greetings to our senior high school learners specifically for our students and philosophy and for our viewers who continue to to view and to learn from our video lessons now before we start with our new topic or new lesson have your a question for us to analyze or to ponder with have you ever wondered about how nothing seems to last forever see for example objects get worn out until they can't be used anymore food and drinks expire trends become outdated after some time and the cycle of being born growing up getting sick and dying one important reality about human condition is that we are temporal beings or beings oriented toward death we cannot deny the fact that death exists in our world now only in reflecting on the reality of death can we begin to explore and understand the meaning of our existence so welcome to our last topic for this course and that is human persons as oriented towards their impending death we move on to lesson number 15 of our course introduction to the philosophy of the human person To start with our topic, let us answer this question. How does the reality of death define our lives? The spirit being immaterial will continue to exist even after the body has passed.
Death is defined as commonly understood as the end of bodily functions which signals the end of a person's life. It also refers to the separation of the body and the spirit. The spirit being material is bound by loss of time and space and is subject to growth, death, and decay.
How does the reality of death define our lives? Everything that came in this universe will eventually come to an end. When we are born into human life, we grow and age, and we eventually die. This paradox defines the uniqueness of human existence.
We are also beings who are moving towards our impending death. This makes a person's life limited in time. Some people rely on anti-aging treatments and products.
Or some even put great importance to speed and efficiency. And some also observe what we call as hashtag YOLO or you only live once. Now, I want...
you to i want also to emphasize that aside from observing the fact of the yolo we should also observe yogo or hashtag you only you also grow old or yago you also grow old meaning we should also be responsible and prudent on making our decisions in life now to continue we must embrace the fact that death is an integral part of our life Acceptance of our temporality can give us a clearer purpose and focus on our activities. Now, how should I live my life before it finally ends? Accepting the fact that we have a limited time in this world allows us to determine the course of our life. This comes now the concept of self-determination.
Self-determination is the capacity to choose and act for oneself. A person can still exercise freedom in choosing how to face the reality of death in their lives. We can choose to spend our lives doing good and reasonable things.
The person is the author and protagonist who determines the development and conclusion of his or her story. So therefore, when we accept the reality that we have a limited time in this world, it allows us to determine the course. or direction of our own life next is how should i live my life before it finally ends to continue with uh to answer this question what is the end of this life we have this particular two concept the first concept is what we call it as terminus terminus which means the full stop or end of a line for them life ends and nothing follows for them they considered that the final destination and the second concept is what we call as telos telos means goal purpose or fulfillment for the point of view of telos that is not the goal of life for them when you say that death is considered as a part of our life integral on our life and therefore when you for example encounter that it is expected that you were that you have able to reach your goal your purpose in life and you have lived a fulfilled life before you died man is put on this earth to live a meaningful life to be virtuous and achieve excellence we can look at two experiences which make us reflect on the meaning of life and that is happiness and suffering Let's answer this question, what makes you happy?
I guess now all of us are yearning for happiness, especially now in this trying time, especially now of this pandemic, we all want to be happy. Now, for ancient Greek philosophers, they considered happiness as an achievement and must be gained by living a productive and moral life. Happiness is a whole life satisfaction that is not just a matter of time.
based on our evaluation of our overall life experiences happiness is also a state of being and not merely an emotional experience or a chosen mental attitude now we have here goods or sources of happiness so we have here three sources or goods or three sources of happiness the first one is what we called as the noble good this is uh this is known as pursued for its own sake it is considered as good in itself like for example love friendship affection concern loyalty this is considered as a noble or genuine good because we all pursue for these things and this particular thing is that this particular thing is uh is that you cannot buy you cannot buy those things because those things is given freely and these are the things that we yearn and that we want to strive in our life love friendship the gift of having a family loyalty honesty faithfulness when we say useful good okay the second type of good is the useful good this one is considered good so long as it serves as a means to an end its goodness is found only from what it can provide like for example money so to simply explain useful good useful good refers to the material material things for example your cell phone for example your bank the amount of money deposited on on your bank account for example or the amount of money you have on your gcash all of those are considered as useful good your luck tap is considered as a useful good and the third one is what we call as pleasurable good this is good so long as it provides some form of pleasure though is that it does not have to be physical so say for example is netflix subscription or being tapped on your on the mobile legends so these are example of what we call as pleasurable pleasurable goods Now, remember, I want you to emphasize this concept. Real happiness can be found in more permanent and meaningful things. So, we can simply assume that among these three types of good, it is the noble good that we should aspire and strive the most. Let's focus now on this concept.
