Devotional Lecture Notes

Shalom. How are you all? We will begin our Devotional today. But before that, just like the amazing thing we always do, I’ll read the testimonies. My team told me… Just before we start, more than 3000 viewers are already waiting on line. Wow, Praise The Lord. It’s an honor to serve people who are hungry and thirsty for the Lord. Let them keep coming. Welcome. Let me read the previous testimonies we’ve received since last week. This one is from Olivia in Surabaya. Shalom Pastor Philip. I had a pain in my shoulder for few weeks. Every time I woke up, I couldn’t move my arm Last Sunday on 5th of July, I joined the online Sunday service in GMS. At that time Pastor Phillip was praying for healing for someone with shoulder pain. When you told us to stretch our hands on the screen, I followed the instruction. Praise the Lord, the next day, on Monday I heard “a click” sound from my shoulder. I could move my arm and the pain was gone. Praise The Lord. Wil Ang. Few weeks ago, when we should’ve paid for our son’s tuition fee. with our financial condition, we couldn’t do the payment. So we informed our son to be prepared for the worst scenario. That week, Pastor Phillip stated that: There was a young man whose dad could not send any funds anymore. God would bless your father because of your prayers. We said amen to this promise, but, that week nothing happened. And we encouraged our son to make a proposal to the university for tuition installments. We did not get a response from the university that week. It was to the point that our son could not join the class anymore. Then my husband instructed my son to tell this matter to his boss. Since he could not just abandon his responsibilities at work, if he should leave He needed to hand over his responsibilities if need so. On Tuesday morning during our devotional time, Suddenly, our son sent us a note that the tuition was paid in full. Apparently, one of his bosses paid for him. We remembered what God stated through Pastor Phillip, Don’t have hopes in man, but in God alone. A person whose jaw was in pain, now he is healed by Lord Jesus. I said Amen to that and had faith that it is for me. Because, few days ago, my jaw was in pain for no clear reason. The pain had made me difficult to eat and to talk. Since the pain has reached my ears and head when I moved my jaw. After the devotional, I could not feel the pain anymore. Moreover, I could eat some thick crunchy crackers and it tasted good! Thank you Lord Jesus, Thank you Pastor Phillip. Lord Jesus Blesses you. Hallelujah! I am really glad to hear these kinds of testimony one by one. I feel like I want to keep on reading them. Please keep sending them to us! I believe you will have more testimonies after today’s session. Because you will get healed and get help from God. and will get breakthroughs from the power of His Spirit. We are only seconds away to have viewers from Instagram Live. Praise The LORD, have your Bible ready. Like what I’ve promised, today I will talk about God’s promise. Before that, I want to remind you. If you missed the previous Devotion, that entitled the function of The Bible. It’s a crucial topic since I was explaining about … the benefit of Bible for our daily life. It’s not only for theologians, but also for all of us. How to make the Bible your everything. If you missed that, you can see the recording on Youtube. Not only that, last week during the online Sunday service of my church... I shared a sermon, not a long message but… an important message for your business and work … that are facing struggles or transition in this new season. It’s a series of proverbs of life, entitled business and work acceleration. It’s all available on Youtube. Therefore, subscribe to our channel. However, I’m not looking for more subscribers, but … It’s for you to receive more nutrition from God’s word. Don’t forget to subscribe so you won’t miss out. My heart has a burden for you even if I haven’t met you … but in my prayers, I can sense your burden in my heart. Christ loves you. God wants to fill you with eternal and useful things. Let’s open the Bible to Joshua 14 Today’s title is “I believe in Your promise” How can we believe in God’s promises? Let’s learn from a person in the Bible. An amazing man besides Joshua, he was Caleb. The “Allotment for Caleb” is title for Joshua 14:6-15 Take notes, let’s study God’s word. Your note will become useful references... the next time you review them and … you will get new things in … applying them for our lives. I believe in Your promise. Joshua 14:6, “Now the people of Judah approached Joshua at Gilgal, and Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to Joshua…” They both had aged. They had past their prime years. This was after entering Canaan and... collapsing the wall of Jericho into pieces. “You know what the LORD said to Moses the man of God at Kadesh Barnea about you and me.” So Caleb talked to Joshua. They were old friends. They