ETAP Usage Overview

Introduction

  • Goal: Teach how to use ETAP in 5 minutes.

Starting a Project

  • Options:
    • Create a brand new project.
    • Open an existing project.

Building a Diagram

  • Methods to build:
    • From scratch using toolbars.
    • Use a template with pre-built reference designs.
    • Add custom reference designs (e.g., MCC lineups, substations, wind farm collector systems).
  • Ability to delete elements and restore from the recycle bin.

Quick Model Example

  • Components added:
    • Relay
    • CT (Current Transformer)
    • Transformer (5 MBA)
    • Cable
    • Bus
    • Two motors.
  • Diagram automatically formats according to spacing rules.
  • Input missing information (e.g., impedance from ANSI/IEC).
  • Cable sizing and derating functions available.

Running Calculations

  • Perform Power Flow Calculation:
    • Results displayed directly on the diagram.
    • Units can be toggled (kilowatt, volts, amps, etc.).
  • Short Circuit Calculation:
    • Error checking for missing data (double-click error for quick fix).
    • Fault analysis capabilities (fault a specific bus).

TCC Curve (Time-Current Characteristics)

  • Process:
    • Input CT ratio and configure relay output.
    • Add a breaker without breaking connections; snap it inline.
    • Select relay model from a validated library (e.g., Schneider relay).
  • Setting adjustments:
    • Change time dial and pickup, updates reflected across the database.
  • Test protection by dragging and dropping the short circuit arrow.

Arc Flash Study

  • Steps:
    • Select a bus for fault analysis.
    • Run arc flash study (safety checks on PPE requirements).
  • Output:
    • Arcing current and arc flash energy results.
    • Access to detailed sequence of operations and arc flash analyzer.
    • Ability to print labels, work permits, and data sheets.

Conclusion

  • Summary:
    • Demonstrated easy building of diagrams and calculations in ETAP from load flow to arc flash within five minutes.
