Introduction

  • Importance of organization in biological systems.
  • Epithelial tissue maintains order in the body, similar to organizing students in a lunchroom.

Types of Epithelial Tissue

  1. Proper Epithelium
    • Covers and lines the outer and inner body.
  2. Glandular Epithelium
    • Forms glands, secretes hormones and substances.

Functions of Primary Epithelium

  • Protection: Covers the body's surfaces and lines cavities.
  • Organization: Partitions body into separate, connected units.
  • Interaction: Acts as a barrier between internal and external environments.

Structure of Epithelial Tissue

  • Avascular: No blood supply; relies on connective tissue.
  • Cell Shapes:
    • Squamous: Flat, scale-like, easy for materials to move across.
    • Cuboidal: Cube-shaped, absorb nutrients, produce secretions.
    • Columnar: Tall, thick, cushion underlying tissues.

Correlation of Structure and Function

  • Squamous cells: Ideal for absorption/transportation; found in lungs/blood vessels.
  • Cuboidal/Columnar cells: Larger for secretion, e.g., stomach lining.

Layering of Epithelial Tissue

  • Simple Epithelium: Single layer.
  • Stratified Epithelium: Multiple layers.
  • Pseudostratified Epithelium: Appears layered, but single layer.

Classification by Shape and Layering

  • Example: Simple squamous epithelium (lungs), stratified cuboidal (ducts).

Epithelial Cell Polarity

  • Apical Side: Exposed to outside or cavity.
  • Basal Side: Attached to basement membrane and connective tissue.
  • Selective Permeability: Allows absorption, filtration, and excretion.

Glandular Epithelium

  • Endocrine Glands: Secrete hormones into bloodstream.
  • Exocrine Glands: Secrete into ducts leading outside body or into tube.
    • Examples: Sweat, saliva, mucus, stomach acid, milk.