were once spies. They were the only ones who trusted God, while others did not. For that reason, their generation did not make it to the promised land. Only the younger generation did, those who were 20 years below. Those who were just kids. In today’s context the school children. Joshua and Caleb were the only ones from the older generation to enter the land, since they believed. In Kadesh-Barnea Moses said, Because you have been faithful, the promise of God is yours. This is what he mentioned in verse 6b. Caleb said, “You know what the LORD said to Moses the man of God at Kadesh Barnea About you and me. I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the LORD sent me from Kadesh Barnea to explore the land. And I brought him back a report according to my convictions, but my fellow Israelites who went up with me made the hearts of the people melt in fear. I, however, followed the LORD my God wholeheartedly So on that day Moses swore to me, ‘The land on which your feet have walked will be your inheritance and that of your children forever, because you have followed the LORD my God wholeheartedly.’” I stop on verse 9. We will continue reading more verses later. Let’s take a deeper look on verse 6b. “You know what the LORD said to Moses the man of God at Kadesh Barnea about you and me.” By this time Moses had died. Caleb was referring to a promise … that was given decades ago. It was an old promise. But apparently God’s promise never ages. People ages, and so does the earth. Right? Human, the heaven and earth may pass. But God’s promise is always renewed. It does not mean that the promise is just heard today, No, It might be an old promise, but its power is always renewed. There is no expiry date for God’s promise except if it’s already being fulfilled. That is why, don’t give up! If God has promised, then He never lies. If He said something but nothing’s happened yet, It means the time has not come yet. It doesn’t mean God is unfaithful or changed His mind about it. You and I have to learn to think like Caleb. In this verse, Caleb was already old. The first time he heard the promise, he was still 40 years old. Moses promised in God’s name, God commanded Moses: "Tell Caleb, He will get Hebron. This part of the promised land, will belong to you. Even your descendants will occupy it.” This man had a strong memory. I am not sure whether he had become senile or not. But for sure, if one day we become senile, make sure to always remember this, The promises of God. Trust me You can forget even your name Don't forget His Word One thing that has to stay in our long-term memory is the Word of God. Let’s pray it doesn’t happen, but even if someone may have Alzheimer, Dementia or become senile, It could happen to anyone. By saying this, I never hope for it to happen. I am not having negative thoughts But, even if “My flesh and my heart may fail …” even if it happens to me… Only If … I’m not wishing it to happen, l rebuke it from happening. Yet If, it should happen, I’d bargain with God. for one thing that I want to remember forever. I might forget certain events… or could have a short-term memory loss … I’d pray to God should that thing happen to me, I would ask God to send His multitude of angels to guard… this one memory box which contains God’s word. Not to be wiped away from me. One thing we must always remember, it’s God’s word. I believe in Your promises, let us learn from Caleb son of Jephunneh. How did he keep his trust in God’s promises? Write it down in your notes. Firstly to remember God’s Word. God’s word has to be remembered, therefore, we have to note it down. Do not forget God’s word. Believing in God’s promises is the course outline The smaller steps, the short, medium and long-term course is … to remember God’s word at all time. Don’t forget His promises. When He said a word, don’t ever forget about it. Caleb had aged yet he still remembered what God said. Even though he did not hear it directly from God. It was a second hand Rhema, Nevertheless, the source was still the same; it was God Himself. So it’s still Rhema from God. He heard it from Moses. Despite not hearing it directly from God, He believed in his heart. I believe in Your promise. Your promise will not wither. He claimed the promise after 45 years have passed. He reminded his buddy, his friend, his fellow spies, as they entered Canaan Only two from their generation entered the promise land. He reminded Joshua, God’s chosen leader at the time. In today’ context, the president of Israel at that time. He said: “hey brother, don’t you remember what Uncle Moses once said; about me, about us?” I have never forgotten what God said about me, when Moses prayed for you and me. He opened his notebook. To him… God’s word was not dust covered. Don’t let God’s promises in your life become obsolete. Don’t let God’s promises in your life get moldy. Just because it has not been fulfilled, then you forget about it ... or get disappointed, Don’t! The