to everyone that believes. I died for the sins of the world and rose again for the
justification of all. Above all I washed away
the sins of the world with my own blood. I am the mediator between God and man. - [Hopeful] And that's when
I fell in love with Jesus his people on his ways. - [Narrator] They kept themselves awake, talking about the Lord
Jesus and his great love. Before they knew it they
have made it safely across the enchanted ground. Christian and Hope will
now enter Beulah land where the air was sweet and pleasant. A place so close to the Celestial city that shining ones commonly one walk the beautiful gardens and vineyards. - Good day, sir. - Hello. - Tell me, who's gardens and
vineyards do these belong to? - They belong to the King. They're planted for his own delight and for pilgrims to gain
comfort for journey. So help yourselves to whatever you want. - Thanks - Thank you. - [Narrator] After Christian
and Hopeful enjoyed a few days of much needed food and rest, they were ready to continue their journey. It was a short walk to the Celestial river and they were very close
to the end of their journey and their heart's desire
to see the King himself. - There are only two more difficulties that stand between you
and the Celestial city. - Is there a boat or a bridge
that can take us across? - No. This is the only way for
you to reach the city. - Is the river deep? - That all depends on how much you trust the King of this place. - You ready, friend? - I'm ready. - [Narrator] The river became
deep and the water's rough. It was the evil ones last
attempt to stop them. Their thoughts turned past sins. - I'm not gonna make it! - I can see the shiny one at the gate. - They're waiting for you Hopeful. My sins are pulling me under. - Just remember that Jesus
cleansed you of your sin. - [Narrator] They felt unworthy to enter into the presence of the King. The thoughts, their past
sins seem to weigh them down pulling them under the rough waters. Christian's mind became clouded with doubt that he could not
remember a single promise that the Lord had given him. But Hopeful remembered that
Jesus made all things whole. His sins were washed away. He was a new creation. (suspenseful music) (Hopeful gasping) - I am sent to minister to those who are to inherit salvation. - Please, can you show my wife and children the way. - The King has heard your prayers. He has sent your wife and
children an invitation. - Thank you. (bright music) - [Narrator] Now, in my dream, I saw that Christian and Hopeful were greeted by shining
ones at the Gates of Heaven. They were ushered into the
presence of the Lord Jesus who greeted them with these words, "Well done, my good
and faithful servants." As I looked upon these things I looked back and saw ignorance being rowed across the river by Vain Hope with little difficulty. Once across the river, no
one was there to greet him at the Gates of the Celestial city. - Hello? Hello! - Where are you from? And what do you want? - I have eaten and drunk in
the presence of the King. He's taught in our streets. So here I am. - Where is your certificate? Have you no certificate? - Funny story, actually... Hey? Finally... (whooshing) What are you doing? Let go! I've seen the King. - [Narrator] Then I saw
that there was a way to hell even flowing the Gates of Heaven. Then I awoke and it was all, but a dream. (soft music) We are all on the same journey. Are you on the right path? (soft music) (orchestral music)
