hello everyone welcome to my presentation concerning the impact of technology and second language learning technological advances are touching k-12 education in ways never before imagined today students are unlike any of the educational system has ever experienced members of this generation are most often referred to as digital natives or the net generation because they have been immersed in technology since birth the saturation of technology in students lives has produced an entirely different type of student shaping the way they think learn and experience the world around them the focus of this presentation is to highlight how technology has impacted second language learning and the current trends affecting second language learning today second language acquisition theory consists of two fundamental components that language is both acquired and learned according to the second language acquisition theory the acquisition of any language is a subconscious process very similar to the process children undergo when they acquire their first language the learn system is a conscious process that produces understanding about the language in other words grammar rules it is important to understand how language is acquired and learned to be able to effectively integrate technology into the lesson design technology has reshaped the way second language learners process learn and converse in the target language and it plays an essential role in language acquisition key points to note are its impact on oral language acquisition how digital documentation affects second language learning improved collaboration and the ability to differentiate instruction let's look at each of these a little more closely oral language acquisition with technological devices students were able to record themselves speaking as many times as they wanted until they were satisfied with their articulation the ability to listen to their own recordings identify their mistakes and correct their imperfections is a valuable form of self-assessment it affords students the opportunities to take risks technologies also means for students to listen to native speakers in french-speaking videos and apps exposure to varying accents and vocabulary provides a great resource for language learners with the use of mobile devices in french immersion classrooms students demonstrated an improve ability to speak to listen to and to comprehend french this led to better language acquisition digital documentation provides valuable feedback to teachers of second language learners new technologies have made it possible for teachers and learners to revisit the gathered documentation and to engage in a dialogue and interpretation process about it it permits educators and students to revisit their learning process through the process of documentation and revisiting students become the ethnographers of their own learning process in a study by perlerin digital documentation could be employed as a formative assessment tool for all four domains of language learning reading writing listening and speaking reading is one aspect of second language learning that teachers use to assess language acquisition students record themselves reading in the target language capturing the reading process through digital documentation teachers were able to observe their mistakes as well as the strategies they were using to improve their reading the recording documented the nonverbal language behaviors and actions of the students through their reading journey the ability to digitally document early literacy development in the target language makes the reading process visible to teachers digital technologies were also valuable when writing in the target language with mobile devices students could map out their writing process by first recording their ideas about how to organize their writing pilerin states that students could produce a coherent piece of writing as the audio recording permitted them to hear and visualize their thinking process with the use of technological devices pillar noted that oral language including listening and speaking become interval in the revisiting process listening and speaking become important skills as students listen to their own recording and reflect about their learning process as an active listener students could identify what was good about their work as well as participate in meaningful conversations about their ongoing work in order to co-assist its quality and to reflect on how they could improve it it is evident that digital documentation is an effective assessment tool that provides teachers with valuable evaluative data in all domains of second language learning the emergence of technology in the classroom has provided opportunities for elevated levels of collaboration among students video conferencing instant messaging and collaborative apps permits second language learners to collaborate in the target language in ways never before imagined technology has opened the doors to the world technology is a powerful educational tool for struggling and overachieving students it affords them the opportunity to take control of their learning process since students could explore a number of different applications and interact with the language at their own pace struggling students displayed less stress and anxiety and their confidence increased as they were able to edit and re-edit their work furthermore story creation apps allow students to express themselves orally taking away the anxiety related to written tasks technology allows for inclusion in an unintrusive manner let's now take a look at how current technological trends are influencing second language learning for young learners technology is a natural way of interacting and it plays an important role in how they make sense of the world around them current trends in technology produce new opportunities for second language learners and access to authentic experiences some current trends that seem to be especially beneficial in language learning are gamification virtual reality and language learning apps and websites the millennial generation are tech savvy and are used to blogging gaming and social networking therefore based on this type of learner second language educators are looking to gamification to deliver content and improve language acquisition gamification is defined by cap as using game-based mechanics aesthetics and game thinking to engage people motivate action promote learning and solve problems for example minecraft a digital pixelated video game can be used to create characters and tell stories in the target language furthermore students can be asked to create visualizations by building scenes recreating the setting and illustrating main ideas within minecraft of a story or text that they write to demonstrate their reading comprehension game-based learning is a motivational instructional tool for second language learners according to schofner the popularization of virtual reality headsets has rocketed the concept of virtual language learning into a new frontier second life and modernly are two apps that has had a monumental impact in the virtual world of language learning virtual worlds are very interactive creating an immersive environment which contextualizes students language practice virtual reality permits students to stimulate real life scenarios in which they can converse and create an authentic experience albeit virtual language learning apps are another educational tool used to promote second language learning mobile learning apps provide multiple channels and modalities to practice language skills there is a host of language learning apps and websites available as pictured here to motivate and engage second language learners these apps do come with their own limitations in many cases they focus heavily on vocabulary identification in building and grammatical practice while they aid in basic conversational dialogue they do not produce fluent speakers in the target language through careful instructional design new technologies can be integrated into language learning modules or curricula to enhance language acquisition skills with the integration of technology in today's classrooms some things to consider are the infrastructure and technical support mobile technology deployment and the impact on educators and instructional design 21st century education system requires broad and intensive use of technology and a strong technology infrastructure with this in mind an important consideration of the impact of technology and education are the ongoing costs associated with the implementation of technology in a school-wide district for example licenses equipment training etc an issue that many teachers face in their classrooms is limited access to technology for students learning through technology depends critically on learners access to and use of technology with only a small number of students able to avail of mobile devices student engagement diminishes for a complete technology integration in today's classroom every child needs access to a device with the recent inception of the number of web-based applications and gaming online platforms being implemented to aid instruction into current educational pedagogy teachers are finding themselves in the new teaching and learning paradigm the modern technologies are demanding that teachers don't have to use these technologies in their teaching hence these new technologies increase the teachers training needs the acquisition of knowledge and skills through technology means that we need different didactics and more specifically digital didactics in second language learning technology plays a vital part of language acquisition technology dramatically extends and changes the breadth and depth of exposure that learners can have with the target language and interactive events in which they have the opportunity for language focus technology and education is an incessant cycle just as teachers get proficient with one new technology in their classroom a more present day application will introduce itself into the realm of the educational world instructional designers must understand how second language acquisition happens this can then be used as a basis for decisions that go into the design and evaluation of technology for language learning thus the instructional design of the lesson will need to be modified to include the latest digital trends to infiltrate our classrooms in a 21st century education system technology must be used comprehensively and purposefully to support students in mastering the full range of what they need to learn core subjects 21st century themes and 21st century skills thank you for listening
