Classification of Structures

in today's lesson we're going to learn how to classify different types of structures structures play a crucial role in our world they come in different forms each designed for specific purposes let's classify structures into three main categories solid structures frame structures and shell structures solid structures are like a block of wood or a brick they're uniform all the way through making them strong from all angles think of a massive Boulder or a concrete wall they're robust and unyielding capable of supporting heavy loads for instance the foundation of a building is a solid structure providing a stable base for the entire edifice frame structures are like skeletons they have a framework of beams columns and supports that work together to Bear the load picture a tall building or a bridge with visible beams and columns these components create a skeleton that distributes the weight efficiently a classic example is a skyscraper where the steel framework carries the weight of the entire building allowing it to reach Great Heights shell structures on the other hand are like hollowed out eggshells they're thin curved and can be incredibly strong domes are a perfect example of shell structures like the ones you find in sports stadiums or large Pavilions the curvature distributes forces evenly enabling the structure to cover vast areas with minimal material think of the roof of a sports arena its curved design allows it to span a large space without the need for extensive supports the classifier structure you need to consider its design and how it carries loads if it's solid throughout it falls under the category of solid structures if it features a framework of beams and columns it's a frame structure and if it's thin and curved forming a shell-like shape then it's a shell structure by understanding these classifications you gain a deeper appreciation for the diversity of structures around us whether it's the solid foundation of a building the skeletal frame of a skyscraper or the elegant curvature of a dome each structure is a testament to the Ingenuity of Engineering in our everyday lives