Why do we suffer? Suffering takes place when we patiently endure unpleasantness, discomfort, and pain. Now, it may come from the following.
Number one is physical suffering. It includes discomfort, hunger, distress, and pain. It talks on the physical level of suffering. While the mental suffering focuses on the psychological aspect.
Like, for example, when you experience depression. anxiety being fear loneliness and grief remember that sufferings are necessary without it we are unable to grow and improve we improve and grow as a person because of all the trials because of all the adversities that we are facing and that we are dealing this is this is all part of the paradox of the human life Remember that difficulties are here not without a reason. Now, how do happiness, suffering, and death can give meaning to your life?
The pursuit of happiness requires that we go through the effort to achieve it. Efforts are often marked by difficulties and discouragement. The reality of death means that our existence is unique and that we will not always get another chance to do the things we want and dislike.
Therefore, we should not easily give up on the pursuit of good things. If we are willing to suffer through adversities, we become better persons in the process. Reflecting on the reality of death enables us to think on how we can best live.
a meaningful life. We can strive to leave a legacy either in the form of inheritance, a reputation, or significant achievement. Because of our freedom, how we choose to live our lives is entirely up to us. We are the author of our own life.
And we should always remember that life is a gift given to each person. And it is important to turn this life into a gift for others as well. And that ends our discussion for today.
Now before we end with our discussion, we will have first... a short assessment to assess your understanding on our topic for today so we have here five items to answer number one it refers to the end of bodily functions which signals the end of a person's life and the separation of the body and the soul a death b temporal letter c reincarnation or d freedom The correct answer is letter A, death. We discussed the topic concerning doing philosophy. We discussed the concept of philosophical tools and processes. Remember our discussion that we should all acquire holistic thinking, critical thinking, and we should always apply philosophical reflection as part of our everyday life.
We also discussed the importance of methods of philosophizing. That includes the discipline of epistemology and applying logical reasoning in order for us to avoid fallacies in reasoning. We also discussed the human person as an embodied spirit and the human person's role in our environment.
Human person is considered as the steward of our environment. For the second half of our course, we also discussed freedom of the human person. That means our freedom has always had its limitation. Therefore, we should be responsible on using our freedom we also discuss intersubjectivity or the way we relate or interact with other people it is a must for us to establish the i though relationship to achieve what we call as authentic dialogue we also discuss human person in society wherein we explore that we have this important role in our society and lastly for our topic earlier we discussed human persons as oriented towards their impending death as as a temporal being we should live a meaningful and fulfilled life by making the correct and right decisions in life and we should always remember that sufferings and happiness is part of our existence in this world we discussed that we also emphasize for our for our whole discussion that a person will reflect on their daily experiences from a holistic point of view so i wish that after everything that we have discussed you will have this habit of reflecting and you have this skill of applying holistic perspective on analyzing things or issues or situations i hope also students that you would be able to apply critical and analytical thinking skills to the different affairs of your daily life you would become a human person who has the capacity for transcendence working to become a better versions of yourself a student or a individual who is truthful environment friendly and service oriented a human person who is responsible in making decisions in life you are also actively committed to the development of a more humane society And lastly, I hope that after this entire semester, you would be able to articulate your own philosophy in life.
