if you're someone who's scared and terrified of chemistry and are getting consistent bad grades at it that was me up until a month before my exams and I still managed to somehow get an A star so this is exactly how I did it hi guys my name is Moon and this is a step-by-step guide of how you can go from really bad grades in chemistry to an a star so for me it was kind of a little bit gradual the first time I got a C in chemistry was in my second year year of igcc in my first term of second year that was in December of 2023 and in my mock I got a B which was in March of 2024 in my finals I got an A star and that was in May but fair not even in mock I was still very much clueless I had no idea what I was doing I was very scared of chemistry chemistry is one of those actually not even one of those subjects it was definitely the one subject that I was very clueless at I did not like chemistry I was scared of it I didn't understand anything and the only reason that I took it was because it was mandatory at my school I didn't want to take it but I have I was forced to so I had no choice and even after marks I was still very much clueless about chemistry and I didn't really know what was going on in the exam at all but then I was like I really need to get good marks in my my finals there were some trials and errors and some study methods that worked for me that did not and these are the ones that did and I'm going to give you a stepbystep guide through all of it without further Ado this is my stepbystep guide of how you can Ace your Chemistry exam so the first step is to get your hands on the syllabus so igtc which is the curriculum that I took you can find the syllabus online go on Google and search up igcc chemistry syllabus but if you're not taking igcs and the syllabus is not available online you can ask your chemistry teacher for it second step once you have the syllabus I would recommend you to print it out for me I like to have something tangible in my hand to use but you can also keep it on your laptop or your iPad as long as you can annotate and highlight it and what we are going to do is called the traffic light method I mentioned it a little bit in my last video but in this one we're going to dive a little bit deeper into it so to explain the traffic light method I did not create it or anything but it's definitely definitely the one technique that actually saved my chemistry exam so what you're going to do is get the syllabus start from the very beginning and highlight with green for the ones that you absolutely absolutely understand if you don't get something if you don't understand it even a little bit then don't light yourself highlight it with yellow cuz yellow is the ones that you need revision on it could be things that you understand but tend to forget basically things that you need revision on and then we have the last color red which my paper was full of cuz I didn't understand a huge chunk of the syllabus okay so third step now that you have identified the things that you understand the things that you don't you will be taking one chapter at a time so we're going to start with the chapter that you find easiest the chapter that is mostly filled with greens and yellows the reason that you do this is because you want to feel like you got it you want to feel like you know what you're doing and I've heard people say do the hardest task first do the hardest chapter first but for me that didn't really work because that just further demotivated me so I like to start with the easiest one so that I feel like I've done something it motivates me to do even more since you don't need to look at the green Parts start with the parts that you highlighted with yellow you already understand these you just need a little bit of revision on them so just read the syllabus and refresh your mind a little bit and go through that specific part in that chapter in your textbook if you need to so in the syllabus there are command words like identify or state so for those yellow Parts if it says State then State the answer out loud or if it says Identify then list the things that is asking you to once you've done the revision for it so that you are absolutely sure that youve we've got this part once you're done doing that we're going to leave it at that but do not ignore it totally we're not done yet since those are the things that you usually tend to forget or make mistakes at obviously just by doing that you're not going to just magically have it memorized totally in your brain so at night before you sleep you're going to hold that syllabus and then read through those yellow parts that you highlighted and annotate it on I don't know why I've read this before might also know of this fact but it is scientifically proven that you remember something more you read through it put it in your brain and then sleep after that every single night the more you do this the more you're going to remember those yellow parts so once you feel like you've actually mastered those yellow parts then you can select them group them like this and then take them with a green highlighter we're done with the third step fourth step which is the real deal is to tackle those stranger danger RED parts so these are the parts that you have absolutely idea your clueless about these parts and we're going to take them one at a time so now that you're looking at the red Parts just a little reminder don't think about or focus on the other Chapters at all put those out of your mind so that you're at ease when you're looking at this chapter so onto actually tackling those red Parts you're going to have your syllabus and then your textbook and open up your textbook to that page and actually read it read