only treasure that can’t be taken or stolen from us is… His promises Hold it tight. Write it down, this first point for … believing in God’s promise; is to remember His promises. Don’t ever forget about it. I still remember what God has promised me… Yesterday, last month, last year, a decade ago. Some of them have been fulfilled, I am grateful. Then comes new promises. Now let’s take a look on verse 10. “Now then, just as the LORD promised, he has kept me alive for forty-five years since the time he said this to Moses.” It’s simply amazing. He did not wait for 4.5 years, but 45 years. “while Israel moved about in the wilderness. “ In verse 10, Hold on to your seatbelts everybody, A senior is speaking here. He was 40 years old when Moses proclaimed this promise. Since then he had been waiting for 45 years. Then how old was Caleb when this event occurred? He was 85 years old. Let’s read further... “So here I am today, eighty-five years old I am still as strong today as the day Moses sent me out; I’m just as vigorous to go out to battle now as I was then” Wow In verse 11, we could see that how fierce is this elderly man. However, I believe Caleb son of Jephunneh was a kind man. When both of them were about to be stoned for …. believing in God while the rest of the Israelites complained to God. Since they all feared the Anakites giants… both Joshua and Caleb were very patient. They did not resort to violence when they were in that situation, No! They were not quick tempered. But when talking about God’s word, he was passionate. In regards to God’s Promises, he wouldn’t even want to negotiate His conviction was solid. This old man stood up and said: “I am still as strong as I was in my 40s. Even though I am 85 years old now. I am still as strong today as the day Moses sent me out; “ Give Hebron to me. As if, Caleb wanted to make sure his friend would not doubt So he said to Joshua: “Relax brother, no worries! I still have the same strength as I was in my 40s” Was it true? Were his muscles still that strong? Let me give you a sneak-peak. Later in the story, when he took Hebron, he would need a backup. He wasn’t like Samson who could kill a thousand man … with a donkey’s jawbone in one strike. while the Philistines had weaponries from metals. Caleb was not like that. He did not have superhero powers. He was not like David’s mighty man… who could single handedly defend a piece of land,… leaving thousands of Philistines dead on the ground. Let me give you a bit more information about Caleb. I could not read other passages due to time constraint, … but later passages in the book of Joshua and Judges, … his son-in-law, Othniel, went to a war with Him, They worked together and conquered the land as a team. But what inspire the tribe of Caleb son of Jephunne; the tribe of Judah; The thing that built up the boldness and courage of Judah was the faith of Caleb. Had not for the faith of this old man, … the younger generation would not have courage. They too would tremble in fear of the Anakites. Who were The Anakites? The tribe has extinct today. They were known for their size. They were taller than the NBA players. Shaquille O'Neal, Yao Ming, and so on … are dwarfs compared to them. Their height were more or less like Goliath, around 3 meters. When I went to Israel with the congregations, we went to museum in a city where … some clothing was found by archeologist. Clothing that belongs to the tribes. They were huge Just looking at the clothing I could imagine, how huge they were. Imagine, how this old man had inspired the younger generation to conquer the city. What’s the secret? I don’t think he physically looked young, What’s the secret of his youthful passion? He was 85 and yet felt as strong as he was 40. Some people are so happy in Christ, that… they do not realize how much time has passed. There is a verse… in the Bible that states; God made the person’s heart so joyful that he forgot to count his days. Even though there is another verse that commands us, To number our days wisely. Yet some people live so freely. Living daily without worry. They don’t think about death… or about sicknesses, or about calamities. Since their eyes were set on Christ. They just walk so securely, not that they live free-suffering life on earth. Yet they have courage. even suffering becomes bearable when they have joy in their heart,… they have strength. For “the joy of the Lord is our strength.” Caleb in my opinion, still ages physically. But, his spiritual heart never age. My second point on… how to believe in God’s promise? First is to remember God’s word. Yet how can we have faith, if we lost His Word? If we forgot about it, misplaced it or got deleted somehow. We do not know where we kept them, since we don’t put it in our notes. We were wondering whether there was such statement coming from God Did God say that to me? What could happen if we do not store the Word in our memory? First: to remember God’s word. Second lesson