Lecture on Interaction Design

Overview

  • Interaction design is a key component of user experience (UX) design.
  • It focuses on designing interactions between users and products, often in software like apps and websites.
  • Aims to help users achieve their objectives effectively.

Interaction Design vs. UX Design

  • Interaction Design: Involves creating the interaction between user and product.
  • UX Design: Broader, includes user research, personas, and testing to find relevant experiences for users.

5 Dimensions of Interaction Design

  1. Words
    • Words used in interactions should be simple and meaningful.
    • They communicate necessary information without overwhelming the user.
  2. Visual Representations
    • Includes graphical elements like images and icons.
    • Complements words to convey information.
  3. Physical Objects
    • Involves devices and physical spaces used for interaction, e.g., mouse, smartphone.
    • Context affects user-product interaction.
  4. Time
    • Includes animations, videos, and sounds that evolve over time.
    • Important for feedback and tracking interactions.
  5. Behavior
    • User's interaction and reaction to the product.
    • Dimensions combined to create a compelling experience.

Questions for Interaction Designers

  1. User's interaction methods: Mouse, finger, stylus.
    • Define possible interactions based on product type.
  2. Visual clues from appearance.
    • Use color, shape, size to indicate functionality.
  3. Error messages and user mitigation.
    • Messages should be understandable and solvable by the user.
  4. Feedback post-action.
    • Ensure timely system feedback.
  5. Size of interface elements.
    • Elements should be reasonable for interaction.
  6. Use of standard formats.
    • Use familiar elements for better learnability.

Role of Interaction Designers

  • Depends on company size and resources.
  • Larger companies: Separate roles like UX researcher, information architect, etc.
  • Smaller teams: Combined roles into one or two people.

Tasks Handled by Interaction Designers

  1. Design Strategy
    • Focus on user goals and necessary interactions.
    • May include conducting user research.
  2. Wireframes and Prototyping
    • Create layout of interactions in wireframes.
    • Produce interactive or high-fidelity prototypes.