read the textbook so for each chapter I would say start from the beginning of that chapter I'm is all about understanding the basics you're scared of chemistry I was scared of chemistry because I didn't get the basics so start from the beginning of each chapter so for this part you have to put in a little bit of effort if you want that ASR you have to put in that effort so read the textbook and then there's Google it's free so if you have any questions just search up on Google you can get as detailed as you want for me I liked to use YouTube and YouTube actually was very very helpful so I'm going to mention some YouTube channels along with the chapters that I watched them for so I'm going to list them according to my igcc syllabus but I think these are pretty General so for the states of mat and bonding I watched cognit I'm looking at my phone by the way cuz I made a list so for sto matry I watched the organic chemistry tror since he's really good at calculations stomry is basically all the calculations the moles the avocad constant and all that for chemical energetics and reactions I watched again Cognito cogo's videos are really Visual and I think I'm a visual learner so it helps me understand since I can see all the bonds in those little circles and everything next is redog I was really bad at redog I did not understand redock I was like what are these numbers they're very confusing for me so I'm very thankful to this teacher the channel is called Tyler dwit and I can't recommend this enough this redo series is honestly the best redox explanations that I've ever seen the next one is acid base and salt for this chapter there's these anion tests cat ion tests and honestly for these salt preparation stuff I feel like watching the Practical experiments helped me a lot table in the igcs syllabus of all the cat anio tests that you need to know and I just looked at it and searched each Test on YouTube and I found practical experiments of those tests and most of those videos that I found helpful I noticed were from cam jangle and talking about cam jungle the next one is Metal's chapter and I honestly the only videos of metal extraction iron extraction aluminium extraction that I actually understood from where from cam jungle those two videos actually saved me so for metal extractions definitely watch cam jungle next one is environmental chemistry so this is water fertilizers and air and honestly for this I just used the syllabus for environmental chemistry is mostly memorization these are facts that you need to know to be able to answer those straightforward questions for example the percentage of nitrogen in air for this part I would recommend learning it with a study partner or your friend because you can quiz each other on this since this is mostly memorization next is organic chemistry for me I didn't really struggle with Organic chemistry since I understood it the first time I was taught about it at school but it was also heavily because I read the textbook before I learned about it at school so for organic chemistry I feel like it's very straightforward use your textbook as long as you know about alanes you know about everything else if you need help I would recommend of course the organic chemistry tutor and the last one on my syllabus is experimental chemistry so for this for igcs it's mostly going to be in the Practical paper so you actually need to understand how these experim experiments work so I would recommend you to just go on YouTube and search up those experiments one by one and watch them so that you actually know how to do those experiments or explain about them okay so that was step four and now on to step five in this step you're going to need past papers I recommend printing them out what you're going to do with those past papers is you're going to take one past paper from a recent year look for questions relating to the chapter that you're focusing on you're not going to do the whole past paper yet for now we're only going to focus on the chapter that you did since you've already learned that chapter you should be able to answer those questions in the past papers once you're done with that find the marking scheme and then check your answers the thing is you do pass papers because you don't know how the questions are structured or what the examiners want you also check with the mark scham so that you can identify your mistakes and for some answer you might not exactly have them in your textbook so the mark scheme is basically like a cheat sheet of all the answers you need and you're going to repeat this exact process with every single chapter in your syllabus one advantage of using the syllabus is that you won't take [Music] in you won't take in all the information in textbook and you only learn the things that you actually need to know to answer this exam step six now that you have tackled all those chapters you're going to now combine all of them so what you're going to do is to print out those p rers and then answer them from beginning to end by doing this you will also have answered those questions twice if there are any questions that you make mistakes in in the first time and you learned from you will especially notice that the second time you answer the whole past paper and if you keep making the same mistakes then you know which parts to focus on so that is exactly how I improved my marks in chemistry and how you can do follow this guide and take it one step at a time and you're bound to get that a star so that's it for this video I hope you found it helpful and I am wishing you all the best in your exams hope you get all e Stars thank you for watching and I hope you'll be here to watch my videos in the future as well bye-bye