that we can learn from Caleb is; To renew our heart. This is the key. His heart didn’t age. God’s word is like a mustard seed. Our hearts are like the pots. If the pots are broken, the seeds would spill. When the birds snatched them, … It’s not because the Words are not powerful. The seeds are innocent, for they are divine. It’s our fault to not keeping it properly. Also if God’s word is like the wine, then our hearts are like the wineskins. So if the Word is like a new wine poured into old wineskin… then the wineskins would rip and the wine would be wasted. Why some of God’s words are not fulfilled in our life? Surely God can’t be manipulated. We cannot just do A to Z then expecting God to fulfill this and that. It doesn’t work that way. God has His own timings. Everything is beautiful in its time. God is sovereign in fulfilling His promises. They will definitely be fulfilled; may it be according to our expectations or not … for sure it will exceed all expectation, or may it happen … in unexpected ways that’s in His sovereign will. Often times, if we want to be honest here. if we evaluate and have a self-reflection, sometimes … if God’s words aren’t fulfilled yet, the cause may not be God’s timing, but… because His Word has been kept inside a heart that is obsolete to God’s promises. A person with no expectations … Que sera sera; Whatever will be, will be … may not be a person manipulating God, but as … he is not claiming anything before God … not holding on to His Word strongly …. not even praying for God’s promises to be fulfilled. Prayer is not by means urging God to fulfill His promises, No! Prayer is an act of guarding our hearts. Those who pray may not necessarily hasten God’s timing. Those who pray are guarding their hearts and their life. Those who pray are preparing themselves so that when fulfillment comes… they will be ready to receive the promises. They will be considered qualified since … they don’t wither. God’s Word cannot wither, but the recipients could… if they get disappointed. Therefore, Jesus said to His disciples; “Blessed are you who are not disappointed because of me.” You are blessed. Guard your hearts! We don’t need to guard the Word. God’s Word is divine. Guard our hearts. It is our wineskins that need renewal. Caleb was not great in his physical strength. Physically, he surely ages. But what he was referring when he said: “I am still as strong as I was long time ago”, was his faith. He kept his heart fresh in following God. His heart did not waver, nor doubt. Don’t just remember God’s word, but maintain your level of trust … in God’s word. You have to set your hearts to a certain altitude. The oxygen level of our faith should be kept … to certain standards. Don’t let our faith suffocate or get dehydrated… by what we believe. That is what Caleb meant … when he said: “I am still strong today although I am 85 years old … because I’ve been guarding my heart daily that’s why… since I was 40 until I’m old now, I still have the same strong heart … especially in… are you ready… BELIEVING!” His heart; his wineskin was renewed daily. No wonder, if his faith was challenged in a tug of war … without question, God’s promise should be fulfilled in this old man’s life… since he never gave up. He firmly stood in God’s word, his solid stand on the Word, had made his faith unshaken. That is why Jesus was surprised to see one woman… Jesus never said: "Wow, look at her, no one in Israel has A que sera sera attitude like her. Look at her “it is what it is” attitude”” God never praises such attitude. Instead, God said: " I have not found such great faith even in Israel." Jesus had told the Centurion, "I could not go there" "It is okay"… as when Jesus was about to go to him, the centurion said: "there is no need to come, just say the word, and my servant will be healed." That is why Jesus said “I have not found such great faith even in Israel.” He praised an Italian centurion. Not a Jew who are His chosen people. In another story, He praised a Syrophoenician woman. She was from Syria. An Arab woman was praised by God. He stated: "In all Israel, I could not find such faith." In this case, Jesus had rejected the woman. He said “it is not right to take the children’s bread to the dogs” If I was treated that way, Definitely, I would be offended. All of us have our own ego right? Imagine if a pastor said something like that to you? God was testing her. Would she be humble? Would she give up? A person with que sera sera attitude will say, “If it is God’s will, it is what it is.” But this woman, persisted, she had a fighting spirit. She’s not fighting God, but she fought her flesh. Her own doubt and worries. Don’t let fear of disappointment keep you from trying. Don’t let your fear keep you from believing. Thinking maybe … God might not fulfill my expectations. Don’t! Renew your hearts in believing, in having faith, strengthen your spiritual muscles! The Syrophoenician woman was praised by God. when