Pro Tools Grid Mode Overview

Jul 30, 2025

Overview

This note explains how grid mode works in Pro Tools, including grid alignment, time scale selection, and practical applications for editing and arranging audio or MIDI clips.

Grid Mode Functionality

  • In grid mode, all timeline actions are aligned to the chosen grid.
  • The grid value can be adjusted from the edit window for flexible editing.
  • Users can select the grid time scale, such as bars and beats, minutes and seconds, or time code, to match their workflow.
  • The grid can also be set to follow clips and markers within the session.

Time Scale and Subdivision

  • The "Follow Main Timescale" option ensures the grid time scale automatically matches the session's main counter selection.
  • Choosing "bars and beats" enables music-oriented editing, while other scales suit different project types.
  • Users can select specific subdivisions (e.g., 1 bar, 1/8 note, 1/16 note) to match the precision required for their edits.

Practical Applications

  • Setting the grid to 1 bar is useful for arranging or modifying the overall music structure.
  • Using 1/8 or 1/16 note subdivisions allows for precise adjustments of specific MIDI notes or events.
