EAP TV Exclusive with Kenny Black

Yo what's up people you're about to enjoy my exclusive time on EAP TV for those that are meeting me for the first time I'm Motoloni Kenny Pita my friends call me Kenny Black my fans call me Kenny Black I'm a music comedian MC extraordinaire producer artist and entertainer Okay, I started comedy in 2008. It's been over a decade now, and I can say that God has been faithful. Being a professional stand-up music comedian, my acceptance in the industry is still something that surprises me because, you know, being the youngest as of the time that I started, you know, doing big things. Big shout-out to all my senior colleagues, everyone who showed me love.

I'm absolutely nothing. without all my senior colleagues, everyone who showed me love, gave me platforms, you know, showed me that I could do it. And it's, there were challenges along the way, but those challenges, those disadvantages became advantages. for me and if I start talking about my career as a comedian ah we write two books and we'll not end it but all I can say is that from flaming to fame God has been faithful and I'm truly God's great ambassador it was hard get writing my own jokes you know writing jokes for the first time you know at the point where you need to start writing jokes and i didn't understand what building a set looks like until i had to you know when i started i was listening to other comedians and remixing their jokes. So it gave me a lot of ideas on how to write my own jokes.

And I can tell that the comedy industry is an industry of... love. You know, I know a lot of comedians that called me and said, you know what, why don't you do it this way, why don't you do it that way, why don't you try and do it this other way. And those things helped me, shaped me and made me a better person, you know.

So I would say one of the challenges I faced was writing my own jokes myself without anyone being there for me to say, okay, write it like this, you know. It was, you have to learn as you move. And those disadvantages became advantage for me. because I had just two jokes, two of my own jokes, and repeating those two jokes for a long time.

Even me, I got tired of the jokes, you understand. But right now, I have a basket of jokes. I have an archive of jokes that I've not even said.

I have jokes that I've forgotten of, my own jokes. I have jokes that I said just once. So I would say writing, the process of writing was a challenge for me. Another challenge for me was getting money to go to shows. Right now, I'm going to...

has been faithful right now i'm not there yet but i can say that i don't look like what i've been through okay if you see my throwback i totally look like but i don't look like what i've been through um getting funds to go for events but right now if you don't pay me i will not come so you're getting it was a big challenge for me and starting at a very young age you know having that small stature was a challenge people didn't take me serious when i said i was when i said i was when i said i'm a comedian People will look at you and be like, you're the small boy. Because I was always going to the big platform to perform. All those big stages, the Monsanto Center, different comedy shows. Well, look at us today. I'm that small boy doing big things.

So all the disadvantages, all the challenges that I faced, turned out to be the things that make Scally Black an amazing company. It is better to write jokes, but at the same time, you can't write jokes. cannot be a professional stand-up comedian without spontaneity with spontaneity you save your jokes you understand there are so many times i'm on stage and my favorite moments are the things that i did not plan that i say the things that i don't did i don't rehearse you know the spontaneous moment we all enjoy that more you know so When you're spontaneous, it helps you save jokes.

It helps you be creative. In fact, as a spontaneous comedian, there are some things that will happen to you on stage. There are some crazy moments, there are some surprise moments, there are some spontaneous moments that will happen and will make you go back home and build jokes on. So yes, it's good to write jokes, but at the same time, It's good to be spontaneous.

A spontaneous comedian will last long in the industry. Who is my godfather? God is my godfather. God is my godfather through the likes of Alibaba Baba, AY, Bhaskar, Bovee, You, MC Abed, the list is long. So is it bad to repeat jokes?

Oh, I heard this guy say this somewhere and I'm hearing him saying this again. You serve you the waka too much. Stay one place. No, they go everywhere.

But that was on a lighter note. It is good to repeat jokes. fact there is no comedian in this world that do not repeat jokes is where it is bad is to repeat the same joke in the same place i cannot come i cannot perform to you guys today with these jokes come back and tell you guys the same joke.

Because I said it in a cool tale, doesn't mean that the people that are in Muson should not hear the jokes. In fact, in this part of the world, you need to repeat your jokes to own them. Because if you say it once and another person takes it and says it on a big platform, that person automatically becomes the owner of the jokes.

And the more you repeat your jokes, the more it gets better. I don't know about any other person, but for me, For me, the more I tell my jokes, the more it gets better. I cannot say a joke once. I just leave it. The more I say it, the more things start adding.

The more I realize that, okay, this did not work here. If I'm going to say it somewhere else, I need to subtract this and add this. Oh, I like the way I said it here. This is the way I would say it. You say it to the point where the joke now becomes, somebody can wake you up from the dream and you can say the joke anytime.

But the fact that I... Like I said before, I cannot deprive Lekon of hearing this joke because Bola heard it. You understand? So it is good.

I like to repeat my jokes as long as I'm not saying it to the same person. Do I think the Nigerians are doing the best that they could to take the committee to the people in diaspora? I think they are.

I think we are. You know, a lot of us want that international recognition. We want to show the world that there are so many Nigerian stories, there are so many African stories that we want to share with the world. And look at what basket is doing with Russell Peters.

Basket Mart is presently on tour. I don't know when you get to see this, but Basket Mart is on tour. I just got back from tour. AY is on tour.

And when we do this, we let the world know that we are not just Nigerian comedians, we are comedians. Wherever we can be. I can go to Kigali, I can go to Uganda, I can go to America, I can go to London, I can go to Qatar and perform.

I am a comedian and I can tell you our story and you will laugh. Right now, there was a show that happened in Cameroon that I think the highlight of the show were Nigerian comedians. It shows that we are getting international recognition, even if it's within Africa for now. We are getting that international recognition. Basketball did Wembley, SSC Arena, you understand?

Alibabababa also did the Indigo Otsu. There were British people there. Right now, a lot of people want to hear about our culture.

They want to hear. I did a joke one time in America. in London and I said, oh, it's you guys in London, but we also in Nigeria, we have our own London, even if it's Osapa London. A lot of people came to Nigeria and want to know where Osapa London is.

They want to know what is, why? So there's a place in Nigeria called London, you understand? So the stories that we tell people will make them want to come to Nigeria and visit our culture. Nigeria is not all that bad.

There's so many people that want to come to Nigeria and see a lot of things and be like, oh, I heard that this guy talked about having our own Brain Bola here in Nigeria. If you just try to buy a snack or beef from somebody in traffic, the lights can't move and the guy never calls money. I don't care if it's from Ireland to Maryland, that guy will run after you and take his money.

That's the only symbol, you understand? People want to experience that kind of thing. And I remember when one rapper, one American artist came to Nigeria, was it Kadibi or...

Yeah, it was Kadibi, and she saw somebody put oranges on her head with a tray without hands, and she was moving, and she was like, how can you do that? So... It is how we tell our stories that matters and we are coming.

America, London, Qatar, Nigerian comedians are coming. What may, I might not really know what makes someone the professional comedian, but what I can say from my own perspective, comedy is like a ministry. Comedy is like you being a pastor, you need to know if you are called. It is you by yourself that know you are a professional comedian or not. And comedy is the fastest exam you can ever write.

Because it's that exam that you are writing. Before you finish writing that exam, you are seeing the results. In the jokes. What makes someone a professional comedian?

I really... I've never even thought about that before. What makes you a professional comedian?

Because me, I did not discover myself. People saw the comedian in me and said that, Bro. I think you can do this. And I think what can make someone a professional comedian is the ability to be spontaneous, one.

It's the ability to, you know, create humor out of things that are not normal. Create humor out of everything in your environment. Everything that you can see. For now, I just hope I tried.

I never really thought about what makes someone a professional comedian. I think it's good to try something. You know, it's always good to try something.

Like me now, I'm trying to see if I can do skits right now. So if a skit maker feels like, I want to try stand-up comedy, there's no harm in trying. But when you know that this is not working for you, focus on your craft, you understand? It's...

There's no harm in trying, you understand? For those that don't even know, Brain Jota was a professional stand-up comedian. before I started doing skits. You understand? It was even part of the Alibabababa Spontaneity competition.

So I think you try to do skit and realize that, okay, this is my calling. I was doing music. I tried comedy and now comedy is my thing. So I don't think there's any army trying to want to do this.

A stand-up comedian can try to do skit. A skit maker can try to do comedy. stand-up comedy and see if it works so if you're out there you're a skip maker you feel like okay maybe i should try i have a feeling that i want to try and do try it and if it doesn't work for you stick to what makes you stick to what works for you i think everybody is trying to build a community and build an army That we succeed them, you know. People are trying, just like you have record label, like you know, what Don Jazzy has done, what EME has done.

It's that kind of thing, that's the kind of thing that's happening in the comedy space. And I think it's not all that bad. have its own disadvantage but i don't think it's all that bad you know when people have people that you know ah i have like three events today i can't go but i have people that i can call and say you know what you quickly go for this event i don't have to go outside and start looking for who is available. I have people that I can say that, you know.

I have an army of comedians when, for example, like the House of the Stalker, if the Stalker is moving, he can say, you know what, I know you want to pay me for this event, but if you need opening acts in this, at your event, before I perform, I have my boys, I have my people that can perform before me. And I've had, I see, I see a lot of clients come to me and be like, ah, Kenny Black, can you recommend the comedian for us, can you recommend this one for us, which I do. But having your own army, you guys can move as a group, but sometimes it can have its own disadvantage.

You know, a lot of people can be like, oh, no, he don't get in carcass. You understand, he don't send me, you understand, it is my boys first. But it can have its own disadvantage.

So if you look at it, you understand that it's not all that bad. It's not all that bad. Everybody can have you can they can decide to have an army.

and say, you know, when I move, I want these guys to move with me, and I want to show them to the world, just like Don Jazzy showcasing a lot of artists on his record label to the world. I think I'll start with the worst thing. I can't remember any worst experience that I can never forget because God loves me so much that he turns my worst experience into lessons.

And it makes them look like, you know what, you needed to go through this to be able to get this. One worst experience. I honestly can't remember any worst experience.

Any worst experience. But one of my... my best experience so far is to see that music comedy now has got a category, you know. Now, back in those days, there was no, they used to just put all of us together, Comedian of the Year and this, but to see that music comedy now have a category in the award show, for example, like the Humor Awards, people are now nominating the best music comedian, and it gives me so much joy to see that they had work.

The consistency is paying off. A lot of people now want to do music comedy because of the sacrifice and the things that we've done, especially the things that I have done. It gives me so much joy. It just encourages me to do more. It is an experience that I can never forget in my life.

And people see me, and people say, Kenny Black. In fact, I'll give you one very good example. There was a lady who was going to go for an operation, and they said that they need to inject a pill. to sleep she said before they inject her to sleep that because they said the population was going to be 50 50 and she said she just want to listen to my comedy before she goes into theater see they can take it off when she falls asleep but that's how she relax and you never can tell the impact you you you have in people's life with what you do and when i heard that story it was one experience that i still today i still who did my heart like people love me so much that they feel like my comedy kills depression my comedy kills um my comedy makes them stronger and that's an experience i can never forget i'm not pastor paul i do have that's on the road but my experience he passed tbs why am i a gospel comedian the truth is i'm not a gospel comedian i'm not a circular comedian we don't drive gospel cars we We don't laugh gospel laugh.

We laugh. We tell jokes. You can tell that I'm a family brand comedian.

Everybody wants to listen to me from kids, adult, mommy, daddy, grandma, grandpa. You can invite me to your church. You can invite me to your club. You can invite me to anywhere. I'm just that healthy comedian.

So I'm not a gospel comedian. I'm not a circular comedian. Yes, my comedy brings good news.

Good. gospel, that's fine. But I can say I'm a healthy comedian. And you know, when I mean healthy, you understand what I mean.

Who would be Kevin Hart? Kevin Hart is an amazing comedian, but I think that my uniqueness would stand for me. Kevin Hart would do his, I would do mine.

He's either a Thai or a black queen. If you want to do comedy in general and do music or do music comedy, it's the same thing. It's the same advice.

Know that this is what you are born to do. Know that this is it. Don't come into the industry because you feel like, ah, I just want people to know me. I just want people to know me.

No. Come into the industry. Do comedy because you want to put smiles on people's faces.

You want to be responsible for people's happiness. You want to see people happy. because you are talking you want to see you want to give people value you want it to be you want it to be mutual you want to have a mutual relationship you want to be able to deliver content and people deliver laughter don't just do comedy because you feel like ah you don't see the ovation with this one they get i'm with them i want to have it no do it because ah i believe that it is something that i am born to do have passion for it put god first believe in yourself Don't try and be like Kenny Black.

Don't try and be like Apororo. Don't try and be like Kevin Sapp or Just2Funny or Stalker. Be you. You can have them as mentors. But be you.

Be unique. And for those that are doing comedy presently and there are a lot of confused comedians. Because you are doing comedy and you see that, ah, Kenny Black don't sing. I will leave my own style of comedy and start doing what Kenny Black is doing. Oh, Apororo is shouting now.

Ah! I want to shout like Apororo. Oh! The Stalker plays music which is comedy. So when I'm cracking jokes now, I must go with DJ.

No. You can adapt, you can follow the trend, but not live what you are known to do. Do not live your wow factor. You are unique in your own unique way. That's it.

Vote for me for the next president of this country. Hope I've been able to inspire you. You are. president in i'll change the constitution first of all change that constitution yeah i think i'll i think the only thing our first of all do is change the constitution the remaining five i don't know the money five will come after but let me let's first of all change that constitution because i think it's dragging us back it makes it makes it look like we are living in the past okay i think there's one thing i would do i would chop i would stop child marriage i will stop child marriage a lot of people are independently Let me not mention, but I think I'll stop child marriage. It's really, really something that is disturbing me.