she replied Jesus: "Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table, right?" That includes crumbs from the children’s table. Crumbs that fell could be licked by the dogs. Jesus was surprised. Although He knew how she would have replied, Jesus was amazed, that is why he proclaimed, "I have not found such faith in Israel." I am sure why God gave Hebron to this old man. Hebron was the toughest city to conquer in the days of Joshua. From all other regions and cities that were difficult to conquer, Hebron was the hardest one. The city was the hard-core trouble. Yet God gave this city to this old man, since God was amazed with his faith. How he had kept his heart for 45 years. The spiritual muscle of his faith stayed strong and young. It’s amazing. Renew your hearts. Don’t give up easily. Don’t give up after a month of trying. Don’t give up even after a year of trying. Caleb didn’t give up even after 45 years had passed. Verse 12, " Now give me this hill country that the LORD promised me that day. You yourself heard then that the Anakites were there…” The Anakites were surely not a pleasant foe to face. “…and that the cities were great and fortified. It MAYBE that the LORD will be with me …” (NKJV) See how, he didn’t have a perfect faith. Even though he was bold, his faith still resided in a fragile human body. Nevertheless, he still had faith. That’s the art of faith. “It MAYBE that the LORD will be with me and I shall be able to drive them out .. as the LORD said.” (NKJV) This old man had not lost his mind nor did he ignore his capabilities. He knew he was old but he never let his old age or his years of waiting… became reasons for him to throw in the towel. Verse 13, " Then Joshua blessed Caleb son of Jephunneh, and gave him Hebron as his inheritance. " Today, let me play the role of Joshua who bless you ... Spiritual Calebs of today, to receive what God has said to you. May it be fulfilled in your life in Spirit and in Truth. Verse 14 "So Hebron has belonged to Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite ever since, because he followed the LORD, the God of Israel, wholeheartedly. The last verse and lesson of the day, in verse 15. " Hebron used to be called Kiriath Arba after Arba … who was the greatest man among the Anakites.” The Anakites were huge. If we see Europeans in general, they are very tall. Although Americans are bigger, … but the Netherlands for instance are usually taller. It’s the same thing applied to the Anakites. This man was the tallest among the tall. The biggest man among the giants. " Arba who was the greatest man among the Anakites." Here’s the core of our problems … prophetically speaking. " Then the land had rest from war." verse 15 The third point, after we remember God’s word and renew hearts, then… we need to walk in faith. Caleb said, ”Now, give it to me! Give that mountain to me.” Then in between verse 14 and 15, there was a war that was not recorded. Because somehow the people of Arba were conquered by God’s chosen people. " Then the land had rest from war." The war happened in between verse 14 and 15. A step of faith was made after Caleb gave his statement in verse 12, " Now give me this hill country that the LORD promised me that day." Then he took his sword, assembled his team and walked in faith. So how can we have faith in God’s promise? First to remember God’s word. Second to renew our hearts. Third to walk in faith. God’s promises … Let me add something. There are three phases for God’s promises. There are short term promises, medium term promises, and long-term promises, There are promises that are fulfilled almost immediately. There are some promises that need a brief waiting time. That’s medium-term promises, this may take some years Although for human, years waiting time are not considered brief right? but we should not get disappointed with God. Try to look back. If God has helped us or anyone around us, It means God is going to help you once more. It means God is still able to answer your prayer in the future. How come? Don’t we have a living God? If He is alive, this means His help and answers are not by heavenly luck, but… because of His characters. If our God is alive, His character remains. Moreover, the Bible many times has stated clearly that: For Jesus our living God does not change. He was, is and is to come. “Jesus is the same yesterday and today and forevermore” If we are doubting God, let’s check His character. If a person steals and he has kleptomania … after staying in prison or get caught by the police for a while … the next way, or maybe the next month, he would more likely to do it again. Because it is his nature, his characters and he may have a disorder. Our God has no such traits. His natures are glorious, for He is love and He doesn’t change. If He has helped your neighbors, your families and even yourselves. Perhaps, it happened last year, last month or yesterday. Have a positive suspicion on God’s nature. It’s not merely