Overview of Basic Nutrients
In this presentation, we discussed the six basic nutrients essential for maintaining health and their functions.
1. Water
- Dominates over 60% of the body.
- Essential for organ function, brain function, and toxin elimination.
- Aids in digestion and prevents constipation.
- Dehydration can lead to fatigue and reduced concentration.
2. Vitamins
- Keep away diseases and promote health.
- Approximately 13 essential vitamins; four key ones:
- Vitamin A
- Vitamin B6 - Lack can lower blood pressure uncontrollably.
- Vitamin C
- Vitamin D
- Adequate vitamin intake supports a healthy immune system and reduces cancer risks.
- Vitamins have antioxidant properties and contribute to longevity.
3. Protein
- Building block of the body (muscles, bones, skin, hormones, antibodies).
- Composes about 16% of human body weight.
- Made of different types of amino acids.
- Essential for proper body function and often emphasized in diets, even for weight loss.
4. Fats
- Often avoided, but necessary in moderation.
- Excessive fat can lead to health issues (high blood pressure, heart problems).
- Fats help absorb other nutrients and aid in cell building and muscle movement.
- Controlled fat intake can lower risks of heart disease and Type 2 diabetes and may improve brain function.
5. Minerals
- Key minerals include:
- Calcium: Supports strong bones, nerve signal transmission, and muscle function.
- Iron: Crucial for red blood cell creation and hormone production.
- Zinc: Boosts healing, metabolism, and immune system strength.
6. Carbohydrates
- Important energy source for the brain and central nervous system.
- Necessary for proper functioning while not overloading on carbs.
Conclusion
- Importance of a balanced intake of all six nutrients.
- Encouragement to evaluate daily water consumption and nutrient intake.
