hello and welcome to a run-through of unit 3.3 the rebellion of herod the wake here's just a reminder of the key question for this unit did william mainly use force or more subtle methods to subdue the english we now find ourselves in 1070 the hurrying of the north has just finished one of the worst acts of violence ever to be carried out against the english people but even so there is one last act of defiance by the anglo-saxons against william led by herod the wake herod has become something of a cult hero the brave anglo-saxon terribly wronged by the normans fighting for revenge against all the odds the story most of which is more legend than fact goes that herod had been in exile and returned to his house to find that his brother had been murdered by the normans his severed head displayed above the front door heroined storms inside and massacred single-handedly many of the normans there herowood then leads an uprising in the fens in east anglia an area at the time which was mainly marshland and often flooded this meant that the town of ely was mostly an island surrounded by marshes and very very hard for william to attack by this time the danes had returned now asbjorn was joined by his brother king swain and also edwin and morkar once again went to aid the rebels although it seems likely only morkar actually arrived in ely herrera raided nearby peterborough abbey to rescue the treasure hidden there from norman hands in fact he seems to have used it to buy the support of king swain so how did william respond well as you can see his first tactic once again was to pay the danes to go home it would work before and it worked again then he takes his army to east anglia he also has a fleet of ships off the coast which cut off supplies to ely and he manages to get his troops through the fens through the marshes with the help of some local monks there are various legends and stories told about this there's one in which william has a witch helping him and she curses her word in fact the story goes that she blew the curses out of her backside charming whatever the truth of the matter herowood's forces finally surrender and william is incredibly harsh to the rebels those that he actually allows to go free he may ensures that his soldiers cut their hands off and put their eyes out before he does so herrera himself escaped but this was the last serious anglo-saxon rebellion against william's rule of course he wasn't to know that so just to make completely sure he marches north to scotland in search of edgar the eighth ling and his supporters he uses his classic tactics of hurrying and violence to force king malcolm to submit to him the elusive edgar the eighth ling manages to escape once again it seems to end up in northern europe but he never again mounts another uprising against the king
