Lecture Notes on Integers

Introduction

  • Instructor: Khushboo
  • Topic: Integers
  • Session Structure:
    • BODMAS
    • Multiplication on Number Line
    • Multiplication without Number Line
    • Division of Integers

BODMAS

  • BODMAS stands for:
    • B: Brackets
    • O: Order
    • D: Division
    • M: Multiplication
    • A: Addition
    • S: Subtraction
  • Importance: Indicates the correct order of operations in arithmetic.

Multiplication on Number Line

  • Concept: Using a number line to visualize multiplication.
  • Example: 2 + 2 + 2 can be expressed as 2 x 3 = 6.
  • Frog Example:
    • When using a boy on the number line, movement is slow.
    • The frog hops to demonstrate faster multiplication.
  • For positive integers, move away from 0; for negative integers, move toward the negative side.

Examples of Multiplication on a Number Line

  1. 2 x 4: Moves towards the positive side.
  2. -4 x 2: Moves towards the negative side, resulting in -8.
  3. -3 x 3: Moves on the negative side, resulting in -9.
  4. -1 x 3: Results in -3.

Multiplication without Number Line

  • Sign Rules:
    • Same signs (positive/positive or negative/negative) result in a positive product.
    • Different signs result in a negative product.
  • Examples:
    • 5 x -6 = -30
    • -5 x -6 = 30 (cancelling negatives)

Division of Integers

  • Concept: Division is the process of splitting a large group into smaller groups such that each group has an equal number of items.
  • Examples:
    • 12 divided by 3 = 4 (each friend gets 4 apples).
    • Repeated subtraction method can also represent division.
  • Sign Rules:
    • Same signs yield a positive result; different signs yield a negative result.

Summary of Key Points

  • BODMAS is used for the order of operations.
  • Multiplication and division rules based on signs (same vs different).
  • Visualization techniques can help understand integer operations.

Homework

  • Solve the given expression and choose the correct option.
  • Upcoming session: Part 2 of integers on April 25th at 5 PM.