a heavenly luck, it’s not a coincidence or about you having good fortune. You're being lucky. It is because in His character, He is helping you. If it’s in His characters, then He will do it again. It’s going to happen in the future. Therefore, the short and medium term promises of God, should make us realize that God is great. If God has not helped yet, … It does not mean He is not going to help us. It won’t be long, since His characters never change. Sooner or later He will help us. Then there is a long term promises of God. How long will it be? It may be until the day we die, if Jesus has’t come yet. God is still faithful regardless. The existence of Israel is the proof of this. God still protects them until this day. Despite their rejections, God still loves them anyway. For God is fulfilling His covenants with their forefathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Long after they took their last breath, The descendants of David still become the apple of His eyes. There are promises that might not be fulfilled in our lifetime. It might be fulfilled long after we are gone. if Jesus has’t come yet. Since the fulfilment of the promises take a long time, longer than our life time; this long-term promise will turn into covenant. It doesn’t mean God is late in fulfilling it, No! It simply means some promises will only be fulfilled in our next generations. Therefore, don’t live recklessly today. I am sharing to you one secret today. I’ve been wondering, maybe one of the reasons why I became a pastor today, is because of my great grandmother. She was a Pentecostal’s intercessor. She was illiterate, but… her prayers were fierce. Like Timothy, who was chosen because of his grandma and mother. Maybe It was not because of my own deeds that I became a pastor today. Maybe because God heard a prayer from an old lady long time ago … and He fulfills it in her next lineage. From my great grandmother to me, it took 4 generation. I know today, some or a few of God’s the promises for us will only be fulfilled in the future generations. it may not be limited to our biological lineage, but … It may include those who are connected to our covenants as well. They would also receive the “after glow” of God’s glory in our life. Be strong, be faithful. Trust in His promises. Just like Caleb son of Jephunneh Be such a person today. I believe in Your Promises. Let’s renew our hearts. Let’s go It’s not a “maybe” but for certain it will be answered! I believe in Your Promises. Let’s stand strong. Try to remember, what God has promised to you. Don’t let those promises be taken away from you Don’t throw it away. I believe in Your promises! Let’s lift up our hands together Receive His promises and the fulfilments Be strong my friends, be strong! Stretch your hands forward, to our point of contact in faith. There is power in agreement. The place of agreement is the place of blessing. Lord, I pray for everyone. From today on, Give them sensitive ears ... Lay your hands on your ears, like this. Give sensitivity to these ears to hear what the Bible says. So we may be able to hear and correctly interpret the voice of the Holy Spirit. Stretch your hands forward. Thank you, LORD. Bless every need that they have. LORD, restore every heart that has lost hope, discouraged and disappointed I pray that they may rise again. I pray that everyone may feel… the strength of faith that penetrates through their spirit, body and soul. Jesus starting from today take them in an adventure of fulfilled promises. Today, may all doubts be taken away … Those who have thrown the towel and have given up, May Jesus’ blood washes them and revive them that … they may rise with joy and pride in having a great God who does not change. For His characters remains yesterday, today and forevermore. God showed me a person who has planned to shut down his factory. Continue doing … what you have planned But know this, God will intervene along the way. I prophecy, in Jesus’ name, your business will not fall. On the contrary, you will need extra hours to work and you hire more staffs. Something is going to happen in August. In the next month a glimpse of hope, a turning point is coming in the name of Jesus I see another person, this time a very skinny woman. She is so thin as if she is suffering anorexia. I want to pray for you. You are not healthy at the moment. You vomit a lot and whatever diseases you are having… I know something is wrong with your soul. It’s the spirit of rejection. I rebuke that spirit away in the name of Jesus, get out from this woman! From now on, after this prayer… Your body will become healthier, better and you will gain more weight. Surely this prayer may not apply to all women, since most women like to be slim, right? But for this particular lady, she needs to gain weight. The moment I am praying, in Jesus name, there is a creative miracle. It’s not a healing miracle, but a miracle of creation. You have gained more weight, since ….